The Vicar's Corner

It is not often I am afforded 6 days to gather with Episcopal clergy from around the country, (actually, from around the world) to share mission, prayers, laughter, fears and joy.  The day-to-day commitments and responsibilities of parochial ministry and my life outside the church--that is my home life and all that revolves around that keeps me on the go.  I am sure all of us can resonate with, and appreciate this busy way of life because all of us have that same life style in common!

The past week in the balmy, dark, southern woods of Fairhope, Alabama, in the heart of the Gulf Coast Episcopal Diocese, 20 participants and 8 staff members gathered to journey as a community of faith and people of God to seek His counsel and comfort.  We shared that which we felt able to, difficult as it was for many of us, though all the while we held close to the heart the grace and peace made gift to us all.  Strangers as we began though friends as we departed one another, unified and committed to remain connected in prayer, faith and friendship.

My week at CREDO strengthened an already healthy and loving desire to serve God and His people.  This added encouragement, guidance and direction, which was made and offered as gift, I hope and pray will aid and assist not just me but all of us as we go about the work for which we have been commissioned.  We know what our tasks are; we know what is our calling...to build God's house strong and enduring and all the while, sing the praises of Jesus the Word made Flesh.

I will fondly remember all those wonderful, delightful and dedicated women and men.  I will smile when I think of the joyful laughter and the amusing stories we shared.  I will regale in the late-night zip-line adventure and the night-time fishing, both of which I partook and enjoyed beyond telling!  My heart will be heavy when I recall the powerful stories shared by my sister and brother clergy and how, with faith and the Spirit's guidance, continue to do what they must to bring the Good News of Jesus the Redeemer into the lives of all.

My dear community of St. Nicholas, I ask you to pray for these ministers as you pray for one another and all our loved ones.  I ask God to bless and sustain them.  And, in our prayers, let us raise our intentions for all who labor in the field we call the Church; our Lay Staff, Office Volunteers, Musicians, Children and Adult Formation Directors, Altar Guilds, Vestry and Bishop Committee members, Building, Liturgy, Environment Team Members, Vergers, Sextons, Maintenance, the countless and selfless other volunteers and all who share Time, Talent and Treasure to build the Church universal and in particular and much, much closer to home and heart, this house of worship, our Community of St. Nicholas.

Movie Night at St. Nicholas
This Friday, October 25, at 6:30PM
movie-collage.jpg How about some chills and spine-tingling suspense?  Well, it's almost Halloween and that means we need the perfect "seasonal movie."

THIS Friday night, October 25th at 6:30PM we will be showing the original version of "The Haunting."  A classic suspense movie in blissful black and white.  Leaves us wondering what really is happening in this old and mysterious house.

The movie first aired in 1963 and stars Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Richard Johnson.  The movie is "PG," so be mindful of younger children.  (This is not a "slasher movie."  There are no graphic nor distressful scenes; plenty of sound effects of a mysterious nature.)

Pizza will be served; bring along some snacks if you'd like, too. If your plans change and you are able to come though you may not have signed up, fear not - all are welcome!

See you then...if you dare!
Trunk-or-Treat - THIS SUNDAY!
A time to gather as community; to decorate our car trunks for Halloween and provide a safe and fun trick-or-treating environment for neighborhood children
We hope you'll plan to decorate the trunk of your vehicle and join us as we welcome children to a fun and safe Trunk-or-Treating this Sunday, October 27, from 1-4PM.  Our cars, with trunks decorated for Halloween, will be in our parking lot and children in costume are welcome to make their way from car to car seeking candy.

Think of it as a community tailgate party.

Donations of bags of candy are warmly welcomed (there is a collection box in the gathering space).

If you would like to decorate your car and participate in what promises to be a fun event, please email Donna Tamaski.

Announcing Your New Volunteers for Bulletins and Worship Details
Our own Pat Kalicki is such a powerhouse that it's now taking several people to do what she has so beautifully done for so long to assist us all.  We'd like to share with the community the list of people who stepped up to the plate so that Pat may concentrate on healing:
  • Hal Stratton will continue to design the Saturday bulletin, and will post worship readings and inserts to the shared online folders.

  • Donna Tamaski will design the Sunday bulletin.

  • Jennifer Garcia will print and fold the Saturday and Sunday bulletins for the upcoming weekend, with Bob DeHaven serving as back-up printer.|

  • Tameica Williams will type and upload the Prayers of the Assembly to the shared online folders.

  • Douglas VanHouten will continue as designer and editor of our newsletter, and will now format and print hard copies of News from Nick for the welcome table. He will also produce the monthly calendar and distribute via email.

  • Jennifer Brundige will send Prayers of the Assembly and readings via email to both Saturday and Sunday lectors/intercessors the week leading up to their assignments.

We thank each of these people, and in a very special way, thank Pat for her generosity of time and talent and wish her a very speedy recovery.
