A Reflection on Stewardship
Hank Mandziara
Stewardship has been a blessing in my life, in the lives of those in my family, and in our new family at St. Nicholas, for God is the "steward" of our lives! He has blessed us with the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and through Him, has shown us the Way to eternal life! He has given to each of us His Holy Spirit, unconditionally, who is our constant companion and friend. He has molded all of us into the persons, we are, today, and continues to fill us with the abundance of his love in order to help us grow and mature into His disciples. He utilizes us to help those, whose needs are to be fulfilled by our actions and emotions in our congregational family and those we encounter in our world outside of St. Nicholas, on a daily basis or those we encounter for a brief moment. Stewardship is about how we care for everyone and everything, which God has given to us. It is about how we care for ourselves, our families, our employment and the people with whom we strive to make our world a more loving and inclusive place, our homes, our communities, and our environment. It is about how we use our preciously short time on our beautiful planet, our talents which have been given to us by God and refined by the Holy Spirit, and our resources which have been a blessing throughout our lives. Stewardship is about how we live our lives in response to God's love for us and how we touch the lives of those who we encounter through God's love. Stewardship is our response in gratitude for what has been bestowed upon us. It is our balanced, fair, intentional, and planned giving of our talent, time, and treasure. Stewardship asks us to help each other recognize the gifts and talents with which God has blessed each of us and the ways in which we have been blessed through the gifts and talents of others. It invites us to help discern, acknowledge, and continually encourage one another to use the gifts and talents which God has blessed us according to God's will. Stewardship challenges us to share our talent, time, and treasure beyond what we believe we can do, so we can grow, individually and corporately, as God desires. Stewardship is about how we care for and support the congregation, the ministry, the mission, and the organization of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church. We are a diverse people of interfaith families, people of color, gay women and men, people in recovery, young and old. We are extremely blessed by the ministries of our clergy and lay people. "We seek to care for all, especially the young and the vulnerable; to feed those who hunger physically or spiritually; to be a healing presence to those in physical, emotional, or spiritual pain." We are fortunate that the structure in which we worship our God and celebrate our lives is the home where we gather as a family of His disciples. Stewardship is our responsibility as a disciple of Jesus Christ. All of us need to prayerfully involve ourselves in the life of our congregation to sustain the experiential love of God through each other and to grow our resources in order to touch the lives of those we are yet to meet and embrace. Everyone has been blessed to know our God, as a member of the Body of Christ at St. Nicholas. Pledging is one important contribution to the financial planning, growth, and vision of our church and our commitment to its future. |

Our Children's Program |
Our children's program kicked off the new season and new curriculum - WorkshopCycles - on Sunday, October 7. The kids could not have been more delightful as they pondered what Jesus might have been like when he was a child, like them. We read and discussed the story about the time Jesus remained behind to talk with the elders in the temple - frightening his poor parents as they searched high and low for Him. Then, the kids sanded, painted, and decorated wooden "treasure chests," getting a modern-day sample of carpentry skills Jesus learned as a young apprentice to Joseph. One of the things I like best about the WorskshopCycles curriculum is that each lesson has a hands-on component to help children experience the concept or story in a way that brings it to life for them. The hands-on component means that, more than ever, we will welcome any extra guiding hands! We moved the children's program from during the liturgy to during the coffee hour for two main reasons: First, we want to continue finding meaningful ways for the children to be involved in the main liturgy. Second, we want parents and others to have the opportunity to share in the children's journey to deeper faith and understanding. Experiencing the activities together creates opportunities to continue the dialog long after clean-up. Most months, we plan to have the children's program on the first and third Sunday of the month, for 30-45 minutes after the 10:00 liturgy. This month, however, I have a conflict on the third Sunday, so we will meet on the 4th Sunday - October 28 - instead. By the way, I plan to have a "naming contest" for our children's program. So, talk with the children in your life, put on your creative thinking caps, and help us find a lively, inviting title. As always, thank you for the warmth and support you show all the treasured youngsters of St. Nick. -Val Gruenwald

Outreach Committee
| Our Outreach Committee is celebrating its First Birthday. We have experienced great progress and success in advancing the name and ministries of St. Nicholas. We have opened our facility to the entire Village and our name and presence has been received quite well. There is still more work to do and we need your help. If you have a desire to help and assist in this ministry, we could certainly use your help. We have a wonderful, core group of dedicated parish members...but there is room for more. We are only as successful as the desire and faith be place in each other and in our community of faith. Please see Bob DeHaven and/or Manny about becoming a member of this committee.

Bishop's Committee News |

The Bishop's Committee met Sunday, October 14 and discussed the following:
- Convention 2012 - Jessica Tamaski and Pat Kalicki were elected as lay delegates and Cyndi DeBock and Christy McCreary were elected as alternate delegates.
- Bob DeHaven reported that the Outreach Team had been searching for options to develop a more appropriate and expressive Graphic Identity for St. Nicholas Church. Bob has had some discussions with Daniel Kantor, author of Graphic Design and Religion, to determine if he is the appropriate person for this task. The Bishop's Committee approved Bob continuing these discussions with the initial goal of determining whether Daniel can create a proposal for a graphic design for St. Nicholas within the framework of what is feasible for St. Nicholas.
- Pat shared information about a scrip program for fundraising. This was done in the past at St. Nicholas, and the "pitfalls" were discussed. Pat will look into the scrip program as a possible time-limited fundraiser prior to the Christmas holidays next year.
- Manny reported on the Mission Congregation Meeting he attended in Rockford recently. Manny asked that print materials be sent to him pertaining to the new program called Thrive so he can share it with the Bishop's Committee and the congregation for consideration.
- Manny also reported he has spoken with Bishop Epting, who will be presiding at St. Nicholas on December 2, when approximately 12 individuals/families will be received into the Episcopal Church and/or confirmed.
- It was reported that expensive water pump repairs had to be made to the boiler last week.
- Manny delivered some of the nicer items left from the rummage sale to an auction house, which gave us $155 for the items.
- The financials presented by Bob Kalicki were received. We continue to close the gap between revenue and expenses, with very careful monitoring of expenses and the increased income from our growing congregation.

Please distribute the catalogs and order forms to family, friends, and work mates. The sale runs through November 11. Orders are to be returned to St. Nicholas by November 11. Orders will be delivered to your home the week of December 3. If you have any questions, please call Pat Kalicki at 847-882-3364 or email pat@stnicholasepiscopal.org.
