Be a good cyber citizen!

Remind your children that an Internet playground is still a playground and they need to play nicely. A good rule of thumb: If they wouldn't do something in real life, they shouldn't do it online. Find out how your children can report mean behavior or unkind content on their favorite sites and teach them how to do it.

Elk Grove High School FFA program holds annual
3rd Grade Agriculture Field Day

For two days, elementary school students from throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District had the chance to learn more about farming and agriculture at Elk Grove High School's Future Farmers of America (FFA) program's annual 3rd Grade Agriculture Field Day on September 25 and 26. This event was held at the Elk Grove High School Agri-Science Center.

The 3rd Grade Agriculture Field Day has been in existence for over 25 years and reinforces the 3rd grade curricular unit pertaining to California agriculture. During this two day event, over 1,200 third grade students, as well as their parents and teachers, from elementary schools from throughout the District will experience hands-on lessons, led by Elk Grove High School FFA students with expertise in their species area.

"For many of the elementary school students, this event gives them their first opportunity to see various parts of farm life up close and personal," said Mike Albiani, FFA advisor for Elk Grove High School. "Students will also have the chance to view colorful displays on agricultural commodities, interact with live animals and visit a greenhouse."

Cosumnes Oaks High School culinary arts students assist with California Hall of Fame inductee ceremony

On Wednesday, October 1, Culinary Arts Academy (CAA) students from Cosumnes Oaks High School (COHS) had the chance to assist caterers with serving guests at the official induction ceremony of the California Hall of Fame's Class of 2014.

In preparation for the event, CAA students brushed up on their serving skills, as well as knowledge of the night's honorees.

"Many of our students look to the inductees as their role models," said Kerri Hock, CAA instructor. "In order to participate in the event, students needed to answer questions about the inductees so they would know who they were serving. This event not only gave them black-tie experience, but it also served a dual purpose where students could be inspired by the achievements of the inductees."

The California Museum will be partnering with COHS CAA in the future and has added the academy to their preferred catering list for future events. The partnership and serving opportunity for the CAA students was made possible through Hock. Hock is a long-time friend of Lisa Ling, a board member for the California Museum and Brenna Hamilton, marketing director of the California Museum.

The 8th class of California Hall of Fame inductees includes: basketball superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; civil-rights heroine Charlotta Bass; literary icon Joan Didion; legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola; community organizer Fred Ross, Sr.; environmental scientist Stephen Schneider; and social-activism innovator Mimi Silbert.
