GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
As I write this, I am watching throngs of students sledding and playing outside, and I am listening to their joyous refrains as they celebrate the start of winter. I've been looking forward to seeing TGS covered in snow all year and am particularly excited about the prospect of a significant snowfall on Saturday, in hopes of finally being able to ski on our wonderful trail system. Here's hoping we have a robust winter full of skiing and time outdoors as a community.
It was wonderful to see many of you last night for our first of two Winter Concerts. The students performed admirably, with courage and poise, and everyone had an excellent time. I am looking forward to next week and seeing what our older students have in store for us. We are fortunate to have a talented music team at TGS and I am grateful for their leadership and exemplary work with our students.
On Thursday at 5:00 we will host a final review of the emerging Strategic Plan in the auditorium at TGS. We will project the plan on a large screen and go through the objectives and action points to collect community feedback. I am looking forward to seeing many of you there and am continually grateful for any and all input as we look to craft the best plan for TGS possible.
As a reminder, we have changed the snow day notification system this year. Please see this memo on my blog if you have questions.
Lastly, we have all felt the passing of legendary leader and humanitarian Nelson Mandela this past week, and teachers have addressed this in ways that are meaningful to them with their students. Kathy Richardson has done an excellent job of building in a curriculum unit on Mandela and South Africa, with the help of her daughter Beth, who is both a TGS alumna and has spent a great deal of time in South Africa. I want to thank Kathy for this initiative and I look forward to her students sharing their lessons with our community at an upcoming All School Meeting.
Sincerely,
Dan J. Marchetti Head of School

BKL December Schedule
TGS SECRET SANTA 2013 Holiday Fun! The eighth grade is organizing the annual TGS Secret Santa draw, in conjunction with a food drive for The Putney Food Shelf. This is a school-wide activity that involves all faculty and staff, as well as students from K-8th grades. Each person draws the name of someone in the school: From December 13 until December 19 we write notes to the people for whom we are Secret Santas, giving hints as to who we are, and, perhaps, including a little surprise, if it is convenient. Remember not to tell anyone whom you have drawn, as it is secret! The week of December 16 everyone brings in a gift with a value under $6 for the person he or she drew, AND an item to donate to the Putney Food Shelf. On the last day of school,December 20, we have a Secret Santa assembly when gifts are distributed and the food we have collected is presented to Putney Family Services. If you have questions, please email Laurie. Thank you, Laurie
PLEASE SIGN UP AND BRING YOUR HOLIDAY TALENTS TO THE FACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
On Friday, Dec. 20, around 12:30pm right after the Secret Santa (which should not be missed!), there will be a special luncheon for the faculty & staff at TGS. The theme is ENCHANTED WINTER WOODLAND. Laura Zindel is in charge of the decorating, so it is sure to be amazing! The Luncheon is a long and wonderful holiday tradition to show our appreciation to the hard working faculty and staff! The set up, clean up, decorations, food, and drink will all be provided by parent volunteers. This is a great way to kick off the holiday of giving!
Signup sheets are on the bulletin board outside of Tammy's/Suzanne's offices and in the upper school cubby room. We are encouraging at least one parent for each grade level to sign up for cleanup, because those are the most difficult slots to fill (Dads are welcome and encouraged)! If you cannot make it to the signup sheets, (or have any questions), please email Natalie Thomson, natalieathomson@yahoo.com and I will put your name and dish/task on the sheet for you! Food should be dropped off at or before 12 noon on Dec. 20, lunch will start around 2:30pm, and clean up is from about 2-3pm. THANK YOU, in advance, for all of your help! Thanks, Natalie THE POWER OF DISCOVERY SESSION II REGISTRATION DEADLINES COMING UP SOON! Don't miss out on these amazing after school opportunities for your children in K-8th grade!

WAXING DEMO AT WEST HILL SHOP - Friday, Dec 13.Waxing tips straight from the cross-country national racing world to your own backyard. Drew Gelinas, veteran race ski service technician for the U.S. Ski Team on the World Cup circuit, will be demonstrating Nordic kick and glide waxing techniques.
Schedule of events:
- 5:30pm - basics kick waxing
- 6:15ish - glide waxing
- 7:00ish - Q&A for advanced waxing tips focusing on racing, fluoros, etc.
CALDWELL SPORT SKI DEMO - Caldwell Sport will hold a demo this Sunday at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center from noon-2pm. They will have hand selected race skis from Fischer, Madshus, and Salomon along with Madshus and Fischer skate boots. (These are all adult sized skis.)
It is a great opportunity for folks to try out World Cup racing gear on a great 1.5km loop. You don't have to be a World Cup ski racer to appreciate nice gear!
Please be in touch with Amy or Zach if you have any questions.
PRESCHOOL SKI SCHOOL COACH NEEDED - FROM ERIC AHO: A few years ago my wife Rachel is organized a "Pre-school Ski-school" for the toddler to age 4 group. "If they can walk they can ski" is the message we began putting out there.
Now our toddler is no longer a toddler and is skiing BKL. We are aware of several families with little kids. Many of the littlest kids have older siblings skiing in BKL. So...if you have any youngsters or know of any youngsters who would like to shoosh around please find a pair of strap on skis or 100 cm skis with snow monster bindings! and come to our Bill Koch Ski League Practices at 3:15pm on Wednesday.
Parents will need to be present to accompany their little kids. Our experience shows that while the little kids don't ski for too long, a short loop is often enough, everyone has a great time. Most importantly the experience lays a foundation of "fun on skis"!
Additionally, if anyone has strap-on skis they could share for use on these Wednesdays that would be especially helpful!
At present there is no one running this fun aspect of our program. If you would like to participate and help organize a group of like minded parents. Please let Eric know know and he can help set up an conversation thread.
