Opening Reception

Gina Gilmour Exhibit & Grand Opening of Weathervane Gallery & Gift Shop

6:00 PM

At the Suffolk County Historical Society, Riverhead

For North Fork artist Gina Gilmour, "Art has always been a way...to process experience - to celebrate and to mourn, to rail against the intolerable, and to navigate the mysterious." A native of North Carolina and a transplant to the East End from Manhattan, Gina Gilmour first came to Long Island as an artist-in-residence with the William Steeple Davis Foundation in Orient. She fell in love with the North Fork and has transformed an old motel in Mattituck into her studio. The artist's paintings and sculptures are in many private and public collections, including the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, and the Weatherspoon Museum in Greensboro. On view at the Suffolk County Historical Society's new Weathervane Gallery & Gift Shop will be Gilmour's oil paintings from her The Duets series as well as small ceramic sculptures from her Embraces series that were created in response to 9/11 and show couples taking comfort in each other's embraces. Her dramatic painting The Tree Behind Us and the oceanscape Blue Tide, among other pieces, will also be on view. The exhibit will be on display June 28 - July 31, 2014. Gallery Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM. For more info: 631-727-2881 or www.suffolkcountyhistoricalsociety.org.

Sculpture Garden Featuring Kyle Pearce

At the Remsenburg Academy

The Remsenburg Academy is excited to introduce the Sculpture Garden at the Academy, courtesy of artist/sculptor Kyle Pearce. These whimsical and large metal animals and other creatures are forged from the hoods of old cars in Pearce's workshop in Tarpon Springs, Florida, where he lives on a sailboat on the Anclote River. Using a hammer, pliers and an acetylene torch Pearce, originally from Bethpage, reshapes car hoods into amazing and compelling new forms, which come to life as giraffes and cows, rhinos and mermaids. This is an art form practiced by Pearce for the last thirty years, and his vision is unique and fascinating. For viewing hours, visit http://remsenburgassociation.com/kyle-pearce-sculpture.html.
