WHAT IS A DAY PROGRAM?

Day Programs are designed for individuals who want or need more intensive therapy than is available through regular outpatient counseling.  Participating in a Day Program may be helpful if you're not progressing satisfactorily with outpatient counseling, when you need to move through issues more quickly during an immediate crisis, or as a step-down after hospital or residential care.

Group counseling

A Meier Clinics Day Program is unique from many day programs as it is based on Christian principles and provides a full day of counseling care. We integrate spiritual, emotional and relational therapies to address the whole person.   Each client receives personalized and individual therapy with a counselor in a safe environment.  Group counseling is a powerful and key component of the Day Program as it helps individuals develop healthy boundaries, learn effective communication and interrelationship skills, share feelings and learn from other clients, and put into practice tools and skills they are learning throughout the day.

Meier Clinics has Day Programs in major metropolitan areas:  Chicago, Dallas & Seattle.  If you or someone you know would like to learn more about this effective treatment program, please call us at 888-7CLINIC (725-4642).

Mood Swings:
Are They Spiritual, Emotional, or Genetic?

by Paul Meier, M.D.

The correct answer to the above question is "all of the above," but sometimes our mood swings are mostly one or the other.  Clear as mud?  Well, let me explain.

The majority of depressive mood swings are due to a combination of spiritual and emotional (not genetic) factors.  For example, a tragedy occurs in someone's life, as it will sooner or later in all of our lives.  That personal tragedy triggers memories of previous childhood losses (a psychological phenomenon).  Then the person chooses to get bitter about the tragedy which causes it to become a spiritual problem.  Enough bitterness will result in a depletion of serotonin in the brain (a biochemical problem caused by the psychological and spiritual problem).  That person then develops a major depression as a result of the low serotonin levels in the brain, with fatigue, insomnia, poor concentration, increased irritability, painful thoughts and perhaps even death wishes.  This is the scenario most of the time.

Desires of the Heart

By Christina Browning, LCSW

Isn't it amazing how much our perception of reality affects our interaction with reality? I recently found that my perception of my happiness is often wrapped up in my expectations of what I need to feel, things I want to have, or my success as a person. Some days it is enough just to have sunshine, fresh air, and a good cup of coffee - and I am happy. Other days it doesn't matter how bright the sun, or what the coffee tastes like - I am not happy!

The 12 Steps in Christian Counseling:
Steps 9- 12

We have examined how relevant Christianity is in the first eight steps of the 12-step program. The following is an analysis of the next four steps:

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

God Himself has set the example for forgiveness, in that He is willing to forgive our many transgressions. We must ask the same of those in our lives and be willing to also forgive them.

The Role of Service in Recovery

By Chris Christensen, M.S.

As we see by the success of Alcoholics Anonymous over the last 78 years, helping others is a vital part of the recovery process.  The weekly meetings and the role of the sponsor all play an important part in helping someone in recovery.  I have also noticed, over the years at Turn-About Ranch, service plays a vital role for teens to be able to make the changes in their life necessary to become a healthy, productive member of society.  As the parable in Matthew states, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Matthew 25:40)  When we seek to help others, our problems become smaller and we are able to forget ourselves and look to the greater good.

The Addicted Family System:
How Do We Change It?

By Shannon Malish, L.M.S.W.

The addicted family system has become more common than not. Murray Bowen developed the most complete theory on family systems. After World War II, many of the veterans needed mental health treatment and went home to their families. Many therapists were puzzled about their lack of progress once treated and many regressed after returning to their environment. So began the examination of the home environment and its impact on the patient.
