Mid Feb 2015

Almost everyday there is an article somewhere on parents battling school boards to save school recess.

It may be due to the overwhelming amount of research on the importance of recess and P.E. and their impact on academic learning.

A national survey shows that 99% of adults favor elementary school recess.  So why does this battle continue?

Busing schedules, teacher break time, unsafe playgrounds, and the usual refrain of "we have PE, they don't need recess" are some of the arguments for eliminating recess.  However, a quickly growing body of research indicates four indisputable facts:

1) Sacrificing physical education time for classroom time does not improve learning.

2) Kids who are more physically active tend to perform better academically.

3) Kids who are physically fit are likely to demonstrate a stronger  academic performance.

4) Activity breaks can improve cognitive performance and classroom behavior.
