Welcome to Lent. We knew it was coming. Lent quietly comes upon us on a Wednesday and stays with us for the following six weeks. This year, Lent dawns rather early in the mid-winter season, which coincides with the seasonal changes, the sun, moon and stars that directly influence this Church season and when we celebrate the great feast of Easter. We prepare for it in our own personal ways. We prepare for Lent as a community of faith; with appropriate Lessons, hymns, music and additional prayers that will be new to our weekend Liturgies.
To help celebrate Lent, communally, we will continue to celebrate the Liturgy and on occasion, Evening Prayer, on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. We will delve into our Anglican/Episcopal history and utilize Rite I at these Lenten Wednesday evening services. Also, on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m., we invite any and all to come and pray the Stations of the Cross . . . the biblically-rooted journey which Jesus undertook, through the streets of Jerusalem to Golgotha, "the place of the skull," where Jesus was crucified and died. Come, pray and journey into a deeper, more personal faith and the dwell in the gifts of the Spirit.
Lent is a gift. Lent is an opportunity for us to enter, deeper and more intimately, into ourselves and in our relationship with Jesus the Redeemer.
Personally, Lent is my favorite season of the Church year. The deep history, the traditions and spiritual offerings . . . it is a six-week holiday of faith and spiritual awakenings. I wish to share this gift of Lent with all who wish to journey and find Jesus more intimately. It is my hope we share Lent as loving and caring members of St. Nicholas, one to another. Let's delve deeper into our faith. Let's delve deeper into the life of the Lord. Let's traverse this journey in our own style and fashion; both as individuals and as a family, rooted and grounded in faith and hope and love.
- February 13, Ash Wednesday Liturgy. We will gather at the church at 7 pm and begin the holy season of Lent. Ashes will be distributed as we will worship in song and prayer the Liturgy for this special day.
- "Continuing a Conversation." February 24. After the 10:00 a.m. liturgy, we are inviting the community to gather and discuss how we can better build and strengthen St. Nicholas Church. A light luncheon will be provided.

Worship and the Use of Our Book of Common Prayer
| As you may have noticed, during our weekend liturgies, more and more we are praying directly from our Book of Common Prayer. In an effort to better acquaint ourselves with our Anglican and Episcopal heritage and traditions, we hope that the usage of this wonderful and deeply rich book will enhance and strengthen our worship and help us all gain a more intimate and personal knowledge of our liturgy. Your feedback is appreciated and welcomed.

Pancake Supper a Huge Success | Yet another gift our new family members from the former St. Bede's have given to us: a fantastic new tradition - Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Holy Innocents Hall was filled with laughter and conversation, not to mention the aroma of bacon and pancakes. And (BONUS!), it turns out the chefs even took a request from an unnamed congregant asking for a Mickey Mouse shaped pancake!

"Continuing a Conversation," Sunday, February 24, 2013 after the 10 am Liturgy with a Light Lunch
|
"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God."
-Philippians 1:9-11
Sunday, February 24 - Continuing a Conversation
Where is St. Nicholas going? What will our community be like in three years? Will we be a few steps closer to realizing our vision? If we do not change anything, will the future be any different than the past?
Creating a strategic plan is an important step in the future of our community. We want to encourage everyone to contribute their thoughts. Please join us on Sunday, February 24 after the 10 AM service as we renew our journey of discernment. We will outline our approach for making a three to five year plan and discuss the ways in which all can participate
Renewing our Ministry - A Plan for St. Nicholas
Nearly two years ago, as the community of St. Nicholas conducted its search for a new permanent Vicar, (Manny) we conducted small group discussions and completed a Church Assessment Tool (CAT) Survey. These discussions became "the beginning of a conversation" concerning our mission, our gifts and our needs as a congregation in ways which helped us to identify and confirm Manny as our permanent Vicar.
Continuing the Conversation
We have been well blessed in these two years. Manny's installation as Vicar was a gift to all of us; we have been joined by our new members from the congregation of St. Bede's; and joined by others who have found their way here along independent paths, and have found our community to be a welcoming and meaningful presence in their lives.
Enriched by Manny's leadership and new energy, The Bishops Committee has determined that this is an appropriate time to "continue the conversation," to embrace the collective needs and gifts of our new members and, along with Manny's gifts and leadership, build a vision to renew and fulfill our mission as a congregation of faith in this community.
Making a Plan Begins with Listening
The process of planning sounds daunting to many but it needn't be. There is great consort among many of us at St. Nicholas on what we do well, and where we would like to grow in our ministry to each other and the community in which we live. As one member of the committee said recently, "much of what we need to do is simply to write down what we already know." That is true! Yet with new voices and new leadership, this is also an important time to actively listen- to strive to discern and embrace the gifts and needs of our community today, and to envision where our energies and our faith may lead us.
