The Vicar's Corner
I love Lent.  Now, some one once told me, oh, so very long ago, that it is not possible to love some thing that can not, in essence, love you back.  This may well be true.  But, I'm here to tell you, I love Lent and Lent does indeed love me in return.

You see, Lent is an invitation offered to you, to me, to all of us:  a specific, clearly defined, period of time that provides us an encyclopedic level of prayers, meditations and insightful steps at drawing us closer to the Almighty One, His only and begotten Son and the invitation of basking in the glory of the Holy Spirit.  We get these gifts daily.  However during Lent (and also during Advent) there exists a certain some thing "special:" a recognized and palpable experience and encounter of divine intimacy and a more sustaining grace and blessings.

So, just how does Lent love me back?  It does.  I can feel the warmth, the delicate and yet powerful flow and energy of the Divine overshadowing and engulfing me.  It is not scary.  It is not threatening.  Not at all.  These experiences, these encounters are peaceful, are strengthening, are sustaining and are greatly appreciated.  How could that which provides so many good and blessed gifts not be an expression of love?  Of course it is love being shared.  Absolutely it is an encounter with the Almighty One, with His loving Son and the sustaining grace of the Holy Spirit.

St. Nicholas will celebrate Lent, certainly so.  I wish to provide "communal mediation," that is, after my deliberately-shorter sermons, there will be a recognized period of silence to provide a period of meditation and reflection.  We will have a particular theme to this year's Lenten observance, too.  Come, worship and be part of this holy season.

My sisters and brothers, I ask...I invite...I pray each and every one of us opens our heart, lays bare our soul and willingly, gratefully and with much happiness invites the grace and blessings of Lent to overshadow, be upon us and stay.

The RSVP we make is not solely because it is a proper and fitting thing to do.  It is that.  Yet, our "yes" to Lent; our Amen ("Yes, I believe!") is made because it is part of our spiritual journey.  It is part of our pilgrimage as Christians who desire and delight in drawing nearer to God.

Let's journey together, shall we?  Let's all accept the invitation, RSVP in the affirmative and as willing individuals and a faith-filled community draw closer and closer to our Lord.  Trust in God...God has much in store for us.

Amen.

Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015
The Holy Season of Lent Begins
Ash Wednesday Nature has four seasons, all of which are very distinguishable, one from another.  So it goes with the Church as the calendar is broken up into a number of "seasons."  Ash Wednesday begins the 40-day period of Lent.  This is a wonderful opportunity made gift to us for deeper, more intimate personal prayer and reflection.

All are invited and encouraged to attend our Ash Wednesday Service at 7pm Wednesday evening, February 18.  Let us begin this most holy of seasons with the mark upon our forehead and the Spirit deep within our hearts.  All are certainly welcome.
Stations of the Cross
6pm Friday Evenings in Lent
Stations of the Cross The church season of Lent invites us all into deeper, more intimate prayer as individuals and as a community.  St. Nicholas invites all to come and join in communal prayer on Friday nights at 6pm, as we gather to pray the Stations of the Cross.  This time together provides moments of meditation and shared prayers as we recall the path Jesus took to Golgotha.  All are invited.
St. Nicholas' Bishop's Committee Meeting
January Minutes
Attendance taken:  Fr. Manuel Borg, Steve Raftery, Senior Warden, Jessica Tamaski, Junior Warden.  Thelma Malecek, Clerk.  Mike Golden, Kristin Jacobs, Bob Kalicki, Penny Mandziara, Neal Setchell, Also in attendance were Ray Malecek, Parish Treasurer and Hank Mandziara, Building Chairman. Excused:  Robert DeHaven.

Father Manny opened the meeting with a prayer at 8:15 A.M.

Minutes from December:  Kalicki moved approval of the minutes, Golden seconded, unanimous approval.

Building Committee Report: by Hank Mandziara for R. DeHaven:

  • As reported by Michael Ruehle, our representative to the Bishop and Trustees:  the west-side windows will need a little "building out" along the bottom of the sills in order to properly install the cables and connectors for the installation of the panels of stained glass windows.  The shades will go between the panel and the clear glass windows.  These shades will be manually operated.
  • A bypass thermostat for both the worship space and Hall will be installed.
  • The lighting restructuring is still a work in progress.
  • The back door of the church will be replaced with 10' door.  This will greatly reduce the draft that we currently experience from the current door.
  • We have had an unusual rash of falling Emergency Lights from their wall settings. These will be replaced upon inspection.
  • The radiator covers in the church have lost some brackets, making it difficult to reattach.  The fins need to be cleaned and the radiator covers need to be painted.

Financial Secretary: Bob Kalicki

Capital Campaign: in the Red!

  • The rebates that become available via the new heating/cooling system and the future installation of a new lighting system will go through the books at St. Nicholas, yet will ultimately go to the Diocese and toward repayment against our loan.
  • Bill for stained glass windows has arrived; windows are on site and (plans are) will be up for Easter.
  • Money: spent $ 9000 more than the $ 42000

General Finances:

  • Christmas offering est. was $ 3,000.00 but was halved.  However; note that $ 1500 was donated to Capital Campaign
  • Budget: Figures budgeted are at the full pledged amount (not 96%). Need $ 100,000 to run the church. Approve at Annual Mtg.
  • AA rental: $ 18 per meeting. GA pays $ 20 per month; AlAnon pays $ 40 per month, AA Sunday night in arrears
  • Some AA groups have disbanded.

Steve Raftery: Recording Secretary is needed. Manny thanked Thelma for her service. Need Secretary for Annual Meeting.

Building Usage Contract

  • BC needs to review the contract - attn: 'one time use'
Worship Space - Sunday PM on a regular basis

    Size of group, kitchen use

Support groups grandfathered ($18/meeting), new groups...
  • Father Manny conversing with St. John's Korean group that is still meeting at St John's - not likely candidate
  • Also in dialog with Monica and Chicago Bible Church (India) 5-8 families who would vacuum/clean and offered $ 50/week and - after much conversation - a motion to "allow the group to meet (in the worship space) at $ 50 per week for 6 months and renegotiate regarding the size" - the price will go up and there will be negotiation regarding the size. "Welcome packet". Clear guidelines and expectations will be in writing.

Bob Kalicki: Food Pantry - all money donations to the Pantry from 2014 have been spent.  We are blessed to have wonderful assistance from Jeff W., Jim M., Hank M., Bob K., Deacon Tom, Gary L., the support groups, Eve Gatwood, St. Simon's in Arlington Heights, and the many who contribute financially.   All are much appreciated.

Other Business:

Manny requested that all Reports for the Annual Meeting are due no later than Wednesday, January 14, 2015.

To Jessica Tamaski, our Senior Warden  and Donna Tamaski who pulled things together to make this, our 5th Annual St. Nicholas Chili Supper and Raffle such a grand event.  Way to go!

To Jeff Westerheide and Vince Otero who sliced, diced, stirred and lovingly created some of the best darn chili we've ever had and set-up the Hall. Gentlemen, our hats off to you!

To Hal and Steve for installing the beautiful Garden of Eden stained glass window, joining the other Old Testament themed panels.  And...thanks for getting the sound system up in the Hall, too.  Steady hands and open hearts.

To all the vendors, stores, restaurants and businesses in and around Elk Grove Village who generously shared with us a little bit of themselves and helped make the Raffle a great success.  Thank you, one and all for your kindness and generosity.

To EVERYONE who baked, cooked, pitched in, donated time, talent and treasure, cleaned up, reorganized the Hall and made sure all was put back where it was needed to be and made this year's Chili Supper and Raffle such a wonderful church events.  And a great and glorious time was had by all!
