East End Arts proudly presents the Long Island Opera as our Artist-In-Residence from October 2012 through February 2013. Each month will feature an "Opera Weekend," with programs, classes and workshops on a variety of opera-related topics.
MOVEMENT IN OPERA: Friday, November 9, 6-8PM A LIO artist will describe and demonstrate various techniques to warm up, relax, and prepare the body and the voice for optimal performance. Cost: $20 EEA members / $30 nonmembers ACTING IN OPERA: Saturday, November 10, 1-4 PM This workshop demonstrates acting and performance techniques -- from quiet emotion to stage combat -- that help the opera singer bring a character to life for the audience. The Recorder Orchestra of New York Concert: Recorder Rendezvous Jamesport Meeting House
BOTH CONCERTS ARE CANCELLED BUT
WILL BE RE-SCHEDULED IN THE SPRING - STAY TUNED! The Recorder Orchestra of New York brings you an afternoon of music! This talented group of 18 musicians (including four North Fork residents) will entertain you in surprising musical ways - from a Medieval dance tune to a 21st Century tango, and from Renaissance madrigals to Baroque works by Bach and Corelli, as well as the contemporary "Rhapsody for Bass Clarinet and Recorder Orchestra." The orchestra performs on recorders of many shapes and sizes (from six inches to six feet in length) producing a rich, sweet sound in this acoustically superb space. This program will also be presented in the Community Center at Peconic Landing, Greenport, NY on Saturday, November 3 at 4 PM. For more information or directions call: 631-734-7485. Window design installation will take place Nov. 29 - Dec. 1. Winners decided by public vote starting December 2 through December 20.

PROMOTE YOUR WORK Patch.com is offering an exciting FREE publicity opportunity for artists. The community news website has created a column called First Impressions - where an image of artwork is posted each week and readers respond by writing comments about what the work means to them. At the end of the week, the artist posts what they were thinking when they created the piece. Click on the title above to see the first installment featuring local photographer Meryl Spiegel's Scissored, from her Phantoms series. Patch is looking for artists to participate. All you need is a jpg of an image of your work (size: at least 72 dpi, at least 6 x 6 inches) and a paragraph describing what you were thinking when you created the artwork. CALL FOR WORK: FIBER EXHIBITION at the Carnegie Art Center Opening Reception is Thursday, November 29 and the exhibition will run from the opening on November 29 through Thursday, December 27, 2012. The judge for this exhibition is Jozef Bajus, Associate Professor of Design and Coordinator of the Fibers Program at Buffalo State College. CALL FOR ARTISTS: 10 x 10 Show at The South Street Gallery Stop by The South Street Gallery in Greenport and pick up a complimentary 10x10 cradled birch plywood board for our sixth annual 10x10=100 Art Show and Sale to benefit The North Fork Environmental Council. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Poetry Chapbook Competition The Center for Book Arts invites submissions to its annual Poetry Chapbook Competition. The deadline for the 2013 competition is December 1, 2012. The winning manuscript will be chosen in the spring of 2013 and will be awarded with the publication of a beautifully designed, letterpress-printed, limited-edition chapbook printed and bound by artists at the Center for Book Arts. The edition is limited to 100 signed and numbered copies, ten of which are reserved for the author and the remainder of which will be offered for sale through the Center. The winning poet will also receive a cash award of $500, and a $500 honorarium for a reading, to be held at the Center in the fall of 2013, as well as an exclusive opportunity to stay at the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, New York as one of their Winter Shakers.
