GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
We have missed our eighth graders this week while they are off exploring Boston on their annual trip, and we look forward to welcoming them back on Thursday and hearing about their adventures and experiences. We are entering a very busy time at TGS with many exciting events on the horizon. I urge you to keep an eye on our calendar so that things don't sneak up on you. I'll highlight a few future events in this note, as well.
This Saturday at 10:00am the Bill Koch League is having a trail work day at TGS. I hope that any TGS parents and students who are interested in helping will be able to show up and lend a hand. We are widening and grading sections of our ski trails to accommodate skiing in low snow conditions and to make sure that we can groom in all conditions. Our trails are an incredible resource for our students and we hope to extend that resource to the local ski community, as well. I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday for a fun and rewarding day of work.
Next Thursday is Foreign Language Night. Madame Jo and Liz Jackson have coordinated an excellent evening that will be informative and fun as we celebrate our robust foreign language offerings at TGS. I hear the student-made films are amazing and am looking forward to seeing them with all of you.
Early next week you can expect to receive an electronic survey related to our Master Plan process. I hope you will take the time to fill this out, as we value your input. Once the survey is completed and reviewed, we will schedule a community meeting at TGS where Breadloaf Construction will be available to present about their initial findings, gather additional input and feedback, and explain the next steps in the process.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE NIGHT NOVEMBER 20
Looking for a new cooking idea? Tired of pizza and hamburgers? We have some new cuisine ideas for you to try out on your family! This year, students of Spanish and French will teach you how to make some delicious dishes from distant shores! Foreign Language Evening is back and on Thursday, November 20, you can learn how to make Paella and Croque Monsieur!
Students in grades 5-8 will show you their cooking movies and serve small treats from France and Spain. Performance time is 6:30-8:00 in the theatre space. Please bring students 15 minutes early, at 6:15, to the Lower School. Please be sure children have eaten before the event.
Your child is welcome to bring a friend to this event.
TRAIL DAY AND BKL UPDATES
The ski trail project is under way! There will be a Putney Ski Club Work Day at The Grammar School this Saturday, November 15 from 10-1. We'll be clearing brush, overhanging branches, and small trees from the trails before the big machines come in. So put on warm clothes, grab your loppers, and come out to lend a hand in building this amazing community resource! Lunch to follow.
We're also having a Bill Koch League information night at the Putney Library next Thursday, November 20 from 4:30-6. Stop by to find out more about the youth skiing program or sign up! Email jenrobb@gmail.com with questions.
SKI/SKATE SALES
We will hold the annual Ski/Skate Sale at TGS December 12. We are looking for current model skis, skates, boots, and clean apparel. Please contact Mary if you have items to donate. We suggest a donation to TGS of at least 20% of the sale price, and you keep the rest. Please use these next few weeks to go through your winter equipment (clothing too) and decide what you can recycle.
The 29th Annual SMS Ski and Snowboard Super Sale is scheduled for Friday and Saturday November 28- 29. Hosted in the SMS gymnasium, the Ski and Snowboard Super Sale is SMS's second largest fundraising event and all proceeds go toward bettering the experience of SMS student athletes.
WINTER SKI PROGRAM TGS Tuesday ski days at Grafton Ponds and Okemo begin January 6. We will send a letter to all parents with more information, and forms for both programs will be available on the website soon.
NEIL TAYLOR VISITS TGS
Neil Taylor, the famous Blind Masseur from Brattleboro, Vermont, came to talk to the 7th and 8th graders last week. Neil spoke about the experience of losing his sight when he was a 28 year old teacher at Greenwood School. In three days, Neil went from being a physically active, classroom teacher, dorm head and coach, who loved to alpine ski, mountain bike and drive, to a blind man who needed to find a new life for himself. Neil spoke openly and honestly about discovering massage and how he realized it was something he was passionate about and he could do. He went to school and became certified. He told the students about living alone, learning how to shop and cook, and, just recently, deciding to apply for a seeing-eye dog. Neil is a humorous and positive man, who told the classes he was surprised that he could tell them, five years after his loss of sight, that he was happy. Neil has a girlfriend, with whom he regularly rock climbs. Neil gave us the gift of perspective and joy. Thank you, Neil. Laurie
