THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL WEDNESDAY NOTICE

   May 7, 2014

GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
I want to congratulate all of the members of the seventh and eighth grades on the successful execution of this year's musical Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr. I enjoyed every dress rehearsal and show, and I am so impressed by what our students accomplished as a team on stage. I am in awe of these students for their stellar performances. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this show a reality, and to Alli and the many faculty and staff who helped, as well. It was wonderful to see so many alumni, past parents, community members, and friends of TGS come to the musical. Their attendance and enthusiasm speak to the power of this tradition and the lasting bonds and memories it creates. I look forward to seeing the DVD, filmed by TGS parent Pedr Seymour.

Currently the eighth grade is in Nantucket on their annual spring trip, and the seventh grade is in Quebec City. We look forward to full reports on those trips after they return, and to hearing about the many trips our students will take this spring, as we continue our tradition of moving beyond our walls to explore the myriad learning opportunities afforded by travel!

Next week we look forward to our TGS golf outing on Thursday at the Brattleboro Country Club. We have room for more golfers and still have a few Tee Sponsor opportunities available. For those who are not interested in golf, but wish to attend the dinner, please contact Suzanne Rubinstein for details. We are expecting a large crowd for Grandparents Day on Friday, so please RSVP so that we can plan to accommodate your group.

I look forward to seeing many of you on campus in the next week.

Sincerely,
Dan

Dan Marchetti

Head of School

ECUADOR CELEBRATION MAY 21

El Mercado de Otavalo: On Wednesday, May 21, a festive, schoolwide celebration will take place as the culminating event to our study of Ecuador. Beginning at 11:00am with an all-school meeting, the 8th graders will present a video from their service-learning trip to Ecuador. This will be followed by a fashion show, with 8th graders sporting some of the clothing of Ecuador. The meeting will conclude with the 8th graders performing a skit on how to buy things at the Mercado or Market de Otavalo.

At 12:00 we will all gather in the back driveway area, where colorful booths will be set up to sell hand-made artisan goods from Ecuador. The funds from the market place sales will go to a project that the 8th graders undertook in Ecuador, helping to provide a sustainable bathroom.

Following the market place, we will all gather for lunch, to which each class will contribute an Ecuadorean dish, prepared with their classroom teacher. The cost for the lunch, also part of the fundraiser, is $5 per person. Students should also come that day with a small amount of spending money for the market, anywhere from $5 - $15. This will be a wonderful way for us to cap our study of Ecuador and make a donation to a worthy project.

Parents are welcome to join us for any and all events. Please RSVP to Tammy if you plan to attend so that we can be sure to have enough food. Please note: We will not be using any paper or plastic products that cannot be washed and reused. If you plan to attend, please bring a plate, cup and fork. Any questions, please contact Liz Jackson, Libby McCawley or Eve McDermott. Gracias.

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF

During the month of May, Hop's seventh graders will be collecting non-perishable foods and toiletries (soap, toothpaste, packets of diapers, etc.) for the Putney Food Shelf. Putney Family Services values TGS's consistent support of the Foodshelf. We encourage you to give in "6"s (six boxes of mac 'n' cheese, six cans of corn, six of whatever!) that would help support PFS's Family Food Bag program. Baskets will be located in the Upper School and outside the main office. Donations can also be brought in to your child's homeroom teacher. Let's make a difference in the lives of others this month! Thank you!
