EGUSD looking for volunteers to assist with Elk Grove Optimist/Kohl's ChildSpree

Volunteers, sponsors and chaperones are still needed for the annual Elk Grove Optimist/Kohl's ChildSpree event that will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

More than 100 Elk Grove Unified students will enjoy a $125 back-to-school shopping spree on Saturday, July 26 to shop for back to school clothing at the Elk Grove Kohl's store. Childspree is an event for select students who are in need of school clothes, backpacks and school supplies. The students range from kindergarten through 5th grade.

Students will shop with chaperones at the Kohl's store located at 9650 Bruceville Road. Kohl's will provide each student with a 15 percent discount. Students participating in the event are identified through Healthy Start, Project Act and Foster Youth Services.

The day includes a pancake breakfast in the parking lot, prepared and served by Elk Grove Lions Club and their members. Vision To Learn will provide their vision van, free eye exams and glasses for students at the rear of the store. Great Clips will offer free haircuts in the staff room for the students. Each student will receive a backpack filled with school supplies, compliments of Soroptimist International of Elk Grove and Paula Maita. Safe Kids Greater Sacramento will provide free booster seats and smoke detector batteries to families participating in this event. In addition, the University of California, Davis will provide free bicycle helmets to the students and Elk Grove Unified Healthy Start Program will provide oral dental supplies.

"The Child Spree is a collaborative event where many community members come together to address the needs of children in our District," said Sandy Waite, a nurse and Healthy Start Coordinator for the District. "Children come up to me years later and tell me they remember this event and how much it meant to them."

To sign up to volunteer at this event, contact Sandy Waite in Healthy Start at 392-9081.

Elk Grove Unified School District and Sacramento City Unified School District Funded for Unprecedented Partnership for 21st Century Learning

   students

The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) and the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) have been awarded up to $6 million in funding for a new unprecedented Career Technical Education (CTE) Capital Academies and Pathways (CAP) partnership to prepare Sacramento and Elk Grove students for college and careers in today's high-demand fields.

EGUSD and SCUSD will use the funds to build a regional infrastructure of high-demand career pathway programs that meets Sacramento's economic needs and fully prepares young adults for postsecondary education and work.  CAP, which includes career pathway programs in the EGUSD and SCUSD, will be enriched by the breadth and depth of its collaborative partnerships and an extensive level of support by regional businesses, institutions of higher education and community leaders. A regional infrastructure of employer engagement that transcends individual schools, programs, school districts, colleges and universities will support three major elements of CAP:  1) intensive professional development for career pathway educators; 2) strong articulation with postsecondary institutions; and 3) an array of industry-aligned work-based learning opportunities for students.

The Sacramento Employment Training Agency (SETA) is the third major partner in CAP. SETA will employ at least five career specialists who will work directly with academy and pathway students to develop their college and career readiness skills.

EGUSD, SCUSD and SETA will work in partnership with the Capitol Region Academies for the Next Economy (CRANE) consortium led by the Sacramento County Office of Education.  This consortium received a California Career Pathways Trust grant for up to $15 million. CRANE includes the Placer County Office of Education, El Dorado Union High School District (on behalf of the El Dorado County Office of Education), over 22 other school districts and the education non-profit NextEd.

EGUSD high school students participate in Math Steeplechase competition

In the Olympics, athletes tackling the steeplechase event must demonstrate amazing athletic endurance while running over and through obstacles to be victorious.

Although school is already out for the summer, on Wednesday, June 4, high school math students in the Elk Grove Unified School District displayed endurance of another kind - mathematical prowess - when they competed in the District's annual Math Steeplechase event. This year's Math Steeplechase was held in Elk Grove Regional Park.

"Sometimes, the problems required multiple students to participate directly in developing a solution," said Brad Schottle, a math teacher from Cosumnes Oaks High School. "The topics covered in the competition include logic, geometry, probability, ratios and proportions and functions."

A total of nine teams competed in the Math Steeplechase this year.  Pleasant Grove High School's B team took home first place honors, Franklin High School's B team placed second and Sheldon High School came in third.

Since the mid-1990's, students from high schools throughout the District have competed at this event. During the competition, students had to complete eight math problems - one per station - where a group of five students were given 15 minutes to arrive at an answer. At the end of the allotted time period, the students gave their answers to the proctor. The student groups then rotated to the next station.

EGUSD, Elk Grove Citizen & Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation shine at "Spotlight on Scholars"

graduates

Students constantly hear how important education is from the adults in their lives - family members, teachers and mentors, just to name a few. But what about hearing this important message from their peers?

For the second year in a row, the Elk Grove Unified School District has partnered with the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation (EGRSF) and the Elk Grove Citizen to present "Spotlight on Scholars," a program that features teens telling their academic success stories to their peers. The goal of the program is to inspire other young people as well as share helpful tips about the road to college and careers.

Each month, the Elk Grove Citizen will run an article featuring one of ten EGRSF scholarship recipients talking to students about their path to success. The ten students were nominated by their school counselors for their exceptional success stories and represent a variety of backgrounds.

The Elk Grove Citizen articles are the first step in the Spotlight on Scholars program. In the future, EGUSD, the Elk Grove Citizen and EGRSF hope to continue to promote this peer program through videos, social networks and student speakers.
