What's New at Guardian Nurses
Los Angeles Rolls Out the Red Carpet!!
Many of our Facebook fans and readers of The Flame know that October 11th was the world premiere of "Nurses: If Florence Could See Us Now," the full length documentary celebrating the diverse roles of nurses in the United States.
And what better venue for a world premiere than Los Angeles! More than 1300 guests watched the 90 minute film. And as the credits rolled, the audience applauded and gave the film a standing ovation.
Betty Long, RN, president of Guardian Nurses, assumed her role as nursing pioneer, Florence Nightingale, during the premiere and emceed the Q&A following the film (photo below).
Plans are in the works to bring the film to theaters and cities across the US. Stay updated on the film's whereabouts by 'liking' it on Facebook or check in on the Guardian Nurses website.

A Thank You
"Several months ago, my two children were dropped from our insurance coverage when my husband forgot to send the form back in.
A nurse advocate was able to handle our case and get my children reinstated! I'll never forget how quickly and kindly I was treated. Thank you!"

As is often the case when you work directly with patients, sometimes the diagnoses come very close to home.
Within the last month, two close friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Their journey, like the journey of thousands of women each year, has been riddled with disbelief, fear, frustration, uncertainty, and action.
Know that with more than 200,000 new breast cancer diagnoses every year, it may come close to home for you, too. And so, as we commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, please take a few minutes to educate and empower yourself on the seven warning signs of breast cancer. Or forward this edition of The Flame on to someone you love.

Happy Halloween!

Thanks to breast cancer awareness groups, there are plenty of on-line resources for women investigating breast cancer diagnoses and treatments. Two of our favorite websites are The National Cancer Institute (which also offers information in Spanish) and the
So, amidst all the tons of information being offered this month, and all year, we just wanted to 'keep it simple' and list the warning signs of breast cancer. Because when it all comes down to it, patients need to know their bodies and report any changes in their breast appearance as soon as possible. And if you feel like your healthcare provider isn't addressing your concerns as actively as you'd like, please speak up! EARLY WARNING SIGNS: Breast cancer may cause any of the following signs and symptoms. Meet with your healthcare provider and let him/her know if you have ANY of the following problems: - A lump or thickening in or near your breast or in your underarm area.
- A change in the size or shape of your breast.
- A dimple or puckering in the skin of your breast.
- A nipple turned inward into your breast.
- Fluid, other than breast milk, from your nipple, especially if it's bloody.
- Scaly, red, or swollen skin on your breast, nipple, or areola (the dark area of skin that is around your nipple).
- Dimples in your breast that look like the skin of an orange, called peau d'orange.
Though much has been accomplished in the detection and treatment of breast cancer, much still needs to be done. But the first step starts with YOU.
