The Vicar's Corner
The build-up to any event certainly has a tendency to wear upon us.  We wait.  We anticipate.  The event arrives.  We're all engaged, involved and being part of some thing bigger than ourselves.  This is how I view our annual rummage sale.  Sure...it's only a "rummage sale."  The name really says it all...rummage.  But, for a community such as ours, what with our size and make-up, this IS a big event.  This is something bigger than all of us and yet, the effort put forth by so many ultimately benefits each and every one of us.

All the build-up, the hard work, the collecting and sorting, displaying and pricing is but a mere flash in the bigger picture of time.  But this is "our time." This small, miniscule, fraction of time means a great deal to St. Nicholas.  This small step allows us to take bigger steps, more important and vital steps...steps, if you will, that are life-creating and life-sustaining.

Know this also my friends: our rummage sale is more than just the "bottom dollar," that is, how much we are fortunate enough in financially accruing from all our hard work.  The sale is also about building community, forging deeper, more intimate and lasting relationship with one another. We've all heard this before, but in these kinds of fundraisers, it is essential we stress the "fun" in fundraising while we go about our work.

We are about to undertake some major work, major updating to our worship space and Hall.  The work will begin immediately after the rummage sale concludes.   Stage One begins and there is indeed, much more work to come.

And when all the work is finally done, like our rummage sale, we will all be able to take a deep breath, hold it for a moment, exhale and enjoy the fruits of our labor.

St. Nick's Knacks Rummage Sale is Here!
August 15 & 16, Friday and Saturday
It's been talked about, advertised and collected for.  And now, it's finally here: our annual St. Nick's Knacks Rummage Sale.  And what a sale it promises to be.

If you haven't been in our building this week, get a sneak peek by clicking on these links to some of our ads with pictures:

We're also in the Tribune and Daily Herald, on local EGV Facebook sites, and on the village marquee.  We hope to have large crowds with hands out of pockets and transactions being made!  Bargains galore...who can resist?

Yet, we could still use some help.  The items are just itching to be bought.  So, please spread the word, share on Facebook and let your workmates and friends know.  All are welcome to come and worship at St. Nicholas...all are certainly welcome to come and shop here, too!

It's not too late to sign up to volunteer.  We need lots of folks, especially on Friday when we first open up at 9am (please arrive before opening time) and again on Saturday afternoon when we close up at 3pm.  If you have one, please wear your St. Nicholas t-shirt.  Everything left has to be bagged or boxed up on Saturday afternoon.  Please consider pitching in.  Trust us, we need you!

This is going to be a great event. Share in the fun and excitement by sharing in the work and effort!  God bless us, one and all and may this year's sale be a smashing success.

Children's Formation Volunteers Needed
Asking for some help, please!
Noah's Ark Space We are planning our Children's and Young People's Formation Program at St. Nicholas which starts up again in September.

Val Gruenwald will lead the class on the 1st Sunday of the month.  However, we are seeking some assistance for the 3rd Sunday of the month.  Consider taking one or two Sundays to teach our children how to bake the bread we use at our Liturgy; take them out to the gardens and show how to plant seed and bulbs and explain the miracles of nature and how God blesses us with these gifts; create cards and letters for our sisters and brothers who are unable to join us at church on the weekends...there are so many options and ideas.

So, please pray and give serious consideration to being a leader, a teacher and disciple and teach our children well.

Contact Val Gruenwald or Manny and in advance, a heart-felt thank you.
Just in Case of an Emergency
A little, but helpful suggestion for all
graphic-heart.gif We are blessed to have a few medically-trained personal in our extended faith community.  So, a free, public announcement to our entire parish family:

If you take any medications please make sure to keep a list on you at all times either in your wallet or purse or even on your smart phone. Your list should include the name, dosage and frequency. Also include any over-the-counter medications or supplements you take. In an emergency situation when a doctor or paramedic ask what medication you take, "a small white pill and a big beige pill" response is not helpful to them, and may be harmful to you.

If you feel comfortable with sharing this information, you may wish to provide said list to Manny who will keep it confidential and secure in his office to be available if/when needed.

Having this information on hand could be the difference between life and, well, you know what.

Thanks all.  Let's keep one another healthy, happy and safe.

Prayer Requests
The Community of St. Nicholas is praying
For the repose of the soul of Glenna Kleinsmith, a long-ago member of Holy Innocents Parish.  May Glenna rest in the full and lasting peace of Christ our Lord.  Pray for Beth and Steve Anderson, Glenn's daughter and son-in-law who grieve and mourn.

For Teresa Lennon who is in hospice and preparing for her next stage in life.  Teresa has severely advanced brain cancer.  Terese is the wife of Brian who is our Cyndi DeBock's cousin.  Pray for Brian and two daughters Jessica and Brittany that God grant them strength and guidance and that Teresa not suffer and is soon welcomed home to Paradise.

For the people of South Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Israel, Palestine and the Ukraine who live with constant violence and war.  Let us pray for peace in these regions and a lasting end to the misery and pain inflicted upon all.

For the people of Sierra Leone and Nigeria who suffer from the Ebola epidemic:  Pray that aid reaches those in greatest need and that these nations recovers quickly from this horrific situation.

For our beloved pets who bring such happiness and joy to our lives.  Pray they are safe, healthy and always cared for.

For those who struggle with depression, anxiety, loneliness and despair:  pray for peace in their hearts and souls.

For the homeless throughout the region who struggle to find housing now that the PADS sites are closed for the season: pray all our troubled sisters and brothers find security, safety and shelter.

For all our St. Nicholas community members who are under the weather and in need of healing and prayers:  may they find peace and be blessed with sound and better health: Connie Nicholson, Joanne Mangiaracina, Vernon Forde, Richard and Mary Gans, Eunice Dohra, Anna Hall, Paula O' Conner, Dale Rickey, John Knepper, Jim Laughlin, Jackie, Chris, Silas Pociask, Cathy Walters, Ed Baehr, Carrie, June and any one else in need of our continued prayers and well wishes.

For our military personnel who are overseas and engaged in battle:  that they soon return home safe and secure.

For the members of the Support Groups at St. Nicholas who endure, "one day at at time," in their daily battles against addiction.

To those caring and "johnny-on-the-spot" individuals who came to the rescue Sunday when a fellow parishioner took ill...your kindness, swift action and compassion were so greatly appreciated.

To Jack Groat of Little Boots Rodeo who made not one, but two large cookie and cracker donations this past week...and every waistline expresses its thanks.

Our pets truly are members of the family

Much thanks go to our Carol Payne who wishes to share this important website with the parish family.

It is certainly safe to say that all of us who have or have had pets know how vitally important these beautiful creatures are to us.  Whether our pet be a dog or a cat, hamster or gerbil, a frog or a snake...these creatures, great and small, are loved, cherished and counted as members of our family.

For more information about the loving care of our animals with a spiritual bent, please consider going to the website posted below.  Perhaps there may be some thing there that will provide vital and inspiring information.
