THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL WEDNESDAY NOTICE

   April 9, 2014

GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
I hope to see many of you at TGS on Thursday for a special presentation by guest speaker Dave Anderson. Dave is an old friend of mine who is an outdoor adventurer, expedition and first ascent specialist, and world traveler. He also happens to be a wonderful photographer and speaker, and will show our students his most recent slideshow, Chasing Ghosts and Dreams on the Tibetan Plateau. Dave and I used to work together at NOLS and have kept in touch over the years. I'm so pleased he will be able to share his passion with our students on Thursday.

With the snow melt and arrival of mud season, comes the perennial issue of ticks. While there is no easy solution to avoiding ticks in our region, we've taken the winter to put in place a few measures to attempt to mitigate their presence on our campus, and elevate student awareness at the same time. Ultimately, the best protocol that we encourage is that parents remind their children to do a thorough check for ticks each day when they get home.

All teachers will remind students to check themselves for ticks after going into the woods, and we will reinforce this at an upcoming All School Meeting, as well.

We also are going to apply a non-toxic garlic spray around the woods line perimeter of the playgrounds. This non-toxic tick deterrent is applied monthly and may help deter ticks from traveling into areas where our children spend lots of time. We are also planning to bring guinea hens to campus to roam and do their part to minimize any ticks.

As new methods of tick control become available, we will continue to evaluate them and make decisions that best fit our mission and needs, while doing everything we can to keep students tick free without limiting their outdoor experiences.

Lastly, we have rescheduled the Head of School Coffee to next Tuesday, April 14 at 8:30 in the Library. I hope you can make it!

THIRD GRADE POEMS

A Bee's Soul

By Aiden Fletcher, 3rd

Spring is a bee's soul popping through

The snow

Turning the gray sky into a yellow sunshine

A bee turning snow into green grass where

the mice go

And where buttercups pop their beauty

What is Spring?

By Annie Siegel, 3rd

Spring

A pretty sight

and a great day

warm sunny days

fun fun fun

the best season of all!!!

winter, spring,

summer, fall

but I have to say spring's

the best one of all.

It flitters, it flies up up in the skies

with summer peeking through the crack

Flowers galore

Like daisies and roses and even more

It flitters, it flies up up in the skies

What is it like for you?

Is it big? Is it small?

Is it nothing

at all?

Is it blue?  Is it green?

For me spring is spring, which no

matter what , we all love.

COMMUNITY NEWS

FROM LAURA MALINOSKI - MONTREAL FAMILY HOST OPPORTUNITY!

Last Spring Bryn hosted two students from Montreal's Stanislaus  School. Marie-Kahlia's family is looking to stay for a week on a farm in Vermont May. If you know anyone whom might be interested in this wonderful bilingual, multicultural opportunity, please email Laura67forest@gmail.com or call 603-756-3909.

Hello Laura,

I am Hassia, Marie-Kalia's mother. She is your daughter's pen friend who stayed with your family last year. The reason I am writing today is because my children (Marie-Kalia 12 and Zack 9) would like to visit a farm in the Vermont this coming spring. We would like to schedule our trip for Saturday May 17th to Monday the 19th, since we will have a long weekend then. I would like to ask you if you know any addresses of people who do this type of activities or families with children my kids' ages who might be interested in housing us?? I will certainly pay them for that.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Hassia

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF SEEKS VOLUNTEERS! Are you looking for a meaningful way to give to your community?  Volunteering for the Putney Foodshelf  may be just the opportunity you've been looking for.  Come join us on Saturday, April 19th, have your curiosity satisfied and learn about the ways you might join our dynamic group of volunteers.

We are committed to helping our neighbors, whose budgets are stretched too far to feed themselves and their families.  Simply stated, we provide healthy, supplemental food to those in need.  But that is only a part of what we do...

Since the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fund cuts in November, we have seen a marked increase in the number of individuals and families needing our support.  And, with increasing numbers comes the need for more volunteers. While more than 90% of our clientele live and work right here in Putney, we serve people from nearby towns who feel the stigma of walking into their hometown food shelves. We understand their reserve and seek only to make sure that our "food insecure" neighbors have the ability to feed themselves. In addition to providing food, we work with Putney Family Services and SEVCA to help them apply for other federal, state and local assistance programs that can make the difference in making ends meet in a struggling economy.

There are many ways that volunteers help the Putney Foodshelf.  The following is a partial list of areas where volunteers are needed.

* Open Foodshelf Hours:  9-10 AM Saturdays, 6-7PM Tuesdays

* Food pick up from the VT Foodbank in Brattleboro and other locations.

* Stocking shelves at the Putney Foodshelf, located at the Putney Community Center.

* Bookkeeping assistance.

* Grant writing.

* Family Food Bag - preparing bags of nutritious meals and snacks for Putney Central School students to take home for the weekend.

* Fundraising- We are always looking for creative and energetic individuals who like to plan, organize and coordinate fundraisers.

We are a small, fun and friendly group of volunteers who invite you to join us for a few hours to show you our facility, explain in depth our goals and help you envision your place in our organization.

Please join us on April 19th, from 3-5 PM, at the Putney Community Center, located at 10 Christian Square, Putney, VT.  RSVP to Lani, Volunteer Coordinator, at PutneyFoodshelf@gmail.com
