Responsibilities:  The mission of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University is to transform human healthcare and the environment by emulating the way nature builds. Developed as an alliance between Harvard and other premier academic and clinical partner institutions, Institute faculty and staff collaborate in high-risk, fundamental research and science-driven technology development. A major focus of the Institute is to translate the technologies developed by its faculty and staff into commercial products and therapies through collaborations with clinical investigators and establishment of corporate alliances.  For more information, visit http://wyss.harvard.edu.   
The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University seeks a talented, enthusiastic individual to contribute as science writer and editor of content for print and electronic media. Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications, the successful candidate will generate a wide range of materials, including internal and external newsletters, feature stories, press releases, content for Institute brochures and other collateral materials, and for the Institute public and internal websites. He/she will work collaboratively with the Institute Communications team, faculty and staff to integrate photos, illustrations, videos in ways that supplement the main article and enhance its message and to also respond to general inquiries from the public and other audience.
The successful candidate will report on the Institute's multi-disciplinary innovations, collaborative work and translational efforts to the general public as well as to faculty, administrators and staff at the Institute, at Harvard University and the Institute's collaborating institutions. This position demands an extremely high level of sophistication in reporting about science and technology, with a demonstrated ability to write with style, verve, precision and concision. In addition, the writer will contribute towards new ways of communicating the portfolio of Wyss Institute stories to an increasingly diverse audience.
Basic Qualifications:  PhD in an area relevant to the Institute's research areas (such as microfluidics, programmable nanomaterials, synthetic biology, medical devices, adaptive materials, and robotics). 3+ years' experience in Web or print communications, publications development, journalism or related areas.
Additional Qualifications:  Postdoctoral experience in a science or technology field preferred. Must demonstrate a talent for research and writing about science and technology, particularly in the areas of Institute focus such as microfluidics, programmable nanomaterials, synthetic biology, medical devices, adaptive materials and robotics. Also required are proven project-management, copy editing and proofreading skills.   Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; Strong interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with colleagues and senior leaders at the Wyss Institute and across Harvard University and Institute collaborating institutions; Excellent organizational skills; Attention to detail; A demonstrated ability to juggle multiple projects while working effectively under the pressure of last-minute deadlines and changing priorities; Demonstrated experience in working well both independently and as part of a team; and excellent judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential issues; Experience writing for the web; Publications management experience or a willingness to learn; Must be highly flexible, team-oriented and able to meet deadlines under pressure. This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are a prerequisite.
