IWL Consortium Launches New Initiative on Women and Health
The Institute for Women's Leadership (IWL) Consortium is launching a new Initiative on Women and Health. This unprecedented endeavor recognizes that women's health around the world is shaped as much by social, cultural, economic, political and environmental forces as by biology. By bringing together various disciplines including the humanities and social sciences, along with the biological sciences and medical fields, IWL hopes to develop a research, teaching and service agenda which tackles topics in women and health from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective

New RFP for Rutgers Faculty Supports Women and Health Collaborations
As part of the new Initiative on Women & Health, the IWL Consortium issued a Request for Proposals to provide modest financial support for teams of Rutgers faculty. Grants will be made to develop new, interdisciplinary courses, as well as new collaborative research activities, public programs, cultural events, innovative workshops and special conferences. Proposals are due to IWL April 1, 2013, and will be considered based on clarity of focus on interdisciplinary approaches to women and health. This RFP and vital aspects of the Women & Health Initiative are made possible by support from the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. Click here for the RFP full description and application forms. |

Featuring Dr. Francis Barchi February 28 at Camden
On Thursday, February 28, Dr. Francis Barchi, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, and IWL Senior Fellow for Women and Health, will speak at Rutgers-Camden about "Women's Health and Well-Being: A Global Perspective." Dr. Barchi's research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women's health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first major quantitative study on women's autonomy and gender-based violence in northern Botswana, the findings from which identified strong associations between alcohol, violence, and poor health outcomes. This February 28 event is sponsored by the Camden Women Studies Program and an RUFair Grant from the Office of Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics. The lecture is at 4:00 p.m. at the Camden Campus Center Multi Purpose Room.

Gender and Health Faculty Research Workshops Highlight Rutgers Expertise
The IWL Consortium Initiative on Women & Health features the Rutgers Gender and Health Faculty Research Workshops Series to involve Rutgers faculty who share their current research relevant to women's health access, disparities, history and current status. Organized by Dr. Johanna Schoen, associate professor of history and affiliate of the Rutgers Institute for Health, the Faculty Research Workshops provide an important opportunity for faculty and students to learn about the many ways scholars are examining women's health from interdisciplinary perspectives.
The next Gender and Health Faculty Workshop will be held on Wednesday, February 27. The topics include: "My bifurcated life: academic history and public history" presented by Janet Golden, Professor of History, Rutgers Camden, and "The Medical Portrait in 19th century Anglo-American Photography" presented by Susan Sidlauskas, Professor of Art History, Rutgers-New Brunswick.
