The Vicar's Corner

The other day in the parish office, Thelma handed me a sheet of paper; a copy of the "Movin' Out" magazine. "The Journal of the Trucking Industry."  It was one single sheet but filled with a lovely story, a 'prayer' if you will from a rather historical U.S. figure I suspect very few people have ever heard of.  I'd like to share a bit about this gentleman and also share his beautiful and pointed piece about...God!

"Robert E. Harris, 'The Circuit Rider,' was the nations' last practicing circuit rider preacher until his death in 2007.  His ministry took him to numerous towns throughout western North Carolina as well as rest areas along I-40.

"God Really is Everywhere."

"Retrospective reveals that God has never failed us.  So many times in this life we are tempted to accuse God of failure.  Sometimes we wonder if God really loves us when we see the situations we get into and seemingly there's no way out.  Then we ask, 'Where is God?'

The answer to, 'Where is God?' is this:  God is EVERYWHERE.  He is like radio and television but you have to have your set turned on.  Your heart is the receiver of God.  Not only does the set have to be turned on, but it has to be tuned in until there is no static.  When a person lives with nothing between the world and the Savior, he can know that God is a rewarder of all who diligently seek Him.

God once told Samuel, "Your have prayed  and wept all night and I am not going to change my mind.  The thing for you to do is to get up and go on and do what I have told you to do."

Gracious Heavenly Father, help us to live in the Light of the Word for Jesus' sake.  Amen."

These words of Robert E. Harris echo the very words I preached just a few weeks ago:  Jesus never has left our side.  Jesus has always been and always will be ever so close to us.  We need only reach out and we can almost "touch Him," as He walks beside us.

Our faith must never cower to thoughts of being abandoned or neglected by Jesus.  I realize, better than most perhaps, that there are times we all feel as if we are left alone, to fend for ourselves.  This couldn't be further from the truth.  I know it.  You know it.  We just have to keep remembering that this was Jesus' promise to us, " I will always be with you, even until the end of the ages."  (Matt. 28: 20)

Let us all embrace the full, lasting and eternal presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus our Most Holy Redeemer.  I find comfort and peace knowing that when seemingly, things are so out of control, that in the midst of all that is going on around me, Jesus is there, guiding and strengthening me. It is this reassuring presence that keeps me going; that gives me the courage to endure and the wisdom to move ever forward and onward.  I hope and pray we all have this very same degree of faith and confidence...it is life saving!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls of All Ages
The circus is coming to town!  Well, sort of...
Circus Tent The annual Elk Grove Village Parade is just around the corner.  This year's theme:  "Under the Big Top."  Having been accused of running a 'three-ring circus' here at St. Nicholas, it should come natural for us to to be part of this year's event.

The parade begins at 2pm on Saturday, June 14th.  Participants would meet here at St. Nicholas, gather our forces and make our presence felt!

All are welcome to get their best face on...clown face that is (not essential but fun nonetheless), don our blue "Follow Me to St. Nicholas" t-shirts and have ourselves one heck of a time.

There will be a Parade Committee meeting this Sunday, May 18, following the 10AM service.  Anyone interested is more than welcome to attend! Penny Mandziara will chair this committee.  Let's see if we can match, if not top last year's St. Nicholas presence!

Questions?  Please click here to contact Penny.
Children's Formation Meets This Sunday
A reminder that Children's Formation will meet this Sunday, May 18, following the 10AM service.  By the way, have you seen the transformed Noah's Ark Space, where the children meet? Come and take a peek!
Noah's Ark Space
Adult Bible Study Meets This Sunday
While the children are in their own formation program, join us in the church for Adult Bible Study this Sunday, May 18th following the 10AM service.  We're continuing our discussion of Islam, and all are welcome.
New Adult Ed. Group
Contemporary Issues Discussion Group
The new Contemporary Issues Adult Ed. Group had a wonderful first discussion of Justice, Law and the Church in April. We'll next meet in the Noah's Ark Space on May 25th following the 10AM service. All are welcome to join the discussion. Questions? Please contact Steve Gruenwald.
Lutheran Choir of Chicago is Coming to St. Nicholas Church on Sunday, June 1
All are encouraged and warmly invited to come and listen and enjoy
Lutheran Choir of Chicago Poster What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon...the sounds of well tuned and trained voices in song.  On Sunday June 1st at 4pm, St. Nicholas will proudly host the Lutheran Choir of Chicago for an afternoon of joyful music and song.

Tickets will be made available very soon at a cost of $10.00 per person.  We hope for a large and enthusiastic contingent representing St. Nicholas as we open our doors to our friends of the Lutheran Choir of Chicago.

And as an added bonus: Mary Fletcher-Gomez, who sings with the choir, will be selling a limited number of tickets at the reduced price of $5.00 to St. Nicholas members. First come, first served.

Let's all come, listen, enjoy and celebrate in a late spring concert that will undoubtedly bring a warm smile to our face.
Coffee Hour
Want to take on leading & scheduling this ministry?
Coffee hour We have had inconsistent results with asking people to sign up to host coffee hour.  It seems it might it be a good time to ask someone to take over the scheduling and organization of this particular ministry.  Community is central to who we are, so this is a wonderful opportunity for someone (or a team of people) to make sure systems are in place so that we all might enjoy fellowship after the services.

Even as we hope for a leader / leaders for this ministry, a reminder that every week we must be sure to clean up after coffee hour (loading cups into the dishwasher, vacuuming the floor, pouring leftover coffee into the support groups' coffee urns and clearing away our coffee hour supplies).  These tasks have on a few recent occasions fallen to a support group leader who comes in after us, and that is not how it should be.

Please give serious thought as to whether you might be just the person to serve your community of faith in this manner!  Please contact Manny if your answer is yes.
Prayer Requests
The Community of St. Nicholas is praying
little-boy-praying.jpgFor the repose of the souls of Alfred and Nina Marshal who were both killed in a car accident in Missouri on Wednesday afternoon, May 8th:  May they rest in the full and eternal peace of Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Mr. & Mrs. Marshal are the grandparents of Robert Frazier, who is Ryan Black's spouse and Katie Black's son-in-law.)

For the hundreds of young Nigerian school girls kidnapped in Africa:  pray that all these innocents are released immediately, safe, secure and returned home to their families.

For Fred, Thelma's cousin who suffered a stroke:  pray for his continued recovery and return to sound health.

For Latoya, a nurse friend of Thelma who is having some health issues:  pray she regains good and sound health very soon.

For John Knepper who continues his therapy after shoulder surgery...prayers for your swift recovery.  My apologies John for the typo in last week's News From Nick.  By no means do I or anyone wish you " a little pain in your therapy."  That should have said, "and as little pain as possible in your therapy."   Hope my error at least brought a smile to your face!  Again, I am most sorry, John.

For our friend Dale Rickie who is undergoing serious medical tests and procedures:  for strength and patience and that Dale is healed and blessed.

For Clarence Nelson, (88 years young), Ray Malecek's cousin who is in respiratory rehabilitation:  pray Clarence continues to improve and regain sound health.

For Eleanor Stiles, (90 years young), a friend of the Malecek family who is experiencing congestive heart failure: pray for Eleanor that she find comfort and stable health.

For Mark McQuade, Jim's nephew who suffered a very bad fall which resulted in a fractured skull.  Mark is experiencing extremely painful headaches...pray he regains sound and lasting good health and is once for all free of any and all pain.

For the homeless throughout the region who struggle to find housing now that the PADS sites are closed for the season: pray all our troubled sisters and brothers find security, safety and shelter.

Prayers for Shannon Estes, aunt of Colleen Davy who is dealing with complications brought on by diabetes:  pray Shannon finds healing and is able to fight strongly against her diabetes.

For all our St. Nicholas community members who are under the weather and in need of healing and prayers:  may they find peace and be blessed with sound and better health: Ethel "Corky" Stratton, Connie Nicholson, Joanne Mangiaracina, Vernon Forde, Richard Gans, Eunice Dohra, and any one else in need of our continued prayers and well wishes.

For our military personnel who are overseas and engaged in battle:  that they soon return home safe and secure.

For those who are suffering from the pain of depression:  may their burdens be lightened and may they find healing.

For the members of the Support Groups at St. Nicholas who endure, "one day at at time," in their daily battles against addiction.

Shout-Outs
For Vernon's proclamation of the Gospel and sharing with us his faith in the preached word.  Blessings to you, dear Vernon.

For the good people of St. Simon's Episcopal Church in Arlington Heights and in particular the Children's Group of St. Simon's  who dropped off 2 dozen shopping bags of ready-to-make pasta dinners and other food supplies for our pantry.  God bless you all for your continued generosity and kindness.

For Jack Groat and the good people of Little Boots Rodeo who dropped off 30+ cases of cookies and crackers...our pantry floweth over because of your continued sharing and caring.

For our Connie Nicholson who after a long day at the office still had the energy, time and desire on Wednesday afternoon to stop by, pull out weeds and trim our beautiful St. Nicholas Gardens...Go, Connie, Go!

For Marilyn Brown, Connie's able assistant who got her hands dirty and helped with the gardens of St. Nicholas.  Two (Green) Thumbs Up!
