Welcome to New IWL Fellows

Dr. Francis Barchi
It's official! In January, Dr. Francis Barchi began her appointment both as an assistant professor in the School of Social Work and as IWL Senior Fellow for Women and Health. As the wife of Rutgers University President Bob Barchi, Dr. Barchi has been fully engaged throughout the fall semester in learning about the university, meeting faculty, staff and students, and sparking excitement about Rutgers' future.   We are delighted to welcome her as she begins her "other" Rutgers roles as faculty member and IWL Senior Fellow. Here at IWL, she is helping to develop a new initiative examining the social, economic, and environmental forces that shape women's health both locally, nationally and globally.

Dr. Barchi's personal research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women's health in southern Africa. Read more about her research here.

On February 28, Dr. Barchi will speak at Rutgers-Camden. Her talk, "Women's Health and Well-Being: A Global Imperative," is part of the launch of our new IWL Consortium Initiative on Women and Health.

Mahboubeh Abbasgholizabeh

IWL is pleased to welcome and host Mahboubeh Abbasgholizadeh, Rutgers University's first IIE Scholar Rescue Fund Fellow. Ms. Abbasgholizadeh is an Iranian women rights activist, video journalist, and filmmaker. Her research focuses on the fields of women's empowerment in Muslim contexts as well as small media and social networks. In addition, she is a prominent advocate for human rights in Iran, and has been active in the women's rights movement in Iran over the past 25 years. Ms. Abbasgholizadeh has been jailed several times by the Iranian government for her peaceful activism. She serves as a director of ZananTV (http://www.zanantv.org), an alternative online media space for women. She also has made several documentary films about Women's rights in Iran.

The Institute of International Education (IIE), an independent non-profit, is a world leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. IIE's Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) provides fellowships for established professors, researchers, and public intellectuals whose lives or careers are threatened in their home countries.

On February 26, Mahboubeh will join IWL director Alison Bernstein and Savi Bisnath, Associate Director, Center for Women's Global Leadership, in a public dialogue about her work. For event information, click here.

IWL Leadership Scholars Blog about Social Action

Shaneez Tyndall,

Leadership Scholar Class of 2013

"Growing up, I was constantly the only black girl in my classes. My parents always pushed me to work hard because as a woman, and a black woman at that, I would face many challenges. In a society where white men represented the standard, expectations for my success would be lower and I would have to work harder to prove myself every time. . . . As I grew older and continued to deal with these challenges, I began to wonder ..." Read how Shaneez addresses issues of representation in her Social Action Project called GET LOUD.

Katie Stump,

Leadership Scholar Class of 2013

"The opportunity to be a college student, far from my hometown, indulging in fascinating course material and exploring a multitude of clubs and activities as part of the Rutgers community left me feeling more grateful, more confused, and ultimately more ambitious than I would ever have imagined. It was in my initial conversations with peers in my dorm that I realized how different my journey to college had been and how large an impact our high school educations had already had on our social positions in the adult world. As I worked to transition in to the next phase of my life, I found myself constantly looking back over my shoulder at the world I was leaving in Millville, New Jersey. And I found myself deeply perturbed.... "Read more about Katie's perspectives on disparities in New Jersey high school education.
