THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL WEDNESDAY NOTICE

   January 8, 2014

Happy New Year!

GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

It is wonderful to be back at TGS with your children after a long and restful vacation. We have had an unusual start to this week, with a snow day and the "Polar Vortex" to contend with, but we are settling into the school routine well and both students and faculty are ready to be back and focus on having an excellent 2014! I hope you will all join me in welcoming our newest student, Skye Morehouse, to TGS! Skye joined our 4th grade on Tuesday and we are very excited to have him and and his family with us.

Strategic Plan

I am pleased to report that during our Board of Trustees meeting last night, the Board voted to adopt the new TGS Strategic Plan! I want to thank everyone who had a hand in the process of shaping this important document that will help us chart the future of TGS. I am especially grateful to the Strategic Planning Committee for their countless hours of work, and to the leadership of Julie Burns and Peter Eden, who chaired the committee. I look forward to sharing updates regularly on the implementation of STP initiatives with the community as we move forward.

Ski Program

Yesterday I was very fortunate to be able to join the TGS nordic skiers at Grafton Ponds for a blustery tour. What a day! I was so impressed with our students and how well they handled the cold weather, and did so with smiles. I am looking forward to joining the Okemo group in the future and am told that they had a wonderful time as well. I was particularly impressed and touched by how much care and attention our older students paid to our younger ones. I saw many students helping each other in myriad ways and was reminded of the power that group experiences such as this can have for students. I can't wait for next week!

Welcome back!

Dan

UPCOMING FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES!

As deadlines for submission of the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) and supporting documents draw ever closer, I want to emphasize The Grammar School's ever-increasing desire to be more sustainable. Families applying for financial aid are encouraged to complete the process online. Paper copies of the PFS are available, but keep in mind that it is more expensive for families to submit a paper version and it takes School and Student Service much longer to process.

Reminders:

  • The deadline for submission of the PFS is Friday, February 3, 2014.
  • The deadline for submission all supporting documents is Friday, February 28, 2014.
  • Supporting documentation includes:

    • Forms 1065, 1120-S and K-1 Schedules (if applicable);

COMMUNITY NEWS

2014 SUMMER CAMP IN SPAIN - Culture and Language Immersion Program June 28 - July 12, 2014 (15 days) - Ages: 13-16

Led by Liz Jackson with Gogi Abroad

Immerse yourself in Spanish language and culture this summer in Cadiz, Spain, the oldest city in Europe. Explore the cobblestone streets, friendly faces, and vibrant culture that Cadiz has to offer. In the afternoons, experience beautiful beaches and historical sites of the city and the region! Each afternoon will be filled with fun activities for teens (such as instruction in surfing, sea kayaking, Spanish cooking, sunset boat excursions, and tons of time exploring the many unspoiled beaches). We will travel to typical white Andalucían villages and soak up all the sites and different foods of the region. You will grow your Spanish skills through real world interactions as you speak with locals, your host family, and new friends. At K2 Internacional School you will not just be another student. You will receive personal attention due to the small class sizes (around 10 per class) with friendly teachers who create interesting, interactive classes. You will enjoy three hours of classroom Spanish and have the opportunity to utilize phrases and idioms in real life situations and expand your knowledge in a comfortable setting. After class is the time you can really apply your Spanish. The classroom provides you with more confidence to go out into the world and use what you know!

Sinceramente,

Liz Jackson
