April 10, 2013

We are well into the Easter Season, raising our voices in a steady stream of Alleluia and Hosanna, singing the praises of Our Risen Lord. Spring, likewise, is refreshingly engaging our senses with crocuses and tulips that have victoriously sprung through the thick, dark soil, displaying their bright, festive colors as a sign of their triumph. All around us there are signs of new life. There is abundant life in this season of newness; this season of spring. In Jesus, the Resurrected One, the Messiah, there is abundant redemption (Copiosa Apud Eum Redemptio, Psalm 130) and abundant new life, secured for us, His sisters and brothers. Easter's joy and victory is God's gift to us, made real and permanent through Jesus the Christ.

With human life there is also the inevitable and eventual sting of human death. This sting has been felt by us all, as each of us has experienced the loss of a loved one, a friend, an acquaintance.   In time that sting fades and a sense of "normalcy" returns. For certain, the memories of loved ones who have passed on remain with us forever; keeps us company when lonely and warms our hearts with such comfort and peace.

The past week has been particularly painful, with the death of three people I knew and cherished. The Community of St. Nicholas as well as the Diocese of Chicago mourns the death of our sister in faith, Hope Smith. We grieve for her husband, Deacon Tom and their family, though we rejoice that Hope no longer suffers from human pain and now enjoys her eternal reward in Paradise. Also, Douglas' Aunt Gladys passed away after her courageous battle against cancer. What a remarkable women she was! Ever ready with a smile and old world charm that is so rare and so precious.   And my Aunt Mary passed after her lengthy fight and struggles with brain cancer. So many wonderful memories of my aunt...I'll hold them close to my heart where they will provide me solace and smiles until God calls me home, too.

Life is precious. It is my hope and my prayer that we all, each and every one of us takes time, every day, to enjoy and savor the many blessings with which God has gifted us. Consider, please, and gaze upon the first signs of colors pushing their way up in our gardens and consider the new life they possess and the pleasures they provide us. Pray for those who know no peace and whose lives are marred with violence and bitterness. Hold close to our hearts those who have no one to pray for them; that we raise them up in our benediction and praise to God the Almighty One. And remember, always, those who have fallen asleep in Christ and now rest in His most loving, caring and warm-embracing arms.

Diocesan Convention to Reconvene June 8
June 8 meeting will consider reunification with the Diocese of Quincy.

The 175th Convention of the Diocese of Chicago will reconvene on June 8 at St. James Cathedral for the purpose of considering the proposed reunification with the Episcopal Diocese of Quincy.

In November 2012, the 175th Convention unanimously passed Resolution A-175 affirming the Diocese of Chicago's intent to pursue reunification with Quincy and directing the bishop, with the advice and consent of the Standing Committee, to seek approval of the Quincy Reunion Agreement. At its conclusion, the convention was recessed rather than adjourned so that it could be called back into session to consider a final reunification agreement.

In May, members of the diocese are invited to attend one of four information sessions to learn more about the proposed reunification of the two dioceses, which were split to accommodate growth in 1877. Since 2008, the Episcopal Diocese of Quincy, based in Peoria, has been forging a new identity and mission after its bishop and about 60% of its members broke away to become founders of the conservative Anglican Church of North America.

Information sessions will be held at locations to be announced from 6:30-8:30 pm on May 9, 15, 20 and 29.
