January Update from
The Center

Happy New Year 2015!

We know that many studies now show that participation in the arts is good for us - making it or seeing it! The arts build community, raise children's test scores, help children and adults with special needs, develop skills, encourage us to think outside of the box, help us to solve problems creatively, and serve as economic engines. But plain and simple, art just makes us feel good.

So often our New Year's resolution are lists of things that we should do because they are good for us. In 2015 how about making a commitment to doing something for yourself that just makes you feel good?

Sue Ferguson Gussow
Line, Color and Surface

"Line, Color and Surface" is the first exhibit of the New Year at The Center for Contemporary Art. It opens on Friday, January 9th and remains on view through February 21, 2015. The public is invited to an opening reception for the exhibit and artist talk on Friday, January 9th from 6-8 p.m.

The exhibit is curated by well-known New Jersey painter, and great friend of The Center, Mel Leipzig, and features the work of four artists: Harry Naar (Lawrenceville, NJ), Sue Ferguson Gussow (New York, NY), Geoffrey Dorfman (Trenton, NJ) and Tracey Jones (Trenton, NJ).

According to Leipzig, "At first glance it might seem that the grouping of these four artists, two concerned with drawing from nature and two abstract painters, is disparate. On closer inspection it can be noted that all four artists, no matter what medium they use, be it the oil paints of Geoff Dorfman and Tracey Jones, the charcoal and pastel drawings of Sue Ferguson Gussow or the ink drawings of Harry Naar, exhibit a deep appreciation of the textual richness and sensuous qualities of their chosen medium."

Oscar Peterson
Free Artist Demo

In last year's Member survey many of you asked for more artists demonstrations and we heard you! The Center will offer several demos in 2015 beginning with portrait artist and CCA instructor Oscar Peterson who will demonstrate the methods he teaches in his portrait drawing class.

An alumnus of Pratt Institute and The Art Students League of NY, Oscar studied with leading realist painters Max Ginsberg and Nelson Shanks and teaches at The Art Students League in New York City.

Artist demos are free for current members and $10 for non-members. Pre-registration is required as space is limited.
