EGUSD's Superintendent Search Survey

The Elk Grove Unified School District's (EGUSD) Board of Education invites the community to participate in the process of selecting the next superintendent by taking an online survey. The survey can be found in English, Spanish, Green Hmong and White Hmong at http://www.egusd.net/news/spotlight/index.cfm.

The Board has launched a search to find the best superintendent to meet the needs of a diverse and growing district of over 62,000 students and 5,000 employees. EGUSD is the largest district in Northern California and the 5th largest in the state. In June, Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D., announced his retirement as of September 12, 2014. Ladd is the 5th superintendent in the District's 55 year history.

The information gathered will give guidance to the Board on the attributes that the community feels are important to consider in the next superintendent. In addition, the information provides an opportunity for the Board to receive valuable communication on the direction of the school district. Lastly, the comments, suggestions, and recommendations will be given to the newly selected superintendent as a reflection of EGUSD.

The Board has hired a professional search firm, McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, to assist in finding a new leader for our District. Representatives from the search firm led the community discussion and will analyze the survey results. For more information and updates, please visit the EGUSD website at www.egusd.net.

Fuel up for school with breakfast at Elk Grove Unified

breakfast

Did you know that according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), research suggests that eating a healthy breakfast is associated with improved cognitive function, reduced absenteeism and improved mood?

The Elk Grove Unified School District is doing their part to ensure students can be at their best when they begin classes for the day through the school breakfast program. The breakfast program is offered at all elementary, middle and high schools throughout the district.

In addition to the importance of breakfast, the concept of eating breakfast at school has proven to be beneficial as well. According to the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participation in school breakfast is associated with improved math grades, attendance and punctuality.

Elk Grove Unified's breakfast program begins a half hour before the first school bell.  The cost for elementary school students is $1.50 and $1.75 for secondary school students.  Families who qualify for free and reduced priced lunches also qualify for breakfast at no cost.

"Elk Grove Unified participates in the National School Lunch Program and our School Breakfast Program operates in the same manner as the lunch program," said Michelle Drake, EGUSD"s Director of Food and Nutrition Services. "Our school breakfasts meet standards set by the United States Department of Agricultural with a renewed focus on fresh fruit & vegetables and whole grain offerings. We believe in providing students an array of healthy selections to choose from."

Breakfast options for elementary and secondary students include fresh, whole grain muffins and bagels made daily in the district's full-scale bakery, a choice of fresh fruit, cereals, breakfast burritos, yogurt parfaits and breakfast sandwiches.

Parents also have the option of pre-paying for their student's meals by using MyLunchMoney.com. This service allows parents to view student purchases, set spending limits and has the ability to send an email to alert parents when an account balance is low.

Kinder Camps offer "jump start" for students

Over the summer, some very eager and exuberant soon-to-be kindergarteners had the chance to get into the groove of being a kindergarten student through Elk Grove Unified's Kinder Camp program.

The free program is part of the District's First 5 Sacramento grant requirement. The program allows children who did not previously attend preschool an opportunity to have a "jump start" to kindergarten. Each student received 60 hours of kinder camp preparation time before entering kindergarten.

"Often times, students come into kindergarten without any preschool experience and additional class time must be spent on the fundamentals of learning and school readiness skills," said Mikako Fisher, a program specialist in the PreK-6 education department. "Our goal is to make sure the students are able to comfortably walk into a kindergarten class on the first day of school and be able to hold a pencil, write their name, sit attentively and happily say goodbye to their parents."

Program components include a transition to kindergarten orientation for parents, parent and child introduction to the school site and administration, lessons directed at building language and literacy, mathematic foundations, social emotional development, physical health, following routines and classroom expectations. In addition, each student receives a transition to kindergarten packet.

Students who attended the kinder camp program received a healthy lunch each day. This year, kinder camp classes were offered at Herman Leimbach, Charles Mack and David Reese elementary schools.

"This is our second summer having kinder camps," Fisher said. "With each new year, we have been able to make improvements to meet the students' needs. This year, we added a summer reading incentive program and our pre and post assessment. We plan to continue to have the program for years to come and hope that the program continues to grow and progress."
