GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
TGS is as busy as ever today. We are hosting a number of prospective families today for our first Open House of the season, and students in grades 7 and 8 are putting the finishing touches on their acts before the Studio Concert tonight. I look forward to seeing many of you this evening as we celebrate these students' performances and talents.
We are also happy that our lower fields have retained enough snow to host a Bill Koch League race on Sunday. TGS has hosted BKL races for many generations, and these fun races are great opportunities to celebrate skiing with our children. We will be there with Lila in the Lollipop race and hope others will come out for a great day of skiing, as well.
Speaking of great skiing, yesterday was a wonderful day at both Okemo and Grafton Ponds for our Ski Programs. Students learned that good skiing can be found in all sorts of conditions, even complete with a little rain. In fact, the snow set up like a great spring day, which is a welcome treat for a January day in New England. With this weather pattern, who knows what next Tuesday will bring? The only constant I can predict is that TGS students will ski on what we've got and have a great time doing it, as we celebrate winter in its varied forms.
Sincerely, Dan
Dan Marchetti
Head of School
SPORTS - BKL race at TGS at 10am on Sunday! TGS will host a Bill Koch League XC ski race on Sunday, January 19 at 10am. The race is open to all skiers, with classes for first-second, third-fourth, fifth-sixth, and seventh-eighth graders. There is a $5:00 registration fee for every skier, but NENSA membership is not required for this event. Registration will open at 9am at the school. For children five years and younger, there will be an untimed Lollipop course, where finishers receive a lollipop at the finish line. Head of School Dan Marchetti says, "TGS has hosted BKL races for many years and we are excited to welcome skiers on Sunday. Our lower fields offer an excellent stadium venue for viewing the whole race. We are looking forward to a spirited day of friendly competition. " XC skiing has been an integral part of the school since its founding in 1960. Five Olympians got their start in XC ski racing at The Grammar School, and the school's extensive trail system provides opportunities for all students to learn to ski and improve their skills. For more information and updates, check the the Putney Bill Koch Ski League Facebook page.Contact Jennifer Robb at jenrobb@gmail.com with questions. BKL practice today at TGS. There still is snow in the Lower Field!

Local Americana band Joinery will be playing at Next Stage, 15 Kimball Hill in Putney at 7 pm on Sunday, January 19, 2014 to raise money for local cancer survivor Kirsten Jeppesen. A $10.00 donation is suggested at the door and all proceeds will help defray Kirsten's expenses as a result of her cancer treatments, with a portion going to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Cancer Support Group to continue their good work with cancer patients in our community.
Colin Blazej, bass player for Joinery, first met Kirsten Jeppesen around 1991 when they worked together for a local environmental consulting firm. They remained friends over the years and when he heard this fall of her ovarian cancer surgery and treatments he wanted to help. "I knew West Hill Shop had helped raise funds for Kirsten's expenses as she is an avid biker and cross country skier. I thought if there was a way to get all the people that Kirsten and I knew together it could have a greater impact than just my donation and music seemed like a great way to make it happen. Billy Straus and Maria Basescu of Next Stage Arts Project were instrumental in making the concert happen by graciously donating the use of the wonderful Kimball Hill Next Stage venue."
Joinery will be releasing their first album in January, 2014 and will have just played their first gig in New York City on January 5. Joinery features John Pozzi on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Chuck Davison on lead guitar and mandolin, Andy Foster on lap steel guitar and Colin Blazej on stand up bass and backing vocals.
Next Stage Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing Putney's cultural and economic village center through the programming, development and operation of Next Stage. Next Stage presents a wide range of events including music, theater, spoken word and film.
For more information contact: Maria Basescu, Executive Director, 387-0102 or nextstagearts@gmail.com. You can follow Joinery at www.facebook.com/joinerymusic.
Snowshoe Animal Tracking Hike in Dummerston on Saturday, February 8-
Lynn Levine will present "Snow Secrets: Exploring Mammal Tracks" on Saturday, February 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This workshop is offered by The Nature Museum at Grafton and will take place in Dummerston. The easy to moderate animal tracking hike will likely require snowshoes, depending on weather conditions. It is open to adults and to children age 10 and up. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)
Registrants will meet in Dummerston and will carpool to nearby Nature Conservancy land, where there are relic red cedar trees. The group will tramp into the winter woods with Levine, who will demonstrate how to identify signs of wildlife. The group will reconvene at Levine's home after the hike for a presentation and a question and answer session. Levine is a noted tracking expert and a licensed forester. She is the co-author of Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life-Size Tracking Guide and the author of Snow Secrets. She holds a master's degree in forestry from the University of Massachusetts. The snow date for this event is Sunday, February 9. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. Early-bird registration (by Wednesday, January 29) costs $20 per person. After January 29, if any spaces remain available, registration will be $25. There will be no registration on the day of the event. To pre-register, visit http://www.nature-museum.org/Register-for-Tracking-Hike.html or call (802) 843-2111.
2014 SUMMER CAMP IN SPAIN - Culture and Language Immersion Program June 28 - July 12, 2014 (15 days) Led by Liz Jackson with Gogi Abroad - Ages 13-16
Immerse yourself in Spanish language and culture this summer in Cadiz, Spain, the oldest city in Europe. Explore the cobblestone streets, friendly faces, and vibrant culture that Cadiz has to offer. In the afternoons, experience beautiful beaches and historical sites of the city and the region! Each afternoon will be filled with fun activities for teens (such as instruction in surfing, sea kayaking, Spanish cooking, sunset boat excursions, and tons of time exploring the many unspoiled beaches). We will travel to typical white Andalucían villages and soak up all the sites and different foods of the region. You will grow your Spanish skills through real world interactions as you speak with locals, your host family, and new friends. At K2 Internacional School you will not just be another student. You will receive personal attention due to the small class sizes (around 10 per class) with friendly teachers who create interesting, interactive classes. You will enjoy three hours of classroom Spanish and have the opportunity to utilize phrases and idioms in real life situations and expand your knowledge in a comfortable setting. After class is the time you can really apply your Spanish. The classroom provides you with more confidence to go out into the world and use what you know!
