EGUSD reaches out to the multicultural community

Elk Grove Unified School District staff was out in the community last Saturday talking to parents and community members about the District.

Elk Grove Unified was at the City of Elk Grove's annual Multicultural Festival in Elk Grove Park. EGUSD distributed healthy snacks and participated in fun preschool games with children while at the festival. The festival featured a variety of ethnic foods, music, an art show, entertainment, fashion shows and activities for kids.

EGUSD also had representation at Feria de Educacion, an education fair designed to help Latino families navigate the California education system from K-12 through community college and the university level. The fair was held at California State University, Sacramento.

Liftoff to Elliott Ranch Elementary School's International Space Station Connection!

United States astronauts aboard the International Space Station will be beamed live into Elliott Ranch Elementary School on the morning of Wednesday, August 27, 2014, for a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) downlink. Elliott Ranch Elementary is one of two elementary schools in the nation to have been selected for the NASA downlink thus far this year.

Twelve students will have the opportunity to pose questions to the astronauts while the entire school will watch them demonstrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts in ways that are impossible on Earth.

This exciting event is just one of several components that the school has implemented with the support of their parent community to increase their focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) this year. The school has been building up to this event with a 3,2,1 Liftoff approach:

The astronauts will be using a 3D printer for the first time in microgravity.  This summer the Elliott Ranch community successfully raised over $2,500 to purchase the first 3D printer at an Elk Grove Unified elementary school.  The printer will give the students the opportunity to learn from the very technology being used in the space station.

NASA Downlink Competition Winners announced! Over the summer, students in Grades 1-6 have been working on projects related to the NASA Downlink session. Educators and scientists judged the projects, selecting the top 15 projects. The student winners will be the students who ask the astronauts the questions and their classes will be in the room with the live downlink. Can't think of a better prize!

Students got a sneak peek into life in space today when former astronaut Stephen Robinson spoke to students about his experiences, inspiring young people towards future careers in STEM!

Liftoff!

Students, staff and dignitaries will gather in the multipurpose room this Wednesday for the live feed from the International Space Station.

Stay tuned for more exciting STEM news this year from Elliott Ranch Elementary!

EGUSD teacher earns national recognition

Mike Jones, an Elk Grove Unified School District resource teacher, has been selected by U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein to receive the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute's (CCAI) Angels in Adoption award. He will be recognized at an awards ceremony in September in Washington, D.C.

Jones is being honored for his work in EGUSD and his own non-profit organization, Courageous Connection, which addresses foster youth needs. For the past seven years, Jones has been instrumental in creating and facilitating the foster youth advisory classes at several EGUSD high schools. These classes are designed to provide information and support to students in foster care. He began his focus on foster youth as a teacher at Laguna Creek High School, recruiting staff and administration to facilitate an advisory class for foster youth to support their academic needs. Jones has also enlisted the help of the community to begin Courageous Connection and support other foster youth needs, such as prom dresses and tickets, as well as bus stickers. Click here for more information about Courageous Connection.

CCAI's Angels in Adoption award honors individuals, couples and organizations that have made extraordinary contributions on behalf of children in need of families. Since the program's inception in 1999, nearly 2,000 Angels have received this honor. Past awardees hail from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. They also represent the wide spectrum of individuals involved in the adoption and foster care process. Click here for more information about CCAI's Angels in Adoption award.

Florin High School to hold 25th Anniversary Pre-Game Homecoming Celebration

Florin High School's Associated Student Body (ASB) will host the school's 25th Anniversary Pre-Game Celebration prior to homecoming. The celebration will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, September 5 at the Mark Macres Stadium located at Monterey Trail High School. All celebration activities are free with a paid admission to the game.

Florin High School opened in fall 1989. Although Elk Grove Unified's third comprehensive high school is not located within the town of Florin, the school board chose the name in honor of the area's history. The arrangement of the school's buildings was patterned after the University of Virginia where its first principal and chief planner, Bill Huyett, attended. The partnership of east and west, as represented in the architecture, was a good symbol for the school's diverse population and its students of many ethnic origins and languages. Click here to view Florin High School's website.

The pre-game celebration kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with faculty, staff and class recognition, as well as free cupcakes from Cupcake Craving. Event attendees will be able to take pictures with Florin's panther mascots - "Flo" and "Rin," stop by a face painting station, purchase Florin High School gear and snap a few pictures at the selfie station.

Admission into the game is free for Florin High School students with ASB cards and EGUSD employees. Please direct all questions to Tiffany Vaughn at tvaughn@egusd.net or (916) 689-8600, x6077.

No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign returns for 9th year

No Excuses Logo

When students miss school, they must make up lessons and homework. Every hour of every school day counts in your child's education. Typically, for every day missed, it takes two days for a student to catch up. This places a burden on the student, the parent, the teacher and your students' classmates.

School attendance isn't just about an education - it's about learning the skills necessary to be a successful adult. Regular, consistent attendance and punctuality are skills necessary for being successful in the workplace as well as at school.

Attendance is also important for your child's school. All student absences reduce the State's funding to our school district. About half of school funding comes from the state and is based on "average daily attendance." The State of California pays the Elk Grove Unified for each day a student attends school. The district does not receive money when a student is absent - excused or not.

In order to raise awareness about attendance, the Elk Grove Unified School District offers a No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign. Now in its 9th year for the 2014-2015, the campaign is centered on the theme of "responsibility." Please help your student(s) understand that being in class means being a responsible person.

One way we get students talking about attendance is through our monthly attendance incentive prizes. Local businesses have donated prizes to be given away each month at every Elk Grove Unified school. Students must have perfect attendance for a month in order to eligible for a random drawing to receive the prize. The monthly incentive program is possible thanks to businesses such as: Chick-fil-A, Leatherby's, McDonald's, Office Depot, Raging Waters and Surf Xtreme.

Another popular way to increase attendance awareness is through our poster contests. This year, the revamped poster contest will allow elementary school students to draw what they like most about being at school. These will be turned into posters to be sent to elementary school sites. A new Twitter contest invites secondary students to create personal tweets about what they enjoy about school. The winning Tweets will be used for the attendance campaign in District communications and posters will be created to hang at secondary school sites.

But that's not all! To further raise awareness, grand prizes are offered too. At elementary schools, students can earn a chance each month for a drawing for a new bicycle and helmet at the end of the school year based on monthly perfect attendance. Graduating seniors have a chance to win $20,000 to use towards the purchase of a vehicle from any dealership at the Elk Grove Auto Mall through the Senior Attendance Drive. To be eligible, graduating seniors must have at least five months of perfect attendance and at least a 2.0 GPA.
