Volunteers, sponsors and chaperones are still needed for the annual Elk Grove Optimist/Kohl's ChildSpree event that will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

More than 100 Elk Grove Unified students will enjoy a $125 back-to-school shopping spree on Saturday, July 26 to shop for back to school clothing at the Elk Grove Kohl's store. Childspree is an event for select students who are in need of school clothes, backpacks and school supplies. The students range from kindergarten through 5th grade.

Students will shop with chaperones at the Kohl's store located at 9650 Bruceville Road. Kohl's will provide each student with a 15 percent discount. Students participating in the event are identified through Healthy Start, Project Act and Foster Youth Services.

The day includes a pancake breakfast in the parking lot, prepared and served by Elk Grove Lions Club and their members. Vision To Learn will provide their vision van, free eye exams and glasses for students at the rear of the store. Great Clips will offer free haircuts in the staff room for the students. Each student will receive a backpack filled with school supplies, compliments of Soroptimist International of Elk Grove and Paula Maita. Safe Kids Greater Sacramento will provide free booster seats and fire alarm batteries to families participating in this event. In addition, the University of California, Davis will provide free bicycle helmets to the students and Elk Grove Unified Healthy Start Program will provide oral dental supplies.

"The Child Spree is a collaborative event where many community members come together to address the needs of children in our District," said Sandy Waite, a nurse and Healthy Start Coordinator for the District. "Children come up to me years later and tell me they remember this event and how much it meant to them."

To sign up to volunteer at this event, contact Sandy Waite in Healthy Start at 392-9081.

Valley High School Health TECH Academy provides health screenings at Franchise Tax Board

The sophomores in Valley High School's Health TECH Academy are taking what they've learned out of the classroom and applying it to real life situations.

On May 14, the Health TECH Academy sophomore had a chance
to use what they've learned to participate in a hands-on experience by providing hundreds of free screenings to the employees of the Franchise Tax Board (FTB), as well as managing stations in the main FTB health fair area. The sophomore students had recently completed the "hands-on health" unit and were able to practice the skills at the FTB health fair.

Each sophomore student had the chance to practice blood pressure, BMI/body fat, temperature and vision, as well as communication skills at the event. The sophomores also had the opportunity to receive authentic assessment from their senior peers. The seniors assisted Valley teachers in providing instant feedback/correction on the sophomore in how they interacted with the public.

Valley's Health TECH Academy is designed for students interested in health-related careers. This academy is an innovative four-year program that combines advanced technology, student work place experience and direct contact with local health officials to create a unique educational experience for all students interested in any health-related occupation. Click here for more information about the Health TECH Academy.
