Speaking of chickens: have you ever considered how many chickens there are in the world? Seriously. The other day, I was listening to some program on NPR and the discussion was wildlife. Not that chickens are necessarily "wild life," yet it did spark some thoughts into my head. And last Sunday, while we were gathering to begin our Bishop's Committee meeting, Mike Golden mentioned how much he likes chicken. So, again, the question came to my mind as to how many chickens may there be in the world. Think about it: virtually every restaurant in this country alone serves some sort of chicken; be it grilled, deep fried, shredded, cut-up into small kidney-shaped pieces, breaded and deep fried, chicken-kabobs, broiled and baked. You name it, chicken is served up and do we eat it up! Personally, I'm rather fond of a neat, grilled chicken sandwich, with lettuce, tomato, mustard and just a bit of mayo. Makes me hungry thinking about it.
Now, let us consider the immense abundance of grace the Holy Spirit provides, each day, to each person throughout the world. Please, I realize my comparison of the world's population of chickens and the third part of the Holy Trinity may well be a stretch and perhaps borders on the sacrilegious. However, it is just that - a comparison with no disrespect intended. You see, both are impossible to determine! THAT IS THE POINT, my friends.
Last weekend my sermon focused on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how blessed we are, as deserving recipients of the gifts of the Spirit. Jesus warned His followers that the Spirit's gifts could not be provided all at once, lest we "explode." Of course, Jesus didn't say it quite that way. He intimated that, to use the passage from St. John's Gospel: "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever." (John 14: 16). That Helper, I believe, is the Holy Spirit. We pray for guidance and assistance in our daily activities and endeavors. We ask God the Creator, Jesus the Redeemer and the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit to be with us, to guide and direct us in our travels, in our work and in our worship. Without fail, we are gifted with the very grace of which we beseech and implore. At St. Nicholas Church, we have much for which to be grateful. We are blessed in such great measure. I for one do not take it for granted. In my daily prayers, I am mindful to offer my humble thanks to the Almighty One for the gifts and grace found in each member of this community of faith, whom I love and cherish.
We may not always have our prayers answered in exactly the way we desire. God works in God's own way and time. We pray for patience. We pray for strength. We pray for guidance. God gives us what we need, not necessarily what we want or desire. I would wager to guess there are many people out there --good, sincere people at that -- who are "praying" they win the biggest Lotto ever. Sadly, most will not win a darn thing. Did God ignore our pleas? I just don't think God works like that. Yet, whoever wins this mega Lotto prize may very well utter these very words, "Thank you, God."
So let us thank God for all the gifts we receive: the Holy Spirit which works through God the Father and Jesus the Son that they continues to support and strengthen us. And why? Because we are loved beyond telling, beyond measure, beyond our ability to determine the depth, the height, the width of God's love for us. Which brings us back to the matter of chickens...just how many are there in the world...
Amen. -Manny

The Little Engine just didn't give up. It made it up the hill and now, just keeps on chugging along its blessed way. And so does our St. Nicholas Church: I wish to thank everyone who has graciously, willingly and generously pledged their spiritual, physical and financial support to our house of prayer. We all have committed ourselves to our church. Everyone shares as we can, how we can and when we can. Because of the continued assistance to our church, we are able to maintain our ministries, keep our doors wide open and welcome all God's people to a church that welcomes all. Thank you, my dear sisters and brothers. God bless, sustain and ever strengthen us, one and all. In the Redeemer, -Manny

We could use some bread for our worship
|
In advance, THANK YOU to those who are baking bread for our use at the weekend services. That being said, having an abundance of bread is good: as it keeps well in the freezer and we could certainly use an abundant supply just about now. Interested? Please let Manny know.

St. Nicholas T-Shirts Have Arrived |
The "Follow Me To St. Nicholas Episcopal Church" T-shirts have, at long last, arrived. If you placed an order, please stop by after the weekend services and pick up your shirt. The cost is $12.00 per shirt. Exact change would be most appreciated. Thanks to all who ordered. And, I do believe we ordered some extra ones, too. So, there's still a chance to get one before they're all gone.

The Community of St. Nicholas is praying
|
For the repose of the soul of Nancy Louise Reid, mother of our Sandra Glos and mother-in-law to Ron Glos. Let us pray for those who mourn and grieve as we pray for Nancy who now resides in the Perpetual Light of Paradise. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
For Bernie, one of our Eunice Dohra's sons who is in out of hospital and back home. His condition is still quite serious and he will require additional surgery in ten weeks time. Pray for his safety and a return to good health and sustained strength.
For the Rev. Marion Phipps, rector of St. Hugh of Lincoln in Elgin and a friend of St. Nicholas Church who fell and broke her leg in three places. The break was rather serious and she is now to take time away from her ministry to heal and recover. Pray for Marion's swift recovery and she find comfort and strength during her recuperation.
For a lasting and enduring peaceful resolution to the violence that has gripped so many places throughout the world. Pray for forgiveness, compassion and open minds and hearts that will listen and peacefully respond to one another.
For the people of St. Nicholas Church: pray all experience a new year that is truly filled with peace, happiness, good health and an abundance of spiritual riches.
For the homeless, those who are without adequate food and sufficient necessities: Pray that all receive that which they need and require to live happy, healthy and productive lives.
For our beloved pets: as the cold weather has settled in, let us care and protect our cherished pets by keeping them warm, well fed and protected from the harshness of the elements.
For the numerous needs of so many of the members of this community of St. Nicholas: pray for the health, well-being and safety of all our family members.
For all our St. Nicholas community members who are under the weather and in need of healing and prayers: may they find peace and be blessed with sound and better health: Joan DeBock, Courtney Adams, John G. Art Lorenze, Karen, Sharon, Elaine and Barry Malas, Jill, Connie Nicholson, Ron Glos, Marcia Kizior, Joanne Mangiaracina, Fran Baylor, Kesha, Mary Gans, Eunice Dohra, Bertha, Payton, Caleb Roth, Rocco, Ron, Jean FitzPatrick, Deacon Tom Smith, K.C., Dale Rickey, Phil Cooper, Tim Laughlin, Jackie, Chris, Cathy Walters, Carrie, Tim, Pat, Lenny, Perry, Kathy J. and any one else in need of our continued prayers and well wishes.

To Colleen Davy, Mike Golden, and Bob Kalicki, our outgoing Bishop's Committee members who have faithfully and graciously served the Community of St. Nicholas Church as members of the Bishop's Committee. Mighty good work, my dear ones. Thank you for your dedication and blessed service.
To the gang who hung around Sunday and took down our beautiful Angel Trees and crèche, put up new banners and brought the church "up to date."
The call for all hands on deck certainly was answered with such skill and care. Thanks to one and all!
To Thelma and Ray Malecek and LeWayne, Earl, Tameica and Eason Williams who popped in Saturday and helped spiff-up the church, hall and kitchen area. The place looks grand...as grand as you all are!
To our Hank Mandziara who 'caught' the running toilet in the men's room preventing gallons of water being lost and a waste of revenue. Great job, good man.
( Did you know that a running toilet can lose up to 200 gallons of water...a day! )
