2012 THANKSGIVING APPEAL BRINGS $10,402.47
MITCHELL -- Churches from across the Dakotas Conference responded to Bishop Ough's 2012 Thanksgiving Appeal with $10,402.47. The money was divided between disaster response to Hurricane Isaac and selected Native American ministries in the Dakotas Conference. $5,201.22 has been sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) for needs related to Hurricane Isaac. The remaining $5,201.25 has been sent to the following Dakotas Native American programs: HOPE Center in Rapid City $1,733.75 The Sioux Falls Community of Shalom $1,733.75 The Four Winds Ministry in Fargo $1,733.75 |
DAKOTAS CONFERENCE LEADERS ATTEND QUADRENNIAL TRAINING
NASHVILLE, TENNESEE -- Fifteen leaders from the Dakotas Conference attended the 2013 Quadrennial Training event for conference leaders in Nashville, Tennessee.
The training, which takes place after each General Conference Session, offered key conference leaders and general agency staff the opportunity to learn and practice skills for adaptive leadership.
The leaders participated in plenaries about the identity, purpose, current reality, future hope and the adaptive questions facing The United Methodist Church.

SELBY UNITED METHODIST WOMEN "SEND HOPE"
SELBY -- United Methodist Women, Selby, SD, under the leadership of Marcie Zabel, heeded a call for diapers and dresses from the missionaries at Send Hope, a Methodist project in remote, poverty stricken eastern Honduras.
Out came the sewing machines and a request for sheets, pillowcases or any material that might work and 150 diapers and 20 dresses were sent along to Honduras via the UMC Dakotas Conference Volunteer in Mission (VIM) medical team.
Marcie Zabel and Selby UMC received a thank you from Gloria Borgman, UMC Dakotas Conference Volunteer in Mission medical team for all the time and energy the group put into creating the diapers and dresses and, "Even more, for your loving hearts that make a difference in the lives of God's children."

NEW BLOG FROM SPIRIT LAKE MINISTRY CENTER
SPIRIT LAKE -- Things on the Spirit Lake reservation are going very well. The food pantry is seeing about 600 people a month. The food pantry is giving enough food to clients to last about a week. In addition, visitors to the food pantry get to shop in the clothing closet.
Mike Flowers, Director at Spirit Lake Ministry reports, "I have started a new blog of daily prayers. It gives a daily suggestion on a prayer for the day with some commentary by me and a scripture reading.

REV. LEE GALE NAMED VICE-CHAIR OF NORTH DAKOTA VOAD
GRAFTON -- Rev. Lee Gale, Dakotas Conference Disaster Relief Coordinator of Disaster Relief, has been named Vice-Chair of the North Dakota Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD).
Rev. Gale's newly elected position will provide a good opportunity for the Dakotas Conference and United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to be more involved with the decision-making processes and implementation of recovery efforts preparing for and following a disaster.
Bishop Bruce R. Ough, Dakotas-Minnesota Area notes, "This is recognition of Rev. Gale's leadership and a wonderful opportunity to highlight the missional identity and commitment of the UMC.

SIGN UP FOR SIDEWALK SONDAY SCHOOL
It's time again to think about Sidewalk Sunday School (SWSS). The program is a fast paced Vacation Bible School experience for children of all ages.
There is no charge for SWSS and it is available to churches across the Dakotas. The SWSS team consists of two to three high-energy people that will guide your church shepherds through this 4-day program. Churches are asked to sponsor the program by hosting in a local park and inviting children from throughout your community.
This is a great opportunity to have a children's outreach program in your area. If you think that you would like to host the SWSS program, notify Mike and Libby Flowers via email at Childharvest@msn.com. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call them at 701-799-1174.

ON OUR WAY: CLERGY AND SPOUSE RETREAT
Bishop Bruce and Char Ough will be leading a Pre-Lenten Retreat for clergy and their spouses on February 4-6, 2013. This event will be held at the Best Western Ramkota Inn in Aberdeen, South Dakota. BREMER GRANTS AVAILABLE
Make a difference somewhere! Bremer Family Mission Grants are available from the Dakotas UM Foundation. Matching grants of $250 or $500 are to assist mission projects from local to global. Feb. 1, 2013 is the deadline and forms are on the Foundation website (www.DakotasUMF.org ), click the Grants button.

Congress Approves Two-Year Retroactive IRA Charitable Rollover Extension
You can again give your Required Minimum Distribution directly to a charity! H.R. 8 also includes a two-year retroactive extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover provision that lapsed on December 31, 2011. Specifically, the new law retroactively reinstates the Rollover for 2012 and allows any otherwise eligible gifts made after December 31, 2012 and before February 1, 2013 to be treated as a 2012 donation. The IRA Charitable Rollover has been reinstated for all of 2013 and will now expire at the end of this year, on December 31, 2013.
