The Vicar's Corner
History can be, on occasion, rather unclear.  In fact history conceals key truths and accuracies that only fosters continued speculation and hypotheses.  Some things are sheer fact - no question, no doubt.  Other things, well, are not so clear.  There are many questions that need to be posed.  In the "spirit" of Christmas, I'll share with you a little bit of that "unsubstantiated history" whose origin is up for debate.

The Christmas carol posted here is one such piece of history that really has no clear lineage.  Some claim one thing while others hold fast to another historical tract.  One source has the song's origin to be found in France while another school of thought adamantly states the song was "born" in Jolly Ol' England.  Are the lyrics a Catechism for Christians who are not allowed to practice their faith?  Some say yes while others say, not so fast.   Regardless...this piece of Christmas lore has provided many smiles and much comforting warmth since it was first sung oh, so many, many years ago.

And yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and yes, Virginia, this song does have, for all of us a very special meaning and message.

Read on and if you so wish, sing along...it is Christmas time, after all!

"The 12 Days of Christmas":

*The partridge in the pear tree represents Jesus Christ.

*The two turtle doves represent the Old and New Testament.

*The three French hens represent Faith, Hope and Love.

*The four calling birds are the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

*The five golden rings recall the Torah, or Law; the first five books of the Old Testament.

*The six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation.

*The seven swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit...Prophesy, Service, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy.

*The eight maids a-milking are the Eight Beatitudes.

*The nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit...Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control.

*The ten lords a-leaping represent the Ten Commandments.

*The eleven pipers piping stand for the eleven faithful disciples.

*The twelve drummers drumming symbolize the twelve points of belief in the Apostles Creed.

There you are; a little history to savor and share.  Christmas is a special time for sharing, though our faith calls us to be good stewards and share our gifts, our talents, our blessings and our faith throughout the year.  Yet, sharing takes on a special and sacred nature right about now.  Maybe because we do so in honor and in a show of our love for the Christ Child who came to us, in human form and continues to live within each and every one of us.

Enjoy and celebrate...as now you know, sort of, "the rest of the story."

Amen.

Christmas Comes But Once a Year...
Let's decorate the church!
Santa is pretty busy these days and he can not spare any of his elves.  So, calling all eager and willing bodies to help get our church ready for Christmas.candycane-burst.jpg

After the 10am Sunday Liturgy on December 22nd, we will get our worship space all decorated and prepared to celebrate the great feast of The Nativity of Christ.

Our beautiful Angel Tree will come to fruition and lights will go up throughout.  But, we need some help.  So, please consider hanging around, coffee and treat in tote and pitch in.

In advance, thank you one and all.

Busy Weekend at St. Nicholas
What's on tap...
This is the third "full" weekend of the month, though the fourth Sunday.  Nonetheless, we will be celebrating a few monthly traditions:

Penny Mandziara will proclaim the Gospel and share her reflection with us.

Also, members of the Order of St. Luke will share their healing and anointing ministry with us.

Bible Study will be held in the Noah's Ark space following the Sunday 10AM service; we'll discuss the Advent theme of Peace.  All are welcome to come and share.

How wonderful...the Sacrament of Baptism will be celebrated at the 10AM Sunday Liturgy.  What a joy to "raise up" a new member of the Church!

After Sunday's 10AM Liturgy, the church will be decorated for Christmas...all hands on deck!

Come and be part of the spirit and rejoicing at St. Nicholas. All are always welcome.

Shout-Outs
thankyou_basket_hdr.jpg
To Marilyn Brown for sewing and installing the lovely curtain in the sacristy...nothing like those comfortable touches of home to make a place just that much warmer and more welcoming.

To Val, Rose and Molly Gruenwald who set up and organized and all our young people who hosted a number of our parishioners at a lovely luncheon last Sunday.  Your kindness is so welcoming and appreciated.

To Diane and her husband who led us in the fine art of wreathe- and bow-making at our Make a Wreath Night Gathering. A great time was had by all. Can't wait for next year.

To Hal and Steve who supplied the pizza and pastry for our Friday the 13th Wreath Making Event. Oh, the joys of sweet and savory goodies.

To all who came and made the Wreath Making Night such a big hit...a community that prays and plays together stays strong together!

To Hank Mandziara, Mike Golden, Hal Stratton and Steve Raftery who put in some 'elbow grease' and constructed the Christmas tree...now, come Sunday the 22nd, we shall decorate and rejoice!
