Students helping students at Harriet Eddy Middle School - with math
Students looking for a little more help with mathematics will soon have an additional resource to learn from at Harriet G. Eddy Middle School thanks to a new peer tutoring program just for math students.
The idea for having student math tutors at Harriet G. Eddy Middle School grew from the memories teachers Casey Behney and Matthew Halseth recalled from being math tutors themselves in college.
"We both remembered our experiences as tutors fondly and thought it would be a good idea to train our strong math students as math tutors," Halseth said. "I recruited students who were in my two 7th grade Algebra classes and asked Honors Pre-Algebra teachers for recommendations from their classes."
From their recruitment efforts, Halseth and Behney found 22 students willing to attend school during zero period - an hour before most students start school - and tutor other students having difficulties in math. The math tutors have undergone three weeks of extensive training to learn how to be effective tutors. The tutoring training included questioning strategies - such as the Socratic method, active listening skills, role playing, error analysis, the structure of a tutoring session, cultural awareness and tutor/tutee behavior expectations.
Once tutoring begins, the math tutors will provide one-on-one tutoring for their peers in math only. Peer tutors will receive full credits for the semester (2.5 per quarter), are graded credit/no credit and will receive community service hours for their tutoring work.
For students at Eddy looking for math tutoring help, they can sign up to meet with a peer tutor either twice a week - on Mondays and Thursdays or Tuesdays and Fridays - or during drop-in tutoring on Wednesdays. Tutees will also earn credits (1 credit per quarter) for attending tutoring sessions.
"We're definitely excited about the peer tutoring program at Eddy," Halseth said. "We think it is going to be a valuable resource for our Eddy math students."

Newsletters get the video treatment at David Reese Elementary School
School newsletters. They provide vital information about a school for parents, students and the community. They are commonly produced in two popular formats - printed on paper or posted online. That is...until now.
David Reese Elementary School has taken their school newsletter to a different level by introducing their video newsletter, spearheaded by 5th grade teacher Rudy Alfonso and Principal Jenifer Avey. The video newsletters were created as an alternate option for a monthly newsletter that might be better received and more viewed than a traditional newsletter.
"The main purpose of the video announcements is to let the parents and community know what's happening at our school," Alfonso said. "A secondary purpose is to allow our students to participate in communicating that information."
The video newsletters always include an introduction from Avey and Vice Principal Jack Ferreira. The newsletters also include important upcoming dates of events at Reese. On occasion, a special segment is included that focuses on a character trait being highlighted at school through Reese's character education program.
Reese students definitely enjoy participating in creating the video announcements.
"I like seeing the growth of the students as they get used to being on camera," Alfonso said. "They're nervous at first but as they grow in confidence, they learn to enjoy the experience and look forward to producing the video newsletters. Being able to share their work with their families across the country - and sometimes across the world - is also very exciting for them. You can definitely see them become more confident as the year progresses."
In the future, Alfonso would like to include video segments filmed by students in a news report format to capture special events happening at Reese.
Reese's latest video newsletter can be found at www.davidreeseschool.org.

"Foster" grandparents find a place at EGUSD elementary schools
Retired educator Hilda Curry doesn't have students at Joseph Sims Elementary but she can often be found on campus. She is one of many "foster" grandparents volunteering throughout the Sacramento community participating in the Foster Grandparent Program, sponsored by the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance.
Foster grandparents can choose to volunteer in a variety of different areas, including tutoring and mentoring children, holding and nurturing babies born prematurely with health problems, helping children with long-term illnesses and who are at risk from dropping out of school, just to name a few of the areas.
"We love having Hilda around," said Shelly Hughes, principal at Sims. "She's an invaluable part of our Sims family. The staff loves her, our students love her - we definitely appreciate the time she spend volunteering at our school."
The Foster Grandparent program is currently looking for more volunteers. Click here for more information about the Foster Grandparent Program or contact program coordinators Sondra Mattingly or Dennis Brodsky at (916) 875-3569.
