There is a rather endearing sentiment when it comes to a high school play. I haven't been to such a play, well, since my senior year and that was back in 1975-76. Sadly, I can't even remember the play and I was in it! Honestly, I figured those were the sort of memories I'd never forget...and sadly, I've forgotten. Nonetheless, recently Douglas and I decided to do something "out of the box." So, we chose to support the "local art scene," brave the cold and dark of night and attend the Johnsburg High School presentation of "Into the Woods." We both love the play and Johnsburg is just up the road a piece. The kids did a very nice job with a very difficult play. Stephen Sondheim is a genius and this play is wonderful. Sondheim takes several classic tales, blends and mixes them together with song and dance and weaves a delightful story. If you have seen it...see it again. If you've never seen it...make a point of renting the Broadway version (Bernadette Peters plays the Wicked Witch in this version) or catch a performance when it's in the area. I believe you can catch some or most of the play via Netflix. At various points in the play, the characters, in turn, share with the audience particularly pointed and rather provocative statements, comments and little nuggets of wisdom. This may well be my favorite part of the play...those little quips "hit home" and they continue to stay with me. So, I wish to share with you today and for the next several weeks, which coincidentally coincides with the holy season of Lent, a few of those "one-liners." Granted, some of these one-liners are "play-specific" and wouldn't make much sense outside the play itself. However others have a keen connection with faith and life. If we peel back the surface and look deep within, we may well indeed find some rather wonderful, pleasantly sacred and divinely-inspired material that fits so well with Lent. Was this a deliberate ploy of Mr. Sondheim? Who knows. Regardless, we will take some "liberty" and assume "license" because with God, nothing trumps the Creator and all is fair with God and stage. "Opportunity is not a lengthy visitor." Lent is ripe with opportunity. However, Lent is "limited," in that this holy and sacred season is only 6 weeks long; a mere 40 days. Lent truly does not linger very long with us. Opportunity knocks but not too often. Lent comes and goes. Lent's visit is hardly lengthy. We are gifted with this rather unique church season to better prepare ourselves to truly celebrate the great Paschal Feast of Easter. In order to be at "our best," we have 40 days to prepare ourselves; to cleanse our heart and soul, to refresh and revive the spirit. Then, we are ready to celebrate, to rejoice and sing out in joy to the victorious Jesus who conquers sin and death, once for all. Let's make sure we seize opportunity and make good use of this visitor's time with us. Let us make sure, genuinely and sincerely we welcome this visitor, this Visiting Lent, and open ourselves to the experience and make good use of the gifts this seasonal visitor brings. -Manny

A blessed, Lenten exercise for all
|
Lent is such a unique and wonderful time. We are afforded these 40 days to pray, to meditate and to move "inwardly" and separate ourselves, for just a while, from the business of the day-to-day grind and place ourselves in the presence of the Creator and God's son. We are invited to delve deeper into private prayer, to immerse ourselves in some well-deserved and well-appreciated silence, too. Equally, we are invited to pray, as a community. One of the oldest and most beloved form of prayer is the Stations of the Cross. All are invited to traverse the path with Jesus; from the garden to the cross. We will gather on Thursday evenings at the church at 6pm, starting March 13th until Thursday, April 10th. Come, pray and feel the Lord's presence...He is waiting of us.

The Community of St. Nicholas is praying for:
|
For the community of St. Nicholas, our Diocese, the Episcopal Church and all Christians the world over as we begin the holy and prayerful season of Lent: that our hearts are opened and exposed to the voice of the Lord and we, in turn, listen to what He is saying...
For all who are subjected to the harshness of the cold and wind without proper shelter or clothing: pray adequate and affordable housing options are created and proper outerwear is shared with all.
For Hal's cousin who has been diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. Tests will continue to determine the next course of medical intervention to be taken. Let us pray that strength and faith are in abundance for Hal's cousin and his family and friends.
For victims of racism, sexism, homophobia and elitism...let us all treat one another equally and fairly.
For members of our community who are unemployed, over and under employed: that all may find peace in a chosen and desired vocation that sustains and affords a comfortable life. For all our St. Nicholas community members who are under the weather and in need of healing and prayers: may they find peace and be blessed with sound and better health. Ruth Harber, Joanne Mangiaracina, Taylor Gans, Richard Gans, Eunice Dohra, Marilyn Brown, Corky Stratton and any one else in need of our continued prayers and well wishes. For our military personnel who are overseas and engaged in battle: that they soon return home safe and secure. For those who are suffering from the pain of depression: may their burdens be lightened and may they find healing. For the members of the Support Groups at St. Nicholas who endure, "one day at at time," in their daily battles against addiction.

To Jeff Westerheide and Vince Ortero who donated their time, food supplies and put their culinary skills to work and dished up some mighty good chili...and every tummy says thank you so much!
To Colleen and George Davy who sweetened things out with their donation of ice cream...the perfect topping to the Chili Supper.
To LeWayne, Earl and Eason Williams who made sure things were "just right" by setting up tables, chairs, washing windows and spiffying-up the bathrooms...you are some thing else, truly!
To Val Gruenwald, Penny and Hank Mandziara and Paulie Tamaski who prepared gift baskets, wrapped gifts, made sure "this goes here and that goes there" and were "johnny-on-the-spot" with their skills and sharing!
To Mindy and Mike Golden, the Tamaski family, the Williams family, Hal and Steve, Douglas, and even a few visitors who stuck around and helped clean up the Hall...a job well done to one and all.
To Jessica and Donna Tamaski who, yet again, did a super-duper job making this year's Chili Supper another fun and successful occasion.
To our community members of St. Nicholas who provided specially-prepared gift baskets...such loving touches and all greatly appreciated.
To all the stores, restaurants and generous donors who pitched in and shared their wares with us and helped make the Chili Supper Raffle a fun and enjoyable time. And the winning number is... To all who did so much to help make our 4th Annual St. Nicholas Chili Supper such a wonderful success...those who chopped onions, set up tables, cleaned the Hall, put things back in order and to everyone who came, ate and shared their evening with St. Nicholas...a great community in action and all for God's greater glory. Amen.
