The Vicar's Corner
We have arrived at the last Sunday of the Church year; that
is, the last Sunday after celebrating the feast of Pentecost way back on June 8th.  During this long period also called "Ordinary Time," the church environment, altar cloths and priestly vestments have been green in color, aside for major feast days, weddings, funerals or other such "special occasions."   The Lessons or the passages from Sacred Scripture have all come from Track 1.  There are two choices of Lessons of which to choose; Track 1 or Track 2.  At St. Nicholas, we have been using Track 1, as it is suggested and wise to stay with the Track from which you begin the year.  So now what?  Well, we begin anew.  Yes, the calendar year still has another full month to go but not the church year.  Advent begins a new church year while January 1st ushers in the new calendar year.  Get it?  Got it?  Good.

Let me share this to begin: a few days ago, some one asked me what exactly is the proper name or title of what we do on weekends in church.   My response:  actually, we have several names or titles for what we do.  Some call what we do on Saturday at 4:30 and Sunday at 10am the Holy Eucharist.  Others call it the Liturgy, some refer to it as the Service and still others call it the Mass.  Whatever title we choose, generally speaking, it is one and the same.  To make a point...we gather as a community of faith, as a family of believers, as the body that is St. Nicholas Episcopal Church.  As we gather to celebrate, we profess our faith in song, in prayers, in the reading of the Lessons which are, again, passages from Sacred Scripture, in periods of meditation and lastly and most importantly, to receive the Body and Blood of Christ in the Holy Communion.

Of course, I could get very technical and go into great detail of how our Church works.  I'll save that for another time, perhaps a workshop on just what is the Episcopal Church and how things work in this church...stay tuned.

I began all this by announcing that we have come to the end of this church year, as next week we begin the wonderful season of Advent...Latin for "arrival" or "the coming."   Advent begins the new church year and rightly so.  Advent ushers in a new year for the church just as this four-week period of time, with our Advent wreath, the purple and blue colors throughout the church brings us to realize that we are waiting for the arrival of the Messiah.  In four weeks time we will commemorate and celebrate the Birth of the Redeemer at the great feast of Christmas.  And in no time at all, we'll be entering the most holy and sacred season of Lent which precedes the greatest of all holy times of our church...Easter.  Alright, I'm getting way ahead of myself.  But, this is how quickly our church moves:  from one church season to another...from green to blue and purple, to white and gold, to blue and purple again and back to white and gold followed by, you guessed it, green again.  Just like the seasons of nature, our Church has its seasons, too.

We have much to celebrate, much for which to rejoice and give thanks.  Let us be mindful that our Lord is always beside us, guiding and protecting us.  As we move from Sundays after Pentecost to Advent, to the Sundays after Christmas to Lent and the Easter Season...Jesus is right here...ever so close and ever so dear and near.  Christ the King...Christus Rex...Quas Primus, Christi Regis...Christus, der König...whatever the language or tradition...it all means the same...Jesus Christ is King.  On this, we can all agree.  Seasons change...but not our Lord.  And for this we give praise and thanks.

Amen.

Let Us Gather and Give Thanks
Thanksgiving Eve 6pm Liturgy at St. Nicholas
thanksgiving-bounty-header.jpg We are a blessed community.  Truly, we have much for which we are thankful.

To offer our humble prayers of thanksgiving, we will once again gather to celebrate in worship on Wednesday evening, November 26th at 6pm.  All are welcome to come and share in our common faith and offer our gratitude for the abundant blessings we have received.

To each and all...Happy and a Grace-filled Thanksgiving.
A Celebration of the Life of Anna Hall
Let us gather in worship on Sunday, November 30 at 2pm at St. Nicholas
white-callalilies.jpg All are welcome and invited to come and celebrate the remarkable life of Anna Hall, mother of our Pat Kalicki.

Anna was 99 years young when Jesus called our dear sister home to Him.  Now, we shall gather and rejoice in her achievements and celebrate her entry into Paradise.  The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated to commemorate Anna's life on Sunday, November 30th at 2pm.  A light reception will follow in Holy Innocents Hall.

Again, all are warmly and cordially invited.
St. Nicholas' Bishop's Committee is Calling...
Do you have a desire to serve?
St. Nicholas' Bishop Committee (our "parish council," if you will) is calling out to the congregation:  it is that time for new members to be elected.

We are in need of four (4) candidates to be elected at our Annual Church Meeting in very early 2015.

If you feel the calling, the desire to serve on this committee, we wish you to step forward and submit your name.  Please see our wardens (parish council president and vice-president) Steve Raftery and Jessica Tamaski or Manny for additional information and/or to place your name on the ballot.

In advance, thank you, one and all.  We are only collectively as strong as our individual commitments are to our church.

A Special Shout Out...
In Thanksgiving For a Great Harvest Fair
What a two-day time we had!  Where to begin?

Well, a huge thank you to EVERYONE who took part in this wonderful parish experience:  to the vendors who brought their home made wares, to all who baked and cooked up some amazing tasty treats, to those who hung wires and curtains throughout the Hall creating a truly peaceful and calming environment, to those donated items for the raffle and those who bought raffle tickets, to those who staffed the kitchen and shared booth spaces, to the Support Groups who graciously moved their meetings to the Worship Space so we could use the entire Hall and Gathering Space, to those who came and bought and bought, to those who worked so tirelessly and selflessly and to all who made this St. Nicholas Harvest Fair truly a labor of love.

And, a special thank you to our Douglas VanHouten who created and put this whole affair together...thank you a million times over!
