Zero Robotics: Racing Robots in Space

East End House's Middle School Program has been selected to be part of NASA's Zero Robotics program, which teaches youth to program satellite robots that will ultimately be raced on the International Space Station. Hear what one student has to say:

"Last year I participated in the robotics program and I thought that it helped stimulate my brain while I was out of school. At first it seemed as though it would be impossible to do, but day by day I found that it became easier...it was a fun way to keep my brain working during the summer and be ready for school. The Robotics Program also helped me think about what I might do for a job when I get older." Read more »

The Importance of Thank You

East End House is a Partner in Mass Mentoring's quality-based membership program, and the organization has hosted several Highland Street Corps Ambassadors of Mentoring in recent years. This year's Corps member Nikki Leon recently wrote this post for the Highland Street Corps blog about the importance of thanking volunteers:

I'm grateful to the East End House mentors. They teach our middle school youth how to manage difficult emotions, how to develop focus in class, and how to have fun on rainy days when you're stuck inside a community center without any video games. We've had mentors who inspire our kids to create hilarious dramatic skits about professional basketball and mentors who coach mentees through their first game of Settlers of Catan. Read more »

Did You Miss the STEM Pipeline Roundtable?

Whether you weren't able to make it to East End House's roundtable discussion or you want to relive what you learned, our notes will help you understand the challenges and possibilities of addressing the STEM education pipeline. Click here to read what our expert panelists shared about how to excite minority, female and low-income students in scientific inquiry that will inspire lifelong careers. The notes are brief and reader-friendly.

This discussion, held on April 18, 2013, was part of the Cambridge Science Festival and was supported by the Biogen Idec Community Lab, Cambridge Agenda for Children, Education Development Center, Massachusetts Afterschool Partnership and Program in Education, Afterschool and Resiliency, an affiliate of McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

A Year of Volunteering

From Martin Luther King Day to the Holiday Toy Drive and everything in between, East End House benefits from the generous service of volunteers. We encourage volunteers to return regularly in order to build new skills and develop relationships. In this situation, East End House will pair you with an opportunity that closely suits your interests and schedule. However, many people find that a one-time volunteer project fits better with their lifestyle. Click here to learn more about the many events during the year that need your support!
