Regional education leaders form partnership to boost college and career success

On Thursday, September 4, public education leaders from the Elk Grove Unified School District, Sacramento State and Cosumnes River College met at Florin High School to formalize an agreement among their institutions to provide opportunities in career and technical education, and help students more easily transition to, and succeed in, college.

Elk Grove Unified School District Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez and Cosumnes River College President Deborah Travis formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish "Sacramento Regional Pathways to Success: An Elk Grove Partnership for College to Career." The new partnership will seek to increase retention and prepare students for college readiness or gain a career technical education that will allow students to pursue employment and enter the workforce.

"The collaboration among three of the largest academic institutions in Sacramento County represents a vital commitment to our students and community that will create a seamless pathway from preschool to college and careers," says Ladd. "This agreement encourages our talent pool to stay in our region, build businesses, accelerate innovation and become the leaders of tomorrow."

The partnership's goals include: engaging students, families, Elk Grove and Sacramento business and civic leaders, community organization leaders and education leaders in supporting the college-to-career effort; providing a rigorous education that prepares each child for college or job and career training; providing students and families a clear and understandable roadmap to college and career success; and partnering with students, parents and community stakeholders to provide opportunities in career and technical education, or to help students more easily transition to, and succeed in, college.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Survey

As the Elk Grove Unified School District enters its third year of implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), we are seeking your feedback and input on the communications and supports that we are providing families. We will use this information as part of our continuous efforts to improve the communication tools and resources that we provide.

Please take a few minutes of your time to complete the online survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/73QSB5C.

As a reminder, the Common Core State Standards are an updated set of academic standards that have been developed with the intention of unifying learning expectations for students across all states. Common Core State Standards bring strong advantages to students in California and in the United States. First, by unifying the expectations, assessments of educational quality and the federal funding that is based on such assessment will be more equitable. Second, students throughout the United States will be in a better position to compete with students throughout the world for university admission and for jobs in a global market. Finally, these standards define kindergarten through twelfth grade learning that will ensure that students are well prepared for post-secondary education and careers.

With the implementation of the CCSS, California will move from the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) assessment system to a new system in the 2014-2015 school year. This new system will be referred to as the California Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress (CalMAPP). Within this system, students will take assessments referred to as Smarter Balanced Assessments, which includes shifting from paper-and-pencil tests to computerized assessments starting in the 2014-2015 school year. The new assessments are designed to meet federal and state-level accountability requirements and provide teachers and parents with timely and accurate information to measure and trace individual student growth.

EGUSD will continue to share information about CCSS and the new testing system throughout the school year. For more information, please check out our Common Core State Standards website at

Elk Grove High School sophomore to compete at world roller skating championships in Spain

For Meranda Detlefsen, many years of hard work will soon pay off when she gets the opportunity to represent the United States at the 2014 World Roller Figure Skating Championships in Spain on September 29. The Elk Grove High School sophomore earned a slot on the World Class USA Roller Sports Junior Competition Team by placing second at the recent World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

Detlefsen has been roller skating for the past 10 years, nine of those competitively. During eight of those years, she has been with her current coach, Jim Pringle. Detlefsen has amassed an impressive record over this amount of time, winning about 70 contests and earning over 100 medals and trophies.

"What made me want to start skating was seeing all the girls in pretty skating dresses and all of the medals that they had won," Detlefsen said. "What keeps me skating is the challenge of performing harder routines as I get older."

In addition to competing, Detlefsen also enjoys coaching others. She was recently promoted to the position of coaches' assistant for Saturday morning classes at Kings Skate Country, as she loves helping younger kids learn how to skate. She also enjoys practicing, competing and traveling, as well as her skating club/family.

In the future, Detlefsen hopes to become a roller skating world champion and eventually a skating coach. She would also like to attend the University of California, Davis with the goal of becoming a pharmacist.

Detlefsen is currently holding fundraisers to help defray the cost of traveling to the international competition. A hot dog and ice cream fundraiser will be held on Saturday, September 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kings Skate County 10404 Franklin Blvd., Elk Grove 95758).  The cost is $8 per person and includes skates, skating, one hot dog and one bowl of ice cream.  Donations are also accepted in any amount at Kings Skate Country or by sending donations to the following address:

Motocross racer rides to the top at Ellen Feickert Elementary School

Parker Ross is no ordinary 4th grade student.

In addition to being a student at Ellen Feickert Elementary School, Ross also zips around at high speeds and flies fearlessly through the air in his spare time as a Motocross racer.

Ross started riding a motorcycle with training wheels as early as 20 months old. He quickly ditched the training wheels at two and a half years old and raced in his first motocross race a year later. Ross has now been racing for five and a half years. He picked up the desire to race from his older sister, Bailey who was already racing. They would often practice together.

"Parker really enjoys motocross racing," said Kelly Ross, Parker's mother. "He especially loves flying through the air and throwing whips. He looks up to famous motocross riders like Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Dungy and Ryan Villapoto. He would love to compete at the professional level one day."

At the young age of 8, Ross has amassed numerous race wins. He has won four series championships over the past two years and most recently won the 2014 Mammoth Motocross Championship. He also took 4th place in the 2014 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship in Hurricane Hills, Tennessee - the biggest amateur race in the country. Ross was the only racer in the top 10 from the West Coast.

Ross has started competing at the Amateur National Level and he plans to compete in as many national level competitions as possible in the coming years. Next up for Ross is the 12th Annual Dodge California Championship Pro-Am October 1-5 at the Hangtown track inside Prairie City OHV Park in Rancho Cordova.

Although Ross is wholeheartedly pursuing his dream of being a professional Motocross racer one day, his parents have still stressed the importance of education and family.

"At school, Parker would also like to make the Principal's List this year to improve upon making the honor roll for all three trimesters last year," Kelly Ross said. "Motocross as a career is a dream at this point. We are supportive of that dream and helping him realize it - if possible, but we are also trying to teach him that no matter how he progresses in this sport, a good education, good nutrition and a strong family bond are the keys to a successful life."
