The Vicar's Corner
To be completely honest, by 3pm last Saturday, I was overjoyed and relieved to know that the 2014 St. Nick's Knacks Rummage Sale had officially come to a close.

Now, don't get me wrong.  I love the rummage sale; the work and long hours involved do not put me off whatsoever.  In fact, I sort of thrive on gatherings such as these.  What I love about this event above all is the community building that takes place.  Sure, the work is hard but the benefits far outweigh the effort.  Throughout the entire week of preparation and the sale days, I took in a most beautiful and inspiring site:  members of our community working side by side.  Conversations were lively and friendly.  Plenty of smiles overcame the sweat equity!  What looked like a mountain of clothing soon became mere hills of neatly folded and hanging items after busy hands were put into action.  The boxes and boxes of nick-knacks and bric-a-brac put up little fight when our team got to work opening and sorting, cleaning and displaying every little piece.  The boutique room was loaded, the hall was jam-packed, the gathering space was filled to the brim and still, our community rolled up our collective sleeves, took a long and hearty drink of our coffee and went at it.  And who won?  St. Nicholas was again the victor!

I wish to thank ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE who made this year's St. Nick's Knacks Rummage Sale such a huge success.  First and foremost, the Good Lord for providing us such wonderful weather, to all who donated, to all who sorted and folded clothing, to all who opened boxes, cleaned and displayed bric-a-brac, to all who sold and wrapped purchased treasures, to all who cleaned and organized our place post rummage sale, to all the stores, restaurants and shops that posted our flyers, to George Davy who put together 4 pews, to Penny and her fabulous Sloppy Joe's, to Claudia and that amazing pizza, to Thelma and those ever so sweet brownies all of which kept our tummies satisfied and happy, to all who prayed for our success, to Jeanette McBeth, owner of Platinum Estate Sales of Distinction and Giles Kelley of Winning Bid Auctions both of whom donated a ton of stuff and lastly, for the steady stream of shopping-savvy customers who came, bought and left well pleased.  A job very, very well done.  Community of St. Nicholas...we did it again!

Now, let's enjoy a bit of a break.  Not too long now, as there is more coming our way.

God bless us, each and every one.

Children's Formation Volunteers Needed
Asking for some help, please!
Kids holding hands around planet The "academic" portion of our church year is about to begin.  Starting Sunday, September 7th, our Children's and Young People's Formation starts up.

Val Gruenwald will lead the class on the 1st Sunday of the month.  Though, we are in need of assistance to help out on the 3rd Sunday of each month.  This is where we need your help.

Consider taking one Sunday to teach and engage our children.  Write letters to our home-bound parishioners; prepare a simple meal for our parishioners who have been ill of late; bake cookies for the food pantry; create "care packages" for a serviceman or women serving our country overseas; tour the autumn gardens and begin an "indoor garden" for the winter season; study a recipe and bake bread for use at our weekend Liturgy...there are so many options and ideas.

We are grateful to  those who have stepped up and will help provide some assistance.  Who's next?  There's plenty of room and certainly plenty of opportunities.   The more, the better and the merrier.

So, please pray and give serious consideration to being a leader, a teacher and a disciple and teach our children well.

Contact Val Gruenwald or Manny and in advance, a heart-felt thank you.

On September 19th, St. Nicholas will be part of this ministry for the first time.  We will provide the meal which will be prepared and served at Christus Victor Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Our own Vince Ortero and Jeff Westerheide will coordinate this event.  Jeff, Vince and our Laura Lampe have long been involved in this very important and necessary ministry.  There is always room for more helping hands...

More information regarding the September 19th meal will be forthcoming.  Stay tuned.  Mark your calendar and plan on helping out.

God bless us, one and all.

Jesus is the truth, is our doorway to freedom.  Yet all of us find areas of resistance to Jesus or areas of bondage that limit our free response to His love as we seek to follow Him--areas where we might feel spiritually "struck."  If you are looking for practical help to move yourself or others out of bondage to any sin or any limiting life pattern (such as ongoing anger, anxiety, sadness and depression), this Healing Mission may be of help.  In addition to the teaching being presented, there will be opportunities to receive safe and loving ministry from trained teams.

Prayer Requests
The Community of St. Nicholas is praying
For Harry, a friend of St.Nicholas who continues to receive treatment for cancer; for his recovery and return to sound and lasting good health.

For the repose of the soul of Michael Brown, the young man who was shot to death in Ferguson, Missouri.  May he rest in peace and may comfort and solace be with his family and friends who grieve his passing.

For peace in our country, especially in Ferguson, Missouri:  a town torn by civil strife and racial unrest.  Almighty God, bless and sustain us all.

For those who struggle with depression, anxiety, loneliness and despair:  pray for peace in their hearts and souls.

For all creatures, great and small:  their protection, preservation and care.

For the homeless throughout the region who struggle to find housing now that the PADS sites are closed for the season: pray all our troubled sisters and brothers find security, safety and shelter.

For all our St. Nicholas community members who are under the weather and in need of healing and prayers:  may they find peace and be blessed with sound and better health: Connie Nicholson, Joanne Mangiaracina, Vernon Forde, Richard and Mary Gans, Eunice Dohra, Anna Hall, Paula O' Conner, Dale Rickey, John Knepper, Jim Laughlin, Jackie, Chris, Silas Pociask, Cathy Walters, Ed Baehr, Carrie, June and any one else in need of our continued prayers and well wishes.

For our military personnel who are overseas and engaged in battle:  that they soon return home safe and secure.

For the members of the Support Groups at St. Nicholas who endure, "one day at at time," in their daily battles against addiction.
