Look up in Lent...
I have already shared a few stories about my Ash Wednesday morning at the Cary Metra Station. All in all, it was a beautiful day. It must have been a rather slow news day, because yours truly made the front page of the Daily Herald. I wouldn't mention this except it's not too often an Episcopal clergy person shares the same news column as the Pope himself!
In spite of the bitter cold, truly, the Spirit comforted me, while the willingness and openness of the commuters only reinforced the importance of my being there that day. People wanted...people needed...people were expecting. That thaws out the coldest of colds and warmed me through and through.
Of course, not everyone was so receptive. What I noticed was that as people came across the tracks and they saw me in my white alb, purple chasuble and hood, many, though not all, looked down at their feet, some focused their gaze on something else while others eagerly sipped from their coffee mugs in order to avoid direct eye contact with me. I guess it is akin to when we were in school and the teacher asked if anyone knew the answer to the question posed. Collectively, the class all looked down at their books in the hopes they would not be called upon. Bring back any memories?
I can appreciate and understand the reservation and hesitation that some commuters demonstrated. Religion, specifically spirituality and beliefs, are very personal matters. For some, wearing one's faith on their sleeve is not a comforting proposition. There still exists an attitude that expressions of faith are best exercised in a place of worship. Not everyone is comfortable expressing their faith openly and in public. Ash Wednesday certainly allows us the opportunity to show what we believe as we wear ashes on our forehead for all to see.
As I was standing out on that train platform, what I wanted to say to those whose eyes drifted downwards was, 'hey, look up, and see what I have for you.' On a more practical note, it's always a good idea we look up when we're walking, so we see what's ahead; we focus on what is before us.
Lent is a very good time for all of us to 'look up.' We all need to better focus on what is ahead of us, where it is we are going on our spiritual journey. For us Christians, we look forward to Easter, the great, high paschal feast. However, in order to get to Easter, we are afforded these six wonderful weeks of anticipation and preparation. To get to the wheat, we must first go through the chaff. To smell a rose, we maneuver about the thorns. For us to fully and truly glory in the promise of Paradise, we live our human lives as best we can, with Jesus serving as our inspiration and guide.
Speaking of "Looking up," I invite all to look at the changes in the Gathering Space: the Giving Tree has been moved closer to Holy Innocents Hall and is now front and center the first thing seen when entering into the building. New slips have been hung upon the tree, stating some of the material items needed at church. (Remember to include receipts of purchases for the parish so we can add to your contribution statement). The Welcoming Table has moved slightly to the left, closer to the middle of the space. The bulletin boards are now fully exposed and much easier to approach and read. And while we are there reading, consider signing up to share in one of the ministries of the church...baking bread that is used at our weekend Liturgies, brewing the coffee and setting up the cakes and cookies shared after our Sunday Liturgy, or pitching in to help clean the church.
"Look up" and see what is before us...a pathway laid by our God for us to travel, bringing us closer to our Lord and Savior. And let's look up together as we journey together.

St. Nicholas Flower Fund
| We have entered the holy season of Lent. We wish all a blessed journey these next six weeks. May each day fill us with peace and grace. Before too long, we will gather to celebrate the great Paschal feast of Easter. In order for our worship space to truly be at its most beautiful, we wish to festoon our church with seasonal flowers. If you would like to donate to the Flower Fund, now is the time to do so. Honor a dearly departed loved one, celebrate and give thanks for good tidings that have come to you. If you so choose to contribute, please make sure to indicate on your check "flower fund," and don't forget to provide names of dearly departed loved ones and/or events or occasions you wish to commemorate. In advance...a most heart-felt thank you to one and all.

"Continuing a Conversation," Sunday, February 24, 2013 after the 10 am Liturgy with a Light Lunch
|
"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God."
-Philippians 1:9-11
Sunday, February 24 - Continuing a Conversation
Where is St. Nicholas going? What will our community be like in three years? Will we be a few steps closer to realizing our vision? If we do not change anything, will the future be any different than the past?
Creating a strategic plan is an important step in the future of our community. We want to encourage everyone to contribute their thoughts. Please join us on Sunday, February 24 after the 10 AM service as we renew our journey of discernment. We will outline our approach for making a three to five year plan and discuss the ways in which all can participate
Renewing our Ministry - A Plan for St. Nicholas
Nearly two years ago, as the community of St. Nicholas conducted its search for a new permanent Vicar, (Manny) we conducted small group discussions and completed a Church Assessment Tool (CAT) Survey. These discussions became "the beginning of a conversation" concerning our mission, our gifts and our needs as a congregation in ways which helped us to identify and confirm Manny as our permanent Vicar.
Continuing the Conversation
We have been well blessed in these two years. Manny's installation as Vicar was a gift to all of us; we have been joined by our new members from the congregation of St. Bede's; and joined by others who have found their way here along independent paths, and have found our community to be a welcoming and meaningful presence in their lives.
Enriched by Manny's leadership and new energy, The Bishops Committee has determined that this is an appropriate time to "continue the conversation," to embrace the collective needs and gifts of our new members and, along with Manny's gifts and leadership, build a vision to renew and fulfill our mission as a congregation of faith in this community.
Making a Plan Begins with Listening
The process of planning sounds daunting to many but it needn't be. There is great consort among many of us at St. Nicholas on what we do well, and where we would like to grow in our ministry to each other and the community in which we live. As one member of the committee said recently, "much of what we need to do is simply to write down what we already know." That is true! Yet with new voices and new leadership, this is also an important time to actively listen- to strive to discern and embrace the gifts and needs of our community today, and to envision where our energies and our faith may lead us.

Book of Common Prayer (BCP) Resources | Worship in the Episcopal Church is taken from our Book of Common Prayer, among other sources. As you've probably noticed, during Lent, we're using the actual Book of Common Prayer in addition to service bulletins during our worship in order to familiarize ourselves with this book, so central to our identity as Episcopalians.
This week, we thought we'd share some resources about the BCP.
You can download a free PDF of the BCP at this link.
A free online BCP is at this link.
If you are interested in purchasing your own copy of the BCP, Amazon sells it at this link.
There is also a Kindle edition at this link.
A note about the lectionary: The Episcopal Church adopted the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) as its official lectionary at General Convention 2006, effective the First Sunday in Advent 2007 (with a provision for continued use of the BCP lectionary until the First Sunday in Advent 2010). We mention this because BCPs printed before this change became official do not contain the RCL version of the lectionary. To complicate matters a bit more, the Episcopal Church modified the RCL slightly to conform to Episcopal worship needs. You can find a PDF of the Episcopal version of the RCL lectionary, formatted to fit into the BCP, at this link. An online version is at this link.
Our Bishop, Jeffrey Lee, wrote a book entitled Opening the Prayer Book as part of the Church's Teaching Series. The book is a great resource to learn more about the history of the BCP. You'll find Bishop Lee's book at this link, and a Kindle version at this link.
