THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL WEDNESDAY NOTICE

   April 2, 2014

GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear TGS Parents and Families,

What a lively day on campus! For those unable to attend our All School Meeting, it was a treat to see so many students dressed as their favorite literary characters, as we kicked off our annual TGS reading challenge. We all owe Ponnie a big thank you for organizing such a fun day, and for such a noble cause. I hope many of you will read along with your children this month and support them in this endeavor.

While I am particularly fond of winter, it has been a treat to anticipate this spring and all of the fun events and activities that will unfold at TGS. Spring Sports begin April 28, and as many of you know, Girls On The Run has already begun. Before you know it, the much anticipated Musical will be here as well. Exciting times!

We have been very busy on campus as a faculty, as we vet candidates to fill our open positions. As was expected, there has been a tremendous amount of interest from wonderful candidates who wish to work here at TGS. We've had a few people visit TGS recently, and we are in the final stages of some of our searches. We will continue to share updates on this exciting process as things unfold.

Thank you to all of you who have already returned your renrollment information for next year. If you have not done so yet, please contact Phil to reserve your spot for next year.

OPUS 28 WINNERS!

The fifth grade recently entered 7 compositions into the Opus 28 competition run by Music-COMP (formerly Vermont Midi Project). Congratulations to Wells Mundell-Wood and Amelia Opsahl, whose piece The Four Seasons was selected to be performed by professional musicians at the Opus 28 Concert on April 30, 2014 at 6:30 pm in Ludlow, VT.

READ EVERY DAY CHALLENGE BEGINS TODAY

The Read Every Day reading challenge begins today and runs through Tuesday,  April 21. Students in K-8 should have received their reading challenge packets, which includes a letter to parents, calendar, student contract, adult contract, and a Read Every Day bookmark.  Please read the information carefully.

This is a noncompetitive reading challenge - readers challenge themselves. For some, reading daily will be their challenge, while for others, their challenge will be to read longer each day. In order to successfully complete the challenge, participants must read and record their contracted number of minutes every day during the three week period.  Join the fun by making this a family affair. Parents are encouraged to participate.

To kick off the challenge, students, faculty, and staff came to school dressed as a favorite book character today, and ended the day with a special buddy activity. The challenge will end with the annual Popsicle Party, attended by classes with 100% successful participation in the challenge.

For most students, parental support creating a contract and recording the minutes is crucial. So, if you have any questions or need more materials, please call or email me.

Happy Reading,  Ponnie

COMMUNITY NEWS

PUTNEY FOODSHELF SEEKS VOLUNTEERS!

Are you looking for a meaningful way to give to your community?  Volunteering for the Putney Foodshelf  may be just the opportunity you've been looking for.  Come join us on Saturday, April 19th, have your curiosity satisfied and learn about the ways you might join our dynamic group of volunteers.

We are committed to helping our neighbors, whose budgets are stretched too far to feed themselves and their families.  Simply stated, we provide healthy, supplemental food to those in need.  But that is only a part of what we do...

Since the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fund cuts in November, we have seen a marked increase in the number of individuals and families needing our support.  And, with increasing numbers comes the need for more volunteers. While more than 90% of our clientele live and work right here in Putney, we serve people from nearby towns who feel the stigma of walking into their hometown food shelves. We understand their reserve and seek only to make sure that our "food insecure" neighbors have the ability to feed themselves. In addition to providing food, we work with Putney Family Services and SEVCA to help them apply for other federal, state and local assistance programs that can make the difference in making ends meet in a struggling economy.

There are many ways that volunteers help the Putney Foodshelf.  The following is a partial list of areas where volunteers are needed.

* Open Foodshelf Hours:  9-10 AM Saturdays, 6-7PM Tuesdays

* Food pick up from the VT Foodbank in Brattleboro and other locations.

* Stocking shelves at the Putney Foodshelf, located at the Putney Community Center.

* Bookkeeping assistance.

* Grant writing.

* Family Food Bag - preparing bags of nutritious meals and snacks for Putney Central School students to take home for the weekend.

* Fundraising- We are always looking for creative and energetic individuals who like to plan, organize and coordinate fundraisers.

We are a small, fun and friendly group of volunteers who invite you to join us for a few hours to show you our facility, explain in depth our goals and help you envision your place in our organization.

Please join us on April 19th, from 3-5 PM, at the Putney Community Center, located at 10 Christian Square, Putney, VT.  RSVP to Lani, Volunteer Coordinator, at PutneyFoodshelf@gmail.com
