March Update from
The Center

Greetings!

Clearly March is coming in like a lion this year, but we are fighting back the persistent chill of winter by filling The Center's galleries with two exhibits of bright and colorful children's art. Youth Art Month always marks the welcome end of winter!

Summer Art Camps & Adult Classes & Workshops

Weekly summer art camps at The Center are designed to stimulate creative expression through theme-based art projects and activities that change each week. The Center also offers the area's only week-long summer art camps in ceramics in a new state-of-the-art studio. Teen Summer "intensives" allow artists 13 years old and above at all levels of expertise to develop or fine tune skills through an in-depth exploration of a single medium or genre.

Adult afternoon and evening classes are also offered this summer in ceramics, oils, acrylics and watercolors, photography and drawing. Saturday workshops explore  rawing, collage, animal portraits, watercolor, silverpoint, ceramics, palette knife and portraiture.

Youth Art Month

For the past thirteen years, in celebration of Youth Art Month, The Center for Contemporary Art has hosted exhibitions of Somerset County student work in partnership with Art Educators of New Jersey.

Each year, each state submits a Youth Art Month report to NAEA and awards of excellence are given to four states.

New Jersey has received one of the top four Youth Art Month Awards from the Council for Art Education for the past 20 years and has received the Claire Flanagan Memorial Grand Award or an Award of Excellence for the past six. These awards are based on overall state participation by all twenty-one counties.

This year thirty-four Somerset County schools will be participating in two exhibitions during the month of March. Six works of art from Somerset County have been selected for a State-wide exhibition which takes place at the Statehouse in Trenton where over 100 pieces of student work are displayed from every county in the State.

See the event calendar for exhibit dates for each age group.

Think spring!

We will be celebrating the arrival of spring at The Center on Saturday, May 10th with "Hooray for May! A Family Art Day."

Please join us for a special art day just for families, and it's FREE! Make community works of art with artist Dan Fenelon, and make your own beautiful projects, for Mother's Day or just for fun. Refreshments and lots more too!

Many volunteers are needed! Join the committee or sign up to help on the day of the event. Contact Danielle Wolfrum
if you would like to get involved.

I hope you will not wait for "Hooray for May!" to celebrate the arrival of spring with us. Stop by to enjoy the children's art in our galleries this month, and consider signing up for a spring class or workshop.
