A few weeks ago, May 2nd to be exact, the clergy of the various houses of worship in the Village gathered at the Shinnyo-en Chicago Temple to celebrate National Prayer Day. What an amazing gathering it was. Cyndi DeBock and I proudly and joyfully represented the Community of St. Nicholas. The Temple--and my dear friends, what a beautiful and serene place it is--was filled. Dignitaries representing governmental offices in the Village were present along with members from almost every house of worship.
Our hosts were most gracious and welcoming. Their humble and graceful bows ushered us into the prayer space and wished us well as we departed their company. For me, I truly felt I was in the presence of the Almighty and God's children were gathered to sing the praises of the Creator. I'd like to share with you my prayer which focused specifically on peace. It is my hope you all enjoy this prayer as much I enjoyed writing and sharing it with you.
Prayer for Victims of War and Hope for Peace
God of all, Creator of life, author and fulfillment and the embodiment of peace: We your children, formed in your image, little less than the angels, blessed with gifts of reason and intellect, the knowledge to distinguish the variance between right and wrong, possessors of the wisdom and abilities of restorative health, yet guilty of destroying life in catastrophic measure. You bathe us in the light of Your full and glorious divinity, an eternal light that dispels the darkest of dark with an illumination that burns away any hindrance to envisioning Your majesty and wonder, Your countenance is reflected in our human form. And still, we struggle to see... Our vision is blurred... We reach out and grasp for, blindly and aimlessly at unity with our sisters and brothers the worldwide. We fumble in our efforts to embrace all that is of peace and harmony. We, your very progeny, blessed with so much and bestowed with a wealth of insight and intellect, sadly, yet poorer than poor are we in our efforts at ridding our world of violence, war, hatred and mistrust between the nations. Your prophet Isaiah proclaimed the mandate to all, a manuscript and a blue print of how we are to live, "to hammer our swords into ploughshares and our spears into sickles. One nation is not to raise the sword against another, nor are we to train for war any longer." Yet we fail and many, so very many, are burdened and challenged, victims of this inhuman treatment we inflict upon one another. Bless us; we pray, with a deepness of soul in order for us to harness our strength and abilities for the good and betterment of our world and relations, one to another... To suppress powerful overthrows and to say NO MORE to the strong that attack and victimize the vulnerable. To once for all inhale, digest, and swallow the wisdom that vengeance and hatred only breeds and fosters additional vengeance and hatred. Inspire us, Almighty One; open wide our minds and hearts to better teach our children that love conquers all, without the use of weapons that only serves the needs of the cowardice. Open wide our hearts to be true and faithful stewards of all peoples; neighbor to neighbor, nation to nation. That black and white are recognized as shades of one another; that Israel and Palestine realize their ancestral limb that has suffered deeply for centuries; that no faith is viewed as violent or another superior to others, rather all faiths are revered, reverenced and respected. Thus, will our children learn well and they in turn, will teach their children... Instruct us, Creator God, author of peace to be meek and gentle of heart. Guide us, Oh most glorious of Lights and illumine our path, direct us, evermore, to be loving to a fault, to forgive not 7 times but 70 times 7 times and forever and always are we to adhere to the greatest of Your commandments...to love one another. We ask this, in one common voice and in union of all our receptive and willing hearts diverse yet united... Amen. -Manny |

Bishop's Committee Meeting Report
|
All members of the Bishop's Committee were present on Sunday morning for our monthly meeting. Good news - the replacement parts are in to repair the patio doors in Holy Innocents Hall. In the near future, there will be fully functioning doors again. The application was accepted by Elk Grove Village for St. Nicholas to have a float in the upcoming village parade on June 15. The theme of the parade is 'Sports on the Boulevard.' Paul Swanson is heading the team to put the float together and gather volunteers to walk in the parade. The theme of our float is sailing/fishing. If you are interested, email Paul. With the gardening expertise of Connie Nicholson, the lawn area in front of the new addition, between the building and the curved walkway will have a landscaping makeover. We heard encouraging news from Bob Kalicki regarding our monthly income vs. expenses. We are happy to say that St. Nicholas is starting to meet its expenses on a monthly basis due to the generous financial support of everyone in the congregation and the support groups. The Bishop's Committee, much aware of the financial situation of the parish can now begin to look at some structural issues that need to be addressed. The congregation will be kept informed of these issues that the Building Committee has started to prioritize. Bob Kalicki will become the financial secretary and Lynette Hamon will train to do the day-to-day business as the parish treasurer. -Steve Raftery Senior Warden |
Our New Parish Treasurer...Lynette Hamon. Welcome!
| With great joy and happiness, we are proud and so pleased to announce that our Lynette Hamon has graciously volunteered her time and skill and is taking over the role of Parish Treasurer.
Lynette brings her energy and drive to this ministry. We are most grateful to our Bob Kalicki who has ably and skillfully handled this position for the past few years.
Welcome aboard, Lynette. We wish you all the best in your efforts!
Special thanks, as well, to Erlene Lee-Forde and Jennifer Brundige, our bursars.

Shout-Outs |
To our young people who so lovingly and with such energy created and delivered the potted plants and gifts to all our beloved women of St. Nicholas on Mother's Day. What a joyful sound to hear those little feet move about so swiftly and all the while, bringing such happiness and joy.
To Val Gruenwald who, with such grace and dedication, coordinated the creation and the decoration of the plant holders which were made gifts on Mother's Day.
To Ginny Gibbs, sharing her skills and care and love created the seedling plants and decorative candles that were also distributed on Mother's Day

Readings & Lectors / Intercessors for This Weekend |
 May 18 & 19, 2013 - The Day of Pentecost
Saturday, May 18
All Readings: Cyndi DeBock
Sunday, May 19
First Reading: Hank Mandziara
Second Reading: Katie Black
Intercessions: LaWayne Williams
Chalice Bearers: Connie Nicholson & LaWayne Williams
Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
`In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' "
The Psalm
Psalm 104:25-35, 37 Page 736, BCP
25
O LORD, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
26
Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.
27
There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.
28
All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.
29
You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.
30
You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.
31
You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth.
32
May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; * may the LORD rejoice in all his works.
33
He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke.
34
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.
35
May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the LORD.
37b
Bless the LORD, O my soul, * Hallelujah!
Romans 8:14-17
All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-- if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
John 14:8-17 (25-27)
Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you." ["I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."]
