Left over sheet music--Try this!

Here's an idea for any church that wants to clean out their old music but keep it! During an attic clean-out we found boxes of old sheet music that has sentimental value to many so we used it to "wallpaper" the wall of the music room. After first applying a wallpaper

liner we cut the sheets of music in 10" by 6" rectangles and offset each row coming up with a pattern. This wall contains memories that make you sing!

ORDER YOUR ECO-PALMS

Palm Sunday is March 24 this year. Why not celebrate the triumphal entry of Christ using palm fronds that are fairly traded? Through the Eco-Palm Project, palms bought from harvesters are purchased at a fair price and cut down in a way that protects the environment.

BISHOP OUGH LEADS THE CONNECTIONAL TABLE FORWARD TO "A NEW DAY"

(UMNS by Heather Hahn)

United Methodist Bishop Bruce Ough gives an overview of the work facing the denomination's Connectional Table during its meeting Jan. 15-17 at Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tenn. The Connectional Table coordinates the denomination's ministry, mission and resources. A UMNS photo by Mike DuBose.

NASHVILLE, TENNESEE --The new Connectional Table - a United Methodist governing body that had expected to be defunct by now - met to organize for the next four years.

The gathering Jan. 15-17 in Nashville, Tenn., set the tone for the denomination's leadership for the next four years and may have offered a prelude to proposals that will go before the next General Conference in 2016.

Dakotas-Minnesota Area Bishop Bruce R. Ough is the new Connectional Table chair. He noted that eight months after General Conference, many remain frustrated that too little in the church has changed.

"If nothing else, the General Conference exposed the intense level of distrust that exists within The United Methodist Church," he said. "But, friends, I am a person of faith and hope. I believe God has not given up on The United Methodist Church. I believe God can see and together we can discern other pathways to reformation and reordering and re-energizing the United Methodist movement."

AN EXPERIENCE OF THE FIRST-CENTURY CHURCH

(A Message from Bishop Bruce R. Ough, Dakotas-Minnesota Area)

Grace to you and peace from God our Creator and the Lord Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.

I am writing this at 36,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean on my return from my other Episcopal assignment as bishop of the United Methodist Missions in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. I bring heartfelt greetings to the United Methodists in the Dakotas-Minnesota Area from your sisters and brothers in each of these countries.

The Missions in Southeast Asia (including Cambodia) were initiated by the General Board of Global Ministries between 2001 and 2005. It is remarkable to witness what God is doing through the UMC throughout the region. The Holy Spirit is breaking through. Lives and entire villages are being transformed. Disciples of Jesus are being formed and equipped for ministry. Leaders are being trained. With limited resources and in spite of repression and persecution by the Communist governments in Vietnam and Laos, the distinct United Methodist witness of soul care (cultivating love of God) and social care (loving our neighbors) is taking deep root. There are now over 14,000 United Methodists in 260 congregations in Vietnam; 4,200 United Methodists in 70 congregations in Laos; 300 United Methodists in 6 congregations in Thailand. Nearly all the congregations are "small membership churches" and the vast majority are still house churches.

READY AND WAITING!
We're ready and waiting for you to register for our 2013 summer camps.  Brochures have been sent to the churches and to all former campers. In addition we have a new interactive camping website (www.dakcamps.org) that provides the ability to sort camps by age, date, and/or site.  You will find the welcome letter for each camp with all the information and forms you need located by each camp, just one click away.   We are so excited about our new website and believe it will be much more user friendly.   However, with any new site there are sometimes hiccups along the way so please let us know if something isn't working quite right or could be tweaked to be even better.  Your input is appreciated.

We are now using Trak1 to perform our background checks.  Volunteers that register online will be directed right to the Trak1 website to complete the disclosure form so there is no delay in getting the background check started.

Summer is just around the corner.  Invite your friends to join you at camp.  We'll see you there!

THE WAY:  2013 LENTEN VIDEO SERIES

The Dakotas Conference presents a weekly video series for Lent featuring Bishop Bruce R. Ough and members of the Dakotas Conference Cabinet. A 5 minute video will be available each week for churches and individuals to use throughout Lent. The videos will be based on Rev. Adam Hamilton's book The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus. Videos will be posted on the Dakotas Conference website , You Tube  and Vimeo.

Here is a description of The Way:

Travel with Adam Hamilton as he retraces the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Once again, Hamilton approaches his subject matter with thoughtfulness and wisdom, just as he did with Jesus' crucifixion in 24 Hours That Changed the World and with Jesus' birth in The Journey. Using historical information, archaeological data, and stories of the faith, Hamilton follows in the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his ministry, including the people he loved, the parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he brought.

SIGN UP FOR SIDEWALK SONDAY SCHOOL

It's time again to think about Sidewalk Sunday School (SWSS). The program is a fast paced Vacation Bible School experience for children of all ages.

There is no charge for SWSS and it is available to churches across the Dakotas. The SWSS team consists of two to three high-energy people that will guide your church shepherds through this 4-day program.  Churches are asked to sponsor the program by hosting in a local park and inviting children from throughout your community.

This is a great opportunity to have a children's outreach program in your area. If you think that you would like to host the SWSS program, notify Mike and Libby Flowers via email at Childharvest@msn.com. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call them at 701-799-1174.
