3D Printer for Elliott Ranch Elementary

This August, Elliott Ranch Elementary students will have the unique opportunity to speak with NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station through a live video conference.  These astronauts will be using a 3D printer for the first time in microgravity and Elliott Ranch students would like the opportunity to test this new technology, right here in Elk Grove.  A 3D printer combined with a child's imagination - just imagine the possibilities.

3D printing is an emerging technology that has the potential to change the way we live.  For example: footwear companies are 3D printing custom shoes for athletes, paleontologists are 3D printing fossils and doctors are trying to 3D print organs, a development which may one day save lives.

The Elliott Ranch community is hoping to raise fund to purchase this new amazing technology. To donate, click on the link below:

Sheldon High School students receive 2014 Research Scholar Awards

Five Sheldon High School students have been selected to receive 2014 Research Scholar Awards. These students will be spending the summer participating in a research internship in stem cell biology at the University of California, Davis, funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). The following Sheldon students received 2014 Research Scholar Awards:

  • Chetanjot Bahatti
  • Tim Derebenskiy
  • Insu Jung
  • Rushall Manhas
  • David (Duc) Nguyen)

The Stem Cell Program at UC Davis selects 10 high school students from Northern California to carry out cutting edge research at UC Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) during the summer. The students are enrolled in a graduate-level course on advanced lab procedures and stem cell culture. In addition, each student is assigned to work in a different stem cell lab at UCDMC and carry out a long-term research experiment.

At the end of the summer, students will share their results in San Francisco at an annual poster symposium. The students will receive between $2,500 and $4,000 in addition to the one-of-a-kind research and publication experience. Sheldon students received more awards than any other high school in the region. The 2014 Research Scholars were also participants in the 2014 Teen Biotech Challenge.

Laguna Creek High School GETA program to compete in solar boat race in Monaco

School may be out for the summer at Elk Grove Unified School District high schools, but students in the Green Energy Technology Academy (GETA) at Laguna Creek High School (LCHS) still have a reason to come to school. From July 10-July 12, GETA students will be racing their award-winning solar boat in the Solar1 Monte Carlo Cup in Monaco.

The road to the Monte Carlo Cup has been paved with numerous awards, all the result of hard work and innovation on the part of the GETA students and their dedicated teachers. In May 2014, GETA students won both the high school and college level competitions in the sprint, slalom and endurance races of the Northern California Solar Regatta. Members of the senior and junior teams will make up an eight-member team to race their boat in the Monte Carlo Cup. Click here for more information about the Solar1 Monte Carlo Cup.

The GETA program at LCHS is focused on the technology of renewable energy. GETA students explore the concepts of energy extraction, conversion and transmission processes through complex, hands-on, project-based work. Depending on their post-secondary plans, students who graduate from GETA will be prepared to enter two or four-year institutions of study, enter a technical training program or directly enter the workforce in the energy sector. Click here for more information about GETA at LCHS.

GETA is also looking for sponsors to help send the students to Monaco. For more information about donating, contact Eric Johnson at ejjohnso@egusd.net or (916) 230-7624.

EGUSD posts proposed 2014-2017 Local Control Accountability Plan and Budget

The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) has posted its proposed 2014-2017 Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and Budget. This LCAP and Budget will be presented to the EGUSD Board of Education at their June 17 Board Meeting. At that time, the Board will hold a public hearing on both the LCAP and the budget. On July 1, 2014, the Board will be asked to adopt both the final LCAP and Budget.

Over the past year, the Elk Grove Unified School District has gathered public input to build the LCAP and budget. The State mandates that both the LCAP and budget be a three year plan that is updated each year. The plan includes a description of annual goals for all students as well as for the following student subgroups: English language learners, foster youth and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Furthermore, the plan includes a description of the specific action that the District will take to achieve these goals. Funding delineated for these actions are called out in the LCAP and included in EGUSD's budget.

EGUSD works with community partners to provide free meals to children this summer

Summer is coming soon and for many families who receive free or reduced priced meals, summer can mean hunger. Just as learning does not end when school is out, neither does a child's need for good nutrition.

This summer, Elk Grove Unified Food & Nutrition Services is working with local community partners to provide meals, free of charge, to children under the age of 18. The Seamless Summer Feeding Program, which is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), allows school districts to provide meals in neighborhoods with greater than 50 percent free or reduced eligible populations. Meals are served to children free of charge and there are no income requirements for those that participate.

Elk Grove Unified Food & Nutrition Services will be working with the City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation as well as Southgate Parks and Recreation to provide free meals at parks in South Sacramento and North Elk Grove communities. Elk Grove Food & Nutrition will also provide meals at two Sacramento Public Library locations, Southgate and Valley Hi-North Laguna.
