Internet Safety Tips
TIP: Be a good cyber citizen! Remind kids that an Internet playground is still a playground and they need to play nicely. A good rule of thumb: If they wouldn't do something in real life, they shouldn't do it online. Find out how your children can report mean behavior or unkind content on their favorite sites and teach them how to do it.

Former San Francisco Giants player visits Foulks Ranch Elementary
School class
It's not every day a former Major League Baseball player visits your classroom. But that is exactly what happened to the lucky students in Kristi Maddock's 6thgrade class at Foulks Ranch Elementary School on March 8.
Don Carrithers, former San Francisco Giants player and current Elk Grove resident, visited Maddock's class to discuss perseverance, goal-setting and being true to who you are. Carrithers spent time telling students of the goals he set for himself when he was a 6th grade student and how he succeeded in the major leagues despite all the hardships he faced throughout his time getting there.
Carrithers stressed to the students that they can be successful if they know what they want to accomplish and stay true to themselves. After his presentation, he took the time to sign rally towels, baseballs, cards and share funny stories about Hall of Famers he played with.

EGUSD school namesakes recognized at luncheon
On March 7, eight school namesakes - Arnold Adreani, Katherine L. Albiani, Edward Harris, Jr., Arlene Hein, Toby Johnson, Elizabeth Pinkerton, Robert Trigg, and Irene B. West - attended a luncheon in their honor at the Cosumnes Oaks High School Culinary Arts Center. The luncheon was hosted by EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D.
At Elk Grove Unified, elementary and middle schools and the district office are named after persons who made contributions to education. One of the special things about EGUSD is that many of our students have the benefit of interacting with some of EGUSD's school namesakes who are still actively involved in the community.
The idea for the luncheon grew out of a conversation between Ladd and Albiani where she suggested the idea of the school namesakes getting together.
"It was an honor to help bring this distinguished group of people together," Ladd said. "Their contributions to our school district and community are immense."
In 1959, the residents of 320 square miles in South Sacramento County voted to become a unified school district. There were 3,800 K-12 students in the new Elk Grove Unified School District that included nine elementary schools and one high school. Rapid growth resulted in the need to build more schools, and it soon became evident that a naming process would be needed. A group of citizens volunteered to assist and a formal process for naming schools was begun in 1965.

#UnfollowBullying students recognized at board meeting
Sometimes, all it takes is a # (hashtag) to start a movement.
Student representatives who served on the Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years were recognized for their work on the #UnfollowBullying campaign at the March 5 Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education meeting.
Prior to recognizing the students for their efforts, Director of Communications Elizabeth Graswich, Web Specialist Kathleen Watt and Technology Integration Specialist Gail Desler, were joined by students Eric Dean (Florin High School), Maxwell Fong (Franklin High School) and Jose Sanabria (Valley High School) in giving an overview presentation to the Board about the #UnfollowBullying campaign.
The #UnfollowBullying campaign, launched on November 5, 2012, is a student-led campaign focused on taking a stand against cyberbullying
by modeling positive and ethical use of social media sites, such as Twitter and Instagram. The idea for the campaign came from EGUSD's Digital Citizenship Task Force. Members of the task force felt that the most effective way to reach students on the topic of cyberbullying was through their peers. Students on the Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee took on the task of creating the campaign, with the guidance of Graswich, Watt, Desler and EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D.
The #UnfollowBullying campaign began with a week of activities and promotions at middle and high school sites throughout the district. Students held pledge drives, created #UnfollowBullying walls, created educational videos and wore #UnfollowBullying wrist bands to show their commitment against cyberbullying.

Elementary school students learn about fitness and nutrition through F.A.N. Club
Students at two Elk Grove Unified elementary schools are learning about the significance of health, fitness and character - all through a new program called the F.A.N. (Fitness And Nutrition) Club.
The F.A.N. Club, currently at Charles Mack and John Reith elementary schools, was established in collaboration with Black Belt in Fitness and the Heal Zone to bring more awareness to the importance of health and fitness by education school communities.
"The purpose of the F.A.N. Club is to get kids moving," said Ron Robinson, coordinator of the club at both schools and the owner of Black Belt in Fitness. "Kids are led through fitness workshops that demonstrate the importance of a healthy lifestyle while having fun. The parents are also involved. They participate in a series of workshops that are centered around training them to become their student's advocates both at home and at school."
The student component includes a cohort of 4th grade students that meet each week. A pilot program is also being developed with the 4th grade students to assist in developing their fitness levels in preparation for the 5th grade Fitness Gram Pacer Test. The parent component focuses on training parents to form a school site leadership group that creates programs and support for maintaining a focus on health and fitness at the school site.
Robinson has big plans for the future of the program.
"I'd like to see the F.A.N. Club continue to grow and develop regional partnerships with schools in order to create a regional parent advocacy team that will lead the way for implementing and sustaining fitness and health programs throughout their community in the Elk Grove Unified School District," Robinson said.
