We have ventured from the first week of Advent and now, we embark on this, the second week. We are filled with a sense of hope; because soon, very soon, we remember with joy and happiness the birth of the King of kings; the Lord of lords and our Savior and Redeemer.
Hope takes on many forms. Hope comes to us in the curious and precocious smile of a child that looks up to us and seeks our wisdom and guidance. Hope comes to us in the gaze of an elderly loved one who needs our steady and sure hand to guide them to safety and surety. Hope comes to us in the stranger seeking direction. Hope comes to us in the visitor to our church doors seeking a place where they can celebrate faith and hope without judgment or question, without hiding their identity; without concealing the beauty of just who they are and how God lovingly created them.
Hope is, as my favorite American poet Emily Dickinson once wrote, "...that thing with feathers." Feathers, indeed! But, not limited to--nor exempt from--blood, tears, strength, fear, anticipation, unbridled love, unfettered energy, sweat equity and elbow grease. Hope is what builds a church and hope is what keeps that house of faith alive and growing.
Let's all continue our Advent journey donned with our vestments of "hopeful blue" that will carry us onwards and ever forward. There is much that awaits us and with hope, with ample assistance from "faith" will ever and always lead us to that Promised Land.

A few reminders:
- We are pleased to welcome back Rodriguez Dance Theatre to St. Nicholas on December 9 at the 10AM service. Details below.
- Varied Voices Weekend, when different voices in our community offer a gift of preaching, is each 3rd weekend of the month. Penny Mandziara will preach the third weekend in December.
- Children's / Youth formation program takes place on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month.
- Healing Weekend, when the Revs Fran & Tony Begonja offer the gift of their healing ministry, is the 3rd weekend of each month.
- Children's Liturgy and Celebration Weekend happens the 1st Sunday / weekend of each month. NOTE: This month, because of the Bishop's Visitation, we'll celebrate both on the 2nd weekend.
- Book Discussion Group - next month's book is Moloka'i, by Alan Brennert. The group will meet on January 19, 2013 at 9:30am at Panera's on Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Steve Gruenwald.

Christmas Greetings to Eddie
|  The holiday season can be a very lonely time for many of us. What a blessing it would be if we took a moment and shared our spirit and holiday happiness with some one who could well use these very gifts.
I ask, as you are writing your Christmas cards this week, please take a moment and write a greeting to a friend in need...Eddie. As I mentioned last week, Eddie is currently serving time at Dixon State Prison. He does not get many visitors. In fact, I was the first "new person" he had met in close to 20 years.
Please, consider writing out a Christmas card for Eddie and share a simple message of peace and hope. Do not seal the envelop: I will put all the cards into one large envelop and mail it that way. These are prison rules that are strictly enforced. Simply return the cards to me this coming Saturday and/or Sunday, Dec. 8th and 9th and I will make sure to mail the cards out on Monday morning, Dec. 10th.
In advance, thank you, to my loving sisters and brothers, this wonderful Community of St. Nicholas. Our love and concern will go a very, long way.

The Deacons' Project 2012-2013
|  THE DEACONS' PROJECT 2012-2013 As has become traditional, at the Annual Convention of the Diocese of Chicago, the Bishop announced the outreach task selected by the Deacons of the Diocese for the twelve months beginning with the date of the convention. This year's project is called Keeping Our Children Safe and focuses on stemming (and hopefully eradicating) the epidemic scourge of violence particularly among young people within the boundaries of our diocese. To start to accomplish this, the deacons are seeking donations of funds via the purchase of "gift cards" which indicate a gift has been made in an individual's name. These gift cards list four suggested charities that have been identified as organizations focused on prevention and aftermath of violence against children. The organizations are: By the Hand (An after-school program emphasizing academics and nurturing mind, body, and soul), CROSSwalk (A program rooted in the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago engaging people of faith of several faith communities in addressing the escalating violence within the boundaries of the diocese), The Sheila A Doyle Foundation (An organization providing support and assistance to children aged 7-17 who have lost a member of their family to homicide), Youth Guidance (Supporting BECOMING A MAN and WORKING ON WOMENHOOD both of which are programs within Episcopal Charities). Additionally, a local program whose primary emphasis is reducing violence particularly among teen-agers may be selected. The gift cards sell for $10 each. Of course one may choose to contribute more. The payments are to be made to the individual's parish and should designate which beneficiary(ies) are to be credited. This way the contribution will be credited the individual's giving (pledge) statement as"Deacon's Challenge". In conjunction with our treasurer, Retired Deacon Tom Smith will have responsibility for the proper accounting for and the transmission of the funds for our parish. |
Prayer Requests |
The daughter of a friend of our Ellen Whalen is to have open heart surgery on Dec. 14, 2012: pray all goes well and she recovers fully and completely.
Bishop James Allan, our Nancy Allan's relation: he has taken a turn for the worse and his health is in rapid decline; pray for his peace and comfort and strength and acceptance for his family. Shirley Martinez, a friend of our Scott Cummings: she is battling cancer; pray for her health and well being. Vivian, sister to our Thelma Malacek, who is battling ovarian cancer: for successful surgery and a full and complete recovery. Also, Vivian's friend, Peggy, who has been diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer: for strength and peace for Peggy and family. Linda Buzard, choral director of St. John the Divine in Urbana and a friend of Bob DeHaven, is battling breast cancer: pray for full recovery and sound health. Richard Nordberg, Penny Mandziara's father who is in hospice: for his health, well being and God's mercy be with Richard. Bernie, the youngest son of our Eunice Dohra has finally returned home! Yet, his condition remains serious.
Peter Barlow, son of Bill and Kathy Barlow: for his safety and the safety of all our military men and women overseas. Marcia Kizior, sister of Bob DeHaven, who is in poor health. Pamela Joy DeHaven, in thanksgiving for recovery and continued remission. Hope Smith, whose cancer has reappeared: for strength, peace and guidance.
