THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL WEDNESDAY NOTICE

   October 30, 2013

GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

It was wonderful to see snow falling over Hickory Ridge as I approached TGS this morning. I love all seasons, but a particularly snowy winter is always a great one, and hopefully today's flakes were a harbinger of things to come! I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend last Friday and enjoyed a well deserved break. Personally, we had a wonderful time with Charlie and many other TGS friends on a cold and enjoyable trip up Mt. Monadnock. We were well represented, with children from preschool on up, and many parent participants as well. We will be sure to offer this trip again, as well as other adventures that are open to all grades and families in the months to come.

Each week is exciting at TGS, and this week is no exception, with our Halloween celebrations in various classes, the start of our GET activities on Thursday, and the gear up to the Greenwood Tournament on Saturday for the 7/8 soccer team. Additionally, we will celebrate the Dia De Los Muertos on Friday, and will begin offering a few hot meals as Ecuador fundraisers on Fridays as well.

Lastly, I am very sad to write that Sheryl Fletcher, our beloved bus driver and parent of Liam and Aiden, is out on a medical leave. Sheryl has the full support of TGS and we are hopeful that she has a speedy recovery and will soon be back behind the wheel of the bus, driving our Walpole route. In the meantime, Chris Harlow will drive the Walpole route, with occasional assistance from Charlie Boswell. We are looking forward to Sheryl's return soon as possible!

Sincerely,
Dan

CELEBRATING THE CULTURE OF ECUADOR: Our school  community has begun our 2013-2014 Global Education Theme. In the lower grades, map work, website research, and the reading of folktales are just a few of the ways the children have been introduced to our whole school study of Ecuador. Two all school meetings have included a guest speaker and a DVD presentation. Hannah has integrated our GET theme into the older students' art classes. Seventh and eighth graders have studied street art in Quito as inspiration for their design of our lovely new mural outside the main building. Sixth graders learned about the symbolism portrayed in the Ecuadorian flag as they began their silk screening projects. This Thursday (October 31), grades kindergarten through sixth will begin a series of five weekly G.E.T. activities. Groups of mixed ages will travel to different classes to experience specific aspects of Ecuador's culture: dance, applique collage, traditional outside oven, clay ocarinas, and MORE! All school events and photos of our activities will be forthcoming.

Students in grades 5-8 will perform fairy tales from Europe and abroad, and serve you sweets from France and Spain. Save room for dessert! Performance time is 6:30-8:00 in the theatre space. Students, please arrive 15 minutes early, at 6:15, at the Lower School.

Curious about what goes on in French class? During the first two weeks of November, parents of children in grades K-4 have an invitation to visit! Come be a fly on the wall and see what we do each week. Each class will have something prepared to show parents, but this is primarily time to watch a typical class, and observe as we sing, play games, and use our French.

A special visiting schedule will be posted on the French blog, with days and times for each class. Please refer to the schedule to know which day your class is open.

UPDATE: The Power of Discovery - An After School STEM Program at TGS

We are excited to share an update on The Power of Discovery After School STEM Program at The Grammar School.

The Power of Discovery after school STEM program is underway at The Grammar School.  Junior FIRST Lego's Club met on Monday and the TGS Chess Club is kicking off today!

There are still a few openings for the Chess Club and the Math Olympiads Clubs for Session I and openings for all clubs for Session II!

Thanks to a generous grant in support of The Power of Discovery we are now able to offer scholarships so that any child who wants to participate in this years after school program will be able to do so. Contact Suzanne Rubinstein or David Hull for more information.

Click here for a comprehensive listing of clubs and links to registration forms.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION- It's Box Tops submission time! Please send your Box Tops coupons in with your child or put them in the box in the entrance way. We will be bundling up all the Box Tops on October 24 to get them in by the fall deadline. Once we send in all the Box Tops, our school will receive a check from General Mills in December. Each Box Top coupon is worth 10 cents -- free money for the school! If everyone participates, the money can really add up! This year we're planning to use the money for TGS Athletics.

If you have any questions about the Box Tops program, feel free to contact Clare Mundell, TGS Box Tops Coordinator, at [email protected].
