THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL WEDNESDAY NOTICE

   April16, 2014

GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Thank you to the many parents who came to our rescheduled April Head of School Coffee in the Library. We began this initiative in hopes of providing a regular opportunity to share updates from TGS and to offer an opportunity to hear from you, our parents, about your TGS experience. There have been many wonderful conversations and I have appreciated all that I've learned from each of you about TGS. I look forward to next month's Coffee and to continuing this tradition next year, as well.

Last Thursday my friend, David Anderson, came to TGS to present his slides about mountaineering and exploring in China to the entire school. It was a captivating presentation and both students and faculty enjoyed Dave's slides, and his message. One of the things I've always appreciated about Dave is that he is a world-class mountaineer and climber who is ultimately a teacher at heart, and is extremely humble. Dave manages to talk about his incredible adventures in a context that is engaging for students, and also makes those adventures and feats seem attainable for anyone. While I am continually impressed by our students in so many areas, last week during the presentation I was amazed at the questions they asked Dave. From preschoolers to eighth graders, they peppered him with intelligent and poignant questions, and would have continued on if we did not have to cut things short in order to keep the bus on time! Dave thoroughly enjoyed his time at TGS and I look forward to bringing him back after his next adventure!

Finally, as many of you by now are aware, last Thursday George Shumlin passed away. George and Kitty Shumlin, along with Dick and Dottie Richardson, founded TGS almost 54 years ago. Through their vision, energy, and talents, The Grammar School grew to be the wonderful, vibrant institution it is today. TGS is forever grateful for all that George did, and our thoughts are with all of the Shumlin family.

Sincerely,
Dan

The last day to record time on the contract is April 21.  We hope you are enjoying this period focusing on reading.  Remember, one of the best ways you can support your children's reading is for you to model how important reading is in your life, talk with your children about books you enjoyed as a child, ask your children about what they are reading, read with them and let them see you reading. Return all successfully completed contracts on Wednesday, April 22.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR SPANISH STUDENTS THIS SUMMER

Expand your family's horizons this summer by welcoming a student from Spain into your home through the STEP-to-U.S.A. program. The boys and girls, who range in age from 14 to 17, will arrive on

June 25 and spend 3 1/2 weeks in the U.S., departing on July 20.

The students are all from the Basque region of Spain and are at an intermediate English level.  Host families provide a warm and safe home environment for the student, as well as meals and transportation to a meeting spot on the days there are field trips ( Boston and Six Flags--host families are invited to come along). It's fine for a student to share a room with a host sibling, and the students have their own spending money, medical insurance and phone cards.

Interested families are encouraged to call Ann Newsmith at 802-257-4710 or email exchangeVT@gmail.com. Host families are also needed for exchange students who will be attending BUHS and other area schools.

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF SEEKS VOLUNTEERS! Are you looking for a meaningful way to give to your community?  Volunteering for the Putney Foodshelf  may be just the opportunity you've been looking for.  Come join us on Saturday, April 19th, have your curiosity satisfied and learn about the ways you might join our dynamic group of volunteers.

We are committed to helping our neighbors, whose budgets are stretched too far to feed themselves and their families.  Simply stated, we provide healthy, supplemental food to those in need.  But that is only a part of what we do...

Since the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fund cuts in November, we have seen a marked increase in the number of individuals and families needing our support.  And, with increasing numbers comes the need for more volunteers. While more than 90% of our clientele live and work right here in Putney, we serve people from nearby towns who feel the stigma of walking into their hometown food shelves. We understand their reserve and seek only to make sure that our "food insecure" neighbors have the ability to feed themselves. In addition to providing food, we work with Putney Family Services and SEVCA to help them apply for other federal, state and local assistance programs that can make the difference in making ends meet in a struggling economy.

There are many ways that volunteers help the Putney Foodshelf.  The following is a partial list of areas where volunteers are needed.

* Open Foodshelf Hours:  9-10 AM Saturdays, 6-7PM Tuesdays

* Food pick up from the VT Foodbank in Brattleboro and other locations.

* Stocking shelves at the Putney Foodshelf, located at the Putney Community Center.

* Bookkeeping assistance.

* Grant writing.

* Family Food Bag - preparing bags of nutritious meals and snacks for Putney Central School students to take home for the weekend.

* Fundraising- We are always looking for creative and energetic individuals who like to plan, organize and coordinate fundraisers.

We are a small, fun and friendly group of volunteers who invite you to join us for a few hours to show you our facility, explain in depth our goals and help you envision your place in our organization.

Please join us on April 19th, from 3-5 PM, at the Putney Community Center, located at 10 Christian Square, Putney, VT.  RSVP to Lani, Volunteer Coordinator, at PutneyFoodshelf@gmail.com
