National Volunteer Week: Thank You to all our Amazing Volunteers!

April 21-27, 2013 is National Volunteer Week, and East End House would like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers who make such a tremendous difference to our organization! In the last year, more than 500 volunteers have provided East End House with over 5,000 hours of service! Volunteering at East End House takes many forms: tutoring children, mentoring youth, distributing food in the food pantry, or supporting our events like Cooking for a Cause. We're always looking for more helping hands. Just contact Tim Severyn at 617-876-4444 or timothy@eastendhouse.org. One great way to get started is to come to our Community Clean Up Day this Saturday from 9:30am-2pm!

Tenth Annual Cooking for a Cause Gathers Hundreds

Thank you to all our contributors who made the 10th Anniversary of Cooking for a Cause a resounding success. The MIT Media Lab provided a beautiful new venue as over 600 guests enjoyed delicious food and drink from the best chefs, bartenders and vendors in the area. Live and silent auctions supported the vital programming at East End House, and Biogen Idec and the Biogen Idec Foundation received the Outstanding Community Partner Award in recognition of many years of exemplary leadership in sparking positive change in the lives of countless children, families and individuals. Science Festival Highlights STEM at East End House

From April 12 to April 21, Cambridge gathered for the annual Cambridge Science Festival, a celebration and showcase of the many exciting scientific resources in our community. As a community center at the cutting edge of infusing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning into youth out of school time programming, East End House was well represented. Youth programs displayed STEM at the Science Carnival and a roundtable discussion addressed ways to encourage minority, low-income and female students in STEM. Register Now for Spring and Summer Programming

There are a lot of exciting programs coming up for children and youth. East End House has expanded the School Age Program to a new location at the Kennedy-Longfellow Elementary School. The program, which is a collaboration with the school, is open to all preK-2nd grade children enrolled at K-Lo. We are currently enrolling for this program, and it is also time to make plans for the summer. Summer Fun (for kindergarten-fifth graders) and YO! Summer (for rising 6th-8th graders) are now registering for full-day programming that includes swimming, sports, games, field trips, and engaging, hands-on projects to keep academic skills sharp all summer long. The Boston Globe Features East End House

In case you missed it, on Wednesday, April 3, The Boston Globe published a piece about the Catalyst Project, East End House’s partnership with Chef William Kovel of Catalyst Restaurant to teach farm-to-table cooking to school age youth. The article describes how the project is changing the way children are looking at—and cooking—food every day. It also highlights Chef Kovel’s role as Culinary Chair in Cooking for a Cause. Check out the article here.

Building Healthy Habits

East End House's Child Care Program provides children 12 months to 5 years with a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack every day, for a total of 25,854 meals each year (not including snacks). Meals are prepared by East End House's Food Specialist, who is dedicated to shaping healthy habits and exposing children to nutritious food at an early age. While initially many children are skeptical of new vegetables, after some time in the program children eagerly look forward to meals prepared with kale, butternut squash, and more.

Our Mission

East End House community center uses a holistic approach to promote the well-being, academic achievement, and successful transition to adulthood of children and youth from under-resourced families in Cambridge and surrounding communities. As part of the approach, East End House provides support services to a diverse population, from infants to seniors, to strengthen family and community.
