Perhaps the World Ends Here By Joy Harjo
The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live.
The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the table. So it has been since creation, and it will go on.
We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe at the corners. They scrape their knees under it.
It is here that children are given instructions on what it means to be human. We make men at it, we make women.
At this table we gossip, recall enemies and the ghosts of lovers.
Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children. They laugh with us at our poor falling-down selves and as we put ourselves back together once again at the table.
This table has been a house in the rain, an umbrella in the sun.
Wars have begun and ended at this table. It is a place to hide in the shadow of terror. A place to celebrate the terrible victory.
We have given birth on this table and have prepared our parents for burial here.
At this table we sing with joy, with sorrow. We pray of suffering and remorse. We give thanks.
Perhaps the world will end at the kitchen table, while we are laughing and crying, eating of the last sweet bite.
"Perhaps the World Ends Here," from The Woman Who Fell From the Sky, by Joy Harjo 1994
What a gift it is to be invited and share in the meal at the Table of Life and receive the full and living presence of Jesus, our Most Holy Redeemer. We are graced and blessed with life that is divine. Our hearts and souls take flight and we are lifted up. Each time we come forward, extend our hands and say "Amen," we profess our belief in the gift afforded us; Jesus Christ. Let us rejoice and be glad in what we are given. We have much for which to be grateful.
To the community of St. Nicholas, to all our family and friends, a most joyful and blessed Thanksgiving. May God bless and keep us safe, secure and ever in His grace, care and love.

Recap of Diocesan Convention
|
|
Tobyn Leigh and members of the Diocese of Quincy express their gratitude as we take another step in moving forward.
|
Here are some highlights of the 175th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Chicago which took place on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17.
- St. Nicholas was represented by Pat Kalicki and Jessica Tamaski.
- The collection at the convention Eucharist raised $10,250. That money is earmarked for CROSSwalk. More info. about CROSSwalk is at this link.
- The resolution to continue conversations about reunification with the Diocese of Quincy passed on a unanimous voice vote. More info. about the reunification is at this link.
- Convention passed a resolution making Diocesan Council a more legislative, less program-executing body. The change represented by the resolution reflects existing reality.
- Legislation reducing the size of the chapter of St. James Cathedral passed.
- An amended resolution calling for a creation of a diocesan Wellness Program in 2013, and all clergy and lay employees to contribute 2% of their salary toward their health insurance premiums passed. The 2% contribution would either be reduced or eliminated if an employee opts into the Wellness Program. Details will be worked out in 2013.
- Our assisting bishop, Christopher Epting, who will be with us on December 2 for our Episcopal Visitation, gave a wonderful address to Convention. Click here to read it.
- The convention resolved to ask the diocese to support passage of Ill. HB 5831, gun registration legislation. More info. at this link.

Coffee Help Needed!
|
Maybe your ministry/talent is making coffee!? We have started a rotation of congregants to make the coffee for the Sunday coffee hour, set up, and clean up after. It is very easy - be at St. Nicholas between 9 and 9:30 am, make coffee, set out the cups, etc., set out the snacks provided by Jarosch, and then clean up after the coffee hour. The sign-up sheet in Holy Innocents Hall gives the option of one person/team setting up and another cleaning up.
If you are willing to help with this ministry, please sign up on Sunday. Thank you!
Special thanks to all those who already signed up last Sunday!

Stewardship - Annual Pledge Drive 2013

Holiday Flower Fund
| We have turned the calendar to November. Before you know it, we enter the season of Advent and yes, Christmas is here. In order to celebrate the holiday with full cheer, we wish to make sure the church is decorated with seasonal flowers and greenery. Please consider donating to our Flower Fund. With your donation, we will purchase poinsettias, ivy and greenery which will accentuate our worship space with holiday color and beauty. Your donation can be in memory of a dearly departed loved one. We will honor their memory with prayers and appropriate name markers in the plants. Checks may be made out to St. Nicholas with Flower Fund in the memo line and/or cash donations made in an envelope marked, "Flower Fund." Please enclose a notation listing who the details, e.g., "Given by Mary & John Smith in memory of Jane Smith." Any remaining funds will go toward the purchase of Easter flowers. In advance, thank you to the good people of St. Nicholas for your continued support, generosity and love.
