Let Yourself Be Seen

by JoAnne V. Crough, LPC

Have you ever noticed how occasionally something will happen in your life that puts you right back in a moment you experienced years ago? It is a common phenomenon to have our past impact our present. This is a good thing when we can draw from past experience that has been largely stable and secure.

However, Scripture tells us that there will be trouble here on planet Earth. We are living in a fallen world; bad things certainly do happen to good people.   We often don't have logical reasons for why they happen, but some common ones occur when parents or caregivers fail to create a stable environment for children. Abuse, physical illness, addictions, mental illness, serious financial difficulties or living in unsafe environments such as where chronic bullying occurs affect many. So, when we don't have a secure past to fall back on, what happens when our wounds tether us to our past and what can we do about it?

Trust:  What Is It?

Sometimes things are very different than they first appear. I remember an incident that took place years ago while trying to sleep at a retreat. In the darkness, I saw something that appeared to be a wild animal - maybe a raccoon on the back of a couch. I didn't want to meet up with it whatever it was, so I stayed in bed. When I got up the next morning, I remember thinking to myself, "Oh, that's what it is." It was someone's jacket bunched up on the top of the furniture. Wow, did I get that one wrong!

What Christians Need to Know About Eating Disorders

Millions of women look into their mirrors every day and hate what they see.   They compare themselves to the air-brushed models in the magazines or the painstakingly thin celebrities and then they start dieting.

Dieting is often the first step to an eating disorder, which today afflicts roughly 10 million females and 1 million males in our country. More people die from anorexia each year than any other mental illness.
