Common Core State Standards implemented at EGUSD
In the 2013-2014 school year, the Elk Grove Unified School District will fully implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) at all grade levels. These national academic standards, adopted by the State of California, reflect the most significant change in public education in over two decades. It is an exciting shift. In addition to being aligned at a national level, the CCSS are focused on preparing students to have the skills and knowledge that will enable them to compete in a 21st century global marketplace.
The CCSS standards stem from a nationwide initiative to set a clear and consistent progression of learning across all states. In 2010, the California State Board of Education adopted these standards with some additions unique to California. These kindergarten through 12th grade standards provide a progression of knowledge and skills that prepare students to graduate from high school and be ready for college and careers. The standards are research-based and internationally benchmarked.
These new academic content standards address English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics, with ELA standards including literacy standards for science and history/social sciences. Standards define the concepts and skills that every child learns. Over the past year, EGUSD teachers have been preparing to teach these new standards to your students.
EGUSD's implementation of the CCSS began this school year at elementary schools with mathematics in grades K-2 and ELA in grades 3-6. In 2013-2014, elementary schools will add ELA in grades K-2 and mathematics in grades 3-6. At the middle and high schools, in 2013-2014, the CCSS mathematics and ELA standards (including literacy standards for science and history/social sciences) will be taught at all grade levels.

EGUSD selected for statewide Common Core State Standards grant
The Elk Grove Unified School District has been selected as a recipient of a Math in Common grant from the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation to support EGUSD's faithful implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Mathematics for K-8 students.
New math standards will transform the way children learn mathematics, tapping into children's natural curiosity to make math more engaging, relevant and rigorous. The standards call on students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges, thus preparing them for the 21st century economy.
Elk Grove Unified's plan for standards implementation includes:
- The purchase of curricular materials that support CCSS math in grades K-6.
- Students in grades K-2 have begun to use these materials this school year. Students and teachers in grades 3-6 will begin using the new materials when school starts in the summer of 2013.
- S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation funding will provide some 220 elementary and middle school math teachers training to become leaders of colleagues in structures known as professional learning communities (PLCs). This funding will also provide substantial training for all of our K-8 math teachers.
- EGUSD partners in the grant, the Math and Science Education Center at CSUS and the Sacramento County of Education, will assist EGUSD teachers in deepening their understanding of mathematics and instructional strategies to support student learning in math.
"This grant provides support to our efforts to build instructional capacity not only in our district, but also allows us to share our best practices with other school districts," said Elk Grove Unified Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D.
Elk Grove Unified will join nine other committed and capable California school districts as Math in Common grantees: Dinuba, Garden Grove, Long Beach, Oakland, Oceanside, Sacramento City, San Francisco, Sanger and Santa Ana. In addition to focusing on their individual plans, these districts will participate in a community of practice to share the challenges and successes they encounter in implementing the standards. Lessons learned from these districts will be made available for all districts in California.

Sheldon High School receives $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant
Sheldon High School's K9 Studios has been selected as the recipient of a $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Art Works grant. Sheldon's K9 Studios was one of 817 non-profit organizations nationwide selected to receive this grant.
K9 Studios will use the grant to produce a three to five minute animated short film with direct instruction from and participation with professional animators and artists throughout the entertainment industry. The film will be created by 45 Sheldon animation students under the direction of Shawn Sullivan, animation teacher at Sheldon and coordinator of the animation project. To gain maximum exposure for the project, the students are proposing to screen the film at movie theaters in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.
"Being selected for the NEA Art Works grant is a huge honor and opportunity for the animation students here at Sheldon," said Sullivan. "For high school students, the ability to intern and learn from professionals from Disney Pixar, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon is the chance of a lifetime. The philosophy of my class is to provide real world learning opportunities. In the area of animation education, it does not get bigger than this."
Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts and the strengthening of communities through the arts. The 817 NEA Art Works grants totals $26.3 million and spans 13 artistic disciplines and fields. Grant applications were reviewed by panels of outside experts convened by NEA staff and each project was judged on its artistic excellence and artistic merit.
